An operationally defined carboxyl content of humic substances extracted from rivers, streams, lakes, wetlands, and groundwaters throughout the United States and Canada is reported. Despite the diversity of the samples, only small variations were observed in this humic carboxyl content. The dissociation behavior of two combined fulvic/humic acid extracts was studied and it was found that the dissociation of the humics varied in a predictable manner with pH. Using a carboxyl content of 10 μeq/ mg humic organic carbon, and mass action quotient calculated from sample pH, the ionic balances of three highly colored Nova Scotia rivers were estimated. 相似文献

This study represents the first large-scale systematic dendroclimatic sampling focused on developing chronologies from different
species in the eastern Mediterranean region. Six reconstructions were developed from chronologies ranging in length from 115 years
to 600 years. The first reconstruction (1885–2000) was derived from principal components (PCs) of 36 combined chronologies.
The remaining five, 1800–2000, 1700–2000, 1600–2000, 1500–2000 and 1400–2000 were developed from PCs of 32, 18, 14, 9, and
7 chronologies, respectively. Calibration and verification statistics for the period 1931–2000 show good levels of skill for
all reconstructions. The longest period of consecutive dry years, defined as those with less than 90% of the mean of the observed
May–August precipitation, was 5 years (1591–1595) and occurred only once during the last 600 years. The longest reconstructed
wet period was 5 years (1601–1605 and 1751–1755). No long term trends were found in May–August precipitation during the last
few centuries. Regression maps are used to identify the influence of large-scale atmospheric circulation on regional precipitation.
In general, tree-ring indices are influenced by May–August precipitation, which is driven by anomalous below (above) normal
pressure at all atmospheric levels and by convection (subsidence) and small pressure gradients at sea level. These atmospheric
conditions also control the anomaly surface air temperature distribution which indicates below (above) normal values in the
southern regions and warmer (cooler) conditions north of around 40°N. A compositing technique is used to extract information
on large-scale climate signals from extreme wet and dry summers for the second half of the twentieth century and an independent
reconstruction over the last 237 years. Similar main modes of atmospheric patterns and surface air temperature distribution
related to extreme dry and wet summers were identified both for the most recent 50 years and the last 237 years. Except for
the last few decades, running correlation analyses between the major European-scale circulation patterns and eastern Mediteranean
spring/summer precipitation over the last 237 years are non-stationary and insignificant, suggesting that local and/or sub-regional
geographic factors and processes are important influences on tree-ring variability over the last few centuries. 相似文献

A series of experiments and petrographic analyses have been run to determine the pre-eruption phase equilibria and ascent dynamics of dacitic lavas composing Black Butte, a dome complex on the flank of Mount Shasta, California. Major and trace element analyses indicate that the Black Butte magma shared a common parent with contemporaneously erupted magmas at the Shasta summit. The Black Butte lava phenocryst phase assemblage (20 v.%) consists of amphibole, plagioclase (core An77.5), and Fe–Ti oxides in a fine-grained (< 0.5 mm) groundmass of plagioclase, pyroxene, Fe–Ti oxides, amphibole, and cristobalite. The phenocryst assemblage and crystal compositions are reproduced experimentally between 890 °C and 910 °C, ≥ 300 MPa, XH2O = 1, and oxygen fugacity = NNO + 1. This study has quantified the extent of three crystallization processes occurring in the Black Butte dacite that can be used to discern ascent processes. Magma ascent rate was quantified using the widths of amphibole breakdown rims in natural samples, using an experimental calibration of rim development in a similar magma at relevant conditions. The majority of rims are 34 ± 10 μm thick, suggesting a time-integrated magma ascent rate of 0.004–0.006 m/s among all four dome lobes. This is comparable to values for effusive samples from the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption and slightly faster than those estimated at Montserrat. A gap between the compositions of plagioclase phenocryst cores and microlites suggests that while phenocryst growth was continuous throughout ascent, microlite formation did not occur until significantly into ascent. The duration of crystallization is estimated using the magma reservoir depth and ascent rate, as determined from phase equilibria and amphibole rim widths, respectively. Textural analysis of the natural plagioclase crystals yields maximum growth rates of plagioclase phenocryst rims and groundmass microlites of 8.7 × 10− 8 and 2.5 × 10− 8 mm/s, respectively. These rates are comparable to values determined from time-sequenced samples of dacite erupted effusively from Mount St. Helens during 1980 and indicate that syneruptive crystallization processes were important during the Black Butte eruptive cycle. 相似文献

