We continue our study of the consolidation of inhomogeneous clay soils with an analysis of the response of a soil mass, whose shear modulus increases linearly with depth, to axially symmetric pressure on its surface. This extends the work reported in Part I on the corresponding one-dimensional problem of a clay column, and generalizes researches of Gibson and coworkers on the elastic model of the soil (i.e., the initial response). Because of great mathematical complexity when Poisson's ratio is allowed to assume arbitrary values, we have confined ourselves (as did Gibson in several of his papers) to variations of the modulus from a zero surface value, this being in reasonable accord with published test results on London clay. Earthquake ground motion model is an essential part of seismic hazard assessment. The model consists in several empirical ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) that are considered to be applicable to the given region. When the recorded ground motion data are scarce, numerical modeling of ground motion based on available seismological information is widely used. We describe results of stochastic simulation of ground motion acceleration records for western Saudi Arabia. The simulation was performed using the finite fault model and considering peak ground acceleration and amplitudes of spectral acceleration at natural frequencies 0.2 and 1.0 s. Based on the parameters of the input seismological model that were accepted in similar previous studies, we analyze influence of variations in the source factor (stress drop) and in the local attenuation and amplification factors (kappa value, crustal amplification). These characteristics of the model are considered as the major contributors to the ground motion variability. The results of our work show that distribution of simulated ground motion parameters versus magnitude and distance reveals an agreement with the GMPEs recently used in seismic hazard assessment for the region. Collection of credible information about seismic source, propagation path, and site attenuation parameters using the regional ground motion database would allow constraining the seismological model and developing regional GMPEs. The stochastic simulation based on regional seismological model may be applied for generation of ground motion time histories used for development of analytical fragility curves for typical constructions in the region. 相似文献

In this study, scouring around piers perpendicular to flow (PPF) and piers toward the flow (PTF) under clear-water condition was examined by placing a set of triad cylindrical piers with a 5-cm diameter and a 15-cm center to center distance at the positions of 60, 90, and 120° of the bend at a constant flow rate of 70 l per second. Natural sand of uniform grain size and average diameter of 1 mm with a uniformity coefficient of 1.3 was used as bed material of the flume. According to the results of this study, the maximum scouring depth occurred in the PPF test situated at the position of 90° of the bend. In such a position, the maximum depth of scouring hole was equal to 1.1 times the depth of the flow at the beginning of the bend. Also, where the piers were positioned in PTF and PPF modes in a 60° angle, the maximum area of scouring hole was observed around piers and sediment piles at the downstream side of the piers. The maximum height of sedimentation occurred in the PPF test situated at the 90° position of the bend. Such a stack was as high as 0.7 times the flow depth at the beginning of the bend and was observed at the 156° position of the bend, at a 20% distance of the flume width from the inner bank. The elastic properties of six silicate garnet end members, among the most important rock-forming minerals, are investigated here for the first time via accurate ab initio theoretical simulations. The Crystal program is used, which works within periodic boundary conditions and allows for all-electron basis sets to be adopted. From the computed elastic tensor, Christoffel’s equation is solved along a set of crystallographic directions in order to fully characterize the seismic wave velocity anisotropy in such materials. Polycrystalline isotropic aggregate elastic properties are derived from the computed single-crystal data via the Voigt-Reuss-Hill averaging procedure. Transferability of the elastic properties from end members to their solid solutions with different chemical compositions is also addressed. 相似文献

The time fractional KdV equation is derived for small but finite amplitude electron-acoustic solitary waves in plasma of cold
electron fluid with two different temperature isothermal ions. The effects of the time fractional parameter on the electrostatic
solitary structures are presented. It is shown that the effect of time fractional parameter can be used to modify the amplitude
of the electrostatic waves (viz. the amplitude, width and electric field) of the electron-acoustic solitary waves. The model
may provide a possible explanation for the low-frequency component of the broadband electrostatic noise in the plasma sheet
