Lake Superior sediments contain pollen whose changes through time can be corelated with dated pollen diagrams from small lakes in the region. A core collected in 1972 from the deep trough (265 m) off Silver Bay (47° 09′N, 91°20′W) penetrated 6.25 cm of taconite tailings, 55 cm of postglacial silty clay, and 93.5 cm of late-glacial varves. Seven levels in the core were dated by stratigraphic and palynological techniques. The varves stopped forming about 9000 years ago, probably when glacial ice retreated to the north shore. The last 100 varves accumulated at about 10 mm/yr, but the average net sedimentation rate subsequently slowed to 0.05 mm/yr until the time of settlement about 1890. The sedimentation rate then increased by a factor of 10, to 0.5 mm/yr until 1956 when taconite processing began. The postsettlement interval can be recognized by marked increases of ragweed and chenopod pollen that result from land disturbance caused by forest clearance and agriculture. The postsettlement interval is also present at the top of six cores from four other sites in western Lake Superior, collected in water from 25–140 m deep. The postsettlement sedimentation rate varies from 0.1–0.8 mm/yr, suggesting that man has greatly increased sediment yield to the lake in the last 80 years.  相似文献

Hydrothermal waters collected by “Alvin” from the Galapagos Spreading Center are enriched in222Rn by factors of 50–200 over bottom waters. The226Ra in the same samples, however, is enriched by less than a factor of four over bottom waters. Enrichments of222Rn result primarily from α-recoil from rock surfaces while226Ra enrichments are dominantly produced by high-temperature alteration of cooling ridge volcanics. The abundances of both nuclides exhibit positive correlations with temperature. The data extrapolate to bottom water temperatures and compositions, demonstrating the importance of seawater mixing. Different vents, however, have different mixing lines, and vents with high222Rn have low226Ra. We propose these patterns result from variations in the extent of low-temperature crustal interaction with the hydrothermal fluids. Low-temperature crustal waters can maintain high steady state222Rn contents due to the α-recoil additions to the fluids. The226Ra, however, is strongly adsorbed at low-temperatures resulting in low concentrations of this nuclide in low-temperature crustal waters. Thus, physical mixing of a crustal water component with hydrothermal waters or variable crustal path lengths of the hydrothermal fluids can account for the variable mixing lines and222Rn/226Ra values of the hot springs.The222Rn/226Ra value appears to be a sensitive indicator of low-temperature crustal interaction. Values > 100 have experienced extensive crustal interaction and are indicative of diffuse hydrothermal flow. Values between 1 and 10 are indicative of primary hydrothermal fluids which have not experienced significant interaction with the crust. Values of222Rn/226Ra between 103 and 104 are indicative of interaction of the hydrothermal fluids with sediments. Such values are observed in water samples from the Galapagos hydrothermal mounds.  相似文献

Analysis of the annual blue crab catch in Chesapeake Bay for the years 1922–1976 shows that there are variations with periods of 18.0, 10.7, and 8.6 years. Analysis of Philadelphia air temperatures shows periods of 17.5, 9.8, and 7.4 years. The periods of 18.0 and 17.5 years agree with the 18.6 year period of the Earth-Moon-Sun tidal force, and the periods of 8.6 and 7.4 years agree with the 8.8 year period of the Earth-Moon-Sun tidal force, within experimental error. The periods of 9.8 and 10.7 years, for the temperatures and crabs, respectively, are probably related to the 10.5 year sunspot cycle within experimental error.  相似文献

Summary Spectrometric experiments performed, in November 1976, within the framework of the Latitude Survey Mission on board the NASA Convair 990 from Ames Research Center are briefly deseribed. The results presented concern odd nitrogen molecules, HCl and water vapor. In terms of vertical column density, HNO3 is predominant over NO+NO2 at all latitudes higher than 40 degrees. A seasonal variation of NO2 abundance is observed, with larger values in the summer hemisphere at high latitude. The mean zenith column density of HCl above 11 km is 1.5×1015 mol.cm–2, with no evidence for any seasonal or climatic variation. Local number densities as high as 1.4×1010 mol.cm–3 for HNO3 and 5.4×1014 mol.cm–3 for water vapor have been measured during the same flight near 11 km.  相似文献

