Harpacticoida taxocen diversity in the silty-sandy littoral zone of Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea

The fauna composition, ecological groups, and life forms of Harpacticoids of soft littoral grounds from 15 sites off the Karelian coast in Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea were studied. Six types of harpacticoid taxocens with different sets of dominating species are described. On silty sands with clear signs of desalination, the Stenchelia palustris taxocen is common; medium-grained sands are characterized by the Heterolaophonte minuta, Paraleptastacus kliei — Huntemannia jadensis, and Amphiascoides nanus — Scottopsyllus minor taxocens; while on coarse sands, the Ameira parvula and Ameira scotti — Mesochra lilljeborgi taxocens have developed. The diversity of the taxocens is partly explained by the differences in the grain-size composition and salinity at different sites. Juvenile coho salmon, Onchorynchus kisutch, were exposed to 95mTc in both saltwater and freshwater to study the biokinetic behavior of this element in an anadromous fish. In freshwater, equilibrium whole-body concentration factors (CF5) ranged from 28 to 32 in two separate experiments, in sharp contrast to an equilibriumCF of < 5 in saltwater. While the uptake kinetics were unimodal in saltwater, in freshwater, biomodal uptake kinetics were observed.Technetium-95m retention was biphasic in freshwater depuration experiments, an initial rapid loss of 21% to 26% of the steady-state activity with an elimination half-life of 3 to 5 days was followed by a slower loss rate, with a whole-body elimination half-life ranging from 23 to 33 days. In saltwater, retention was monophasic with an elimination half-life of 5–16 days. Dramatic decreases in 95mTc body burdens when freshwater-labeled fish are transferred to Tc-labeled saltwater indicate that the changes in physiology accompanying saltwater acclimation lead to the loss of 95mTc. 相似文献

Equations recently developed by Pitzer are applied to a seawater model on the assumption that only interactions between ions of opposite charge sign are significant. This model is shown to give good agreement with available experimental data for the osmotic coefficient and for the mean-ion activity coefficients of the major electrolyte components. The results are compared with the predictions of the ion-association model and with a number of models using the concept of specific ionic interaction. The relative merits of the various models are discussed. Pitzer's original equations are modified to enable the calculation of conventional single-ion activity coefficients. These values are compared with those obtained on the basis of alternative conventions and an encouraging measure of agreement is observed. It is concluded that the new model introduces a fluency into the specific interaction approach that should greatly facilitate the incorporation of trace components into future models. 相似文献