Integration of Remote Sensing and GIS to Detect Pockets of Urban Poverty: The Case of Rosario, Argentina 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The advent of high spatial resolution, multispectral satellite imagery has allowed analysis of remotely sensed images of urban land cover to become more useful to urban planning and decision making than in the past. The addition of radar imagery at relatively high spatial resolution (6 metres at best), with the advantages that it is not affected by cloud and diurnal light conditions and that it is sensitive to the target's geometric shape, surface roughness and moisture content offers additional capability in this regard. This paper incorporates analysis of Canadian RADARSAT-1 and American Landsat TM satellite imagery and ground-based GIS data to identify known pockets of urban poverty. Poverty is defined, based on a limited number of census variables related to dwelling construction materials and per household overcrowding. The objective is to provide a proof of concept that remote sensing data, especially from synthetic aperture radar, and ground-based GIS data can be successfully integrated for urban planning purposes. The results suggest that the approach used is reasonable and that, with future refinement, it offers planners and decision makers a timely and cost effective means to locate and monitor poverty pockets in urban areas. One of the most popular petrogenetic concepts is that of simultaneous assimilation and fractional crystallisation (AFC).
The equations governing these processes are well known and widely applied. The power and attraction of the model are that,
with the minimum of constraints, petrogenetic schemes can be erected for essentially any group of rocks. These models are
usually based on the observed variations in a small number of trace elements and/or isotopic systems. In this paper we have
generated well-constrained AFC models for the Variscan, calc-alkaline Quérigut complex in the French Pyrénées. Our models
are based on geological constraints on the identities of the parent magma and candidate assimilants, and the Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr
isotope systematics of the rocks. The modelling is successful in mimicking the isotope array for the actual rocks. However,
the results are massively inconsistent with those produced using the major- and trace-element concentrations. Our major conclusion
is that AFC modelling should be undertaken only with robust initial constraints on the compositions of the parent magma and
the proposed assimilant, with due respect for crystal-liquid partition coefficients, in so far as they are known. The results
should then be accepted only if the isotope-based model parameters are consistent with those derived from major- and trace-element
variations.

Electron probe and wet chemical analyses of amphibole pairs from the sillimanite zone of central Massachusetts and adjacent New Hampshire indicated that for a particular metamorphic grade there should be a restricted composition range in which three amphiboles can coexist stably. An unequivocal example of such an equilibrium three amphibole rock has been found in the sillimanite-orthoclase zone. It contains a colorless primitive clinoamphibole, space group P21/m, optically and chemically like cummingtonite with blue-green hornblende exsolution lamellae on (100) and (¯101) of the host; blue-green hornblende, space group C2/m, with primitive cummingtonite exsolution lamellae on (100) and (¯101) of the host; and pale pinkish tan anthophyllite, space group Pnma, that is free of visible exsolution lamellae but is a submicroscopic intergrowth of two orthorhombic amphiboles. Mutual contacts and coarse, oriented intergrowths of two and three host amphiboles indicate the three grew as an equilibrium assemblage prior to exsolution. Electron probe analyses at mutual three-amphibole contacts showed little variation in the composition of each amphibole. Analyses believed to represent most closely the primary amphibole compositions gave atomic proportions on the basis of 23 oxygens per formula unit as follows: for primitive cummingtonite (Na0.02Ca0.21
– Mn0.06Fe2+
2.28Mg4.12Al0.28) (Al0.17Si7.83), for hornblende (Na0.35Ca1.56Mn0.02Fe1.71Mg2.85Al0.92) (Al1.37Si6.63), and for anthophyllite (Na0.10Ca0.06Mn0.06Fe2.25Mg4.11Al0.47) (Al0.47Si7.53). The reflections violating C-symmetry, on X-ray single crystal photographs of the primitive cummingtonite, are weak and diffuse, and suggest a partial inversion from a C-centered to a primitive clinoamphibole. Single crystal photographs of the anthophyllite show split reflections indicating it is an intergrowth of about 80% anthophyllite and about 20% gedrite which differ in their b crystallographic dimensions. Split reflections are characteristic of all analyzed orthorhombic amphiboles so far examined from Massachusetts and New Hampshire except the most aluminous gedrites, and the relative intensity of the gedrite reflections is roughly proportional to the degree of Na and Al substitution. The various extinctions of marine taxa in the Late Cenomanian can be shown as conforming to the 'step-wise extinction' model. The order of such extinctions is, however, compatible with the presence of an expanded oxygen minimum zone in the world ocean. The occurrence of iridium anomalies at this level in the succession may, however, indicate a volcanogenic control on the global environment.