Results of the analyses of twenty-three samples from the Middle Miocene to Lower Pliocene strata from DSDP Site 467, offshore California, are presented. The analyses were performed with the aim of determining the origin of the organic matter, the stratigraphic section's hydrocarbon generation potential and extent of organic diagenesis. Organic carbon contents are an order of magnitude greater than those typically found in deep sea sediments, suggesting an anoxic depositional environment and elevated levels of primary productivity. Hydrocarbon generation potentials are above average for most samples. The results of elemental analyses indicate that the kerogens are primarily composed of type II organic matter and are thermally immature. Analysis of the bitumen fractions confirms that the samples are immature. In cores from 541 to 614 meters, the gas chromatograms of the C15+ non-aromatic hydrocarbon fractions are dominated by a single peak which was identified as 17α(H), 18α(H), 21β(H)-28, 30-bisnorhopane. This interval is the same area in which the highest degrees of anoxia are observed as reflected by the lowest pristane/phytane ratios. This correlation may have some implications with regard to the origin of the bisnorhopane and its possible use as an indicator of anoxic depositional conditions within thermally immature sediments.  相似文献

The lack of temporal resolution and accurate chronology of Southern Ocean marine cores has hampered comparison of glacial millennial-scale oscillations between the Southern Ocean, Antarctic ice and other records from both hemispheres. In this study, glacial climate variability is investigated over the last 50 ka using a multi-proxy approach. A precise chrono-stratigraphy was developed on the high-sedimentation rate core MD94-103 (Indian Southern Ocean, 45°35′S 86°31′E, 3560 m water depth) by geomagnetic synchronization between the later core and NAPIS75, and 14C dates. High-resolution time-series of δ18O in planktonic foraminifera Globigerina bulloides and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) estimated from the alkenone UK37 index and foraminifera assemblages have been generated. Temporal evolution of the two temperature proxy records is notably different during the last glacial period. While foraminifera data indicate a consistent cooling towards the last glacial maximum, anomalous warm glacial alkenone temperatures suggest a strong advection of warm “detrital” alkenones by surface waters of the Agulhas current. Superimposed to this general trend, during Heinrich events, foraminiferal SSTs point to warmer surface waters, while concurrent alkenone SSTs exhibit apparent coolings probably caused by enhanced local alkenone production. By analogy to modern observations, possible influence of ENSO-like conditions on the subantarctic Southern Ocean SSTs is discussed.  相似文献

Coral bleaching, involving the expulsion of symbiotic zooxanthellae from the host cells, poses a major threat to coral reefs throughout their distributional range. The role of temperature in coral bleaching has been extensively investigated and is widely accepted. A bleaching event was observed on the marginal high-latitude reefs of South Africa located at Sodwana Bay during the summer months of 2000. This was associated with increased sea temperatures with high seasonal peaks in summer and increased radiation in exceptionally clear water. The bleaching was limited to Two-mile Reef and Nine-mile Reef at Sodwana Bay and affected <12% of the total living cover on Two-mile Reef. Montipora spp., Alveopora spongiosa and Acropora spp. were bleached, as well as some Alcyoniidae (Sinularia dura, Lobophytum depressum, L. patulum). A cyclical increase in sea temperature (with a period of 5–6 years) was recorded during 1998–2000 in addition to the regional temperature increase caused by the El Niño Southern Oscillation phenomenon. The mean sea temperature increased at a rate of 0.27 °C year−1 from May 1994 to April 2000. High maximum temperatures were measured (>29 °C). The lowest mean monthly and the mean maximum monthly temperatures at which coral bleaching occurred were 27.5 and 28.8 °C, respectively, while the duration for which high temperatures occurred in 2000 was 67 days at 27.5 °C (4 days at 28.8 °C). Increased water clarity and radiation appeared to be a synergistic cause in the coral bleaching encountered at Sodwana Bay.  相似文献
