New data from three Tasman Sea cores support Keigwin's [1] observation that the δ13C of Pacific benthic foraminifera (and by inference bottom-water TCO2) decreased by 0.7‰ at about 6.5 Myr B.P. Simple box models are developed and used to test several hypotheses about the cause of the δ13C decrease. We favor the idea that the δ13C shift was due to a rapid change in TCO2 cycling within the oceans (such as would result from either a decrease in upwelling rate, or an increase in the fraction of PO43? reaching the deep oceans in particulate organic matter and a corresponding drop in the preformed PO43? concentration). The δ13C decrease across the shift might reflect either a global decrease in upwelling rate, or a different abyssal circulation pattern before the shift.  相似文献

Recent detailed mapping along the Motagua fault zone and reconnaissance along the Chixoy—Polochic and Jocotán—Chamelecón fault zones provide new information regarding the nature of Quaternary deformation along the Caribbean—North American plate boundary in Central America.The southern boundary of the Motagua fault zone is defined by a major active left-slip fault that ruptured during the February 4, 1976 Guatemala earthquake. The recurrent nature of slip along the fault is dramatically demonstrated where stream terraces of the Río El Tambor show progressive left-slip and vertical (up-to-the-north) slip. Left-slip increases from 23.7 m (youngest mappable terrace) to 58.3 m (oldest mappable terrace) and vertical slip increases from 0.6 m to 2.5 m. The oldest mappable terrace crossed by the fault appears to be younger than 40,000 years and older than 10,000 years.Reconnaissance along the Chixoy—Polochic fault zone between Chiantla and Lago de Izabal has located the traces of a previously unmapped major active left-slip fault. Geomorphic features along this fault are similar to those observed along the active trace of the Motagua fault zone. Consistent and significant features suggestive of left-slip have so far not been observed along the Guatemala section of the Jocotán—Chamelecón fault zone.In Central America, the active Caribbean—North American plate boundary is comprised of the Motagua, Chixoy—Polochic, and probably the Jocotán—Chamelecón fault zones, with each accommodating part of the slip produced at the mid-Cayman spreading center. Similarities in geomorphic expression, apparent amount of left-slip, and frequency and magnitude of historical and instrumentally recorded earthquakes between the active traces of the Motagua and Chixoy—Polochic fault zones suggest a comparable degree of activity during Quaternary time; the sense and amount of Quaternary slip on the Jocotán—Chamelecón fault zone remain uncertain, although it appears to be an active earthquake source. Uplift of major mountain ranges on the north side of each fault zone reflects the small but consistent up-to-the-north vertical component (up to 5% of the lateral component) of slip along the plate boundary. Preliminary findings, based on offset stream terraces, indicate a late Quaternary slip rate along the Caribbean—North American plate boundary of between 0.45 and 1.8 cm/yr. Age dating of offset Quaternary terraces in Guatemala will allow refinement of this rate.  相似文献

The presence of raised beaches and marine terraces along the Makran coast indicates episodic uplift of the continental margin resulting from large-magnitude earthquakes. The uplift occurs as incremental steps similar in height to the 1–3 m of measured uplift resulting from the November 28, 1945 (M 8.3) earthquake at Pasni and Ormara, Pakistan. The data support an E—W-trending, active subduction zone off the Makran coast.The raised beaches and wave-cut terraces along the Makran coast are extensive with some terraces 1–2 km wide, 10–15 m long and up to 500 m in elevation. The terraces are generally capped with shelly sandstones 0.5–5 m thick. Wave-cut cliffs, notches, and associated boulder breccia and swash troughs are locally preserved. Raised Holocene accretion beaches, lagoonal deposits, and tombolos are found up to 10 m in elevation. The number and elevation of raised wave-cut terraces along the Makran coast increase eastward from one at Jask, the entrance to the Persian Gulf, at a few meters elevation, to nine at Konarak, 250 km to the east. Multiple terraces are found on the prominent headlands as far east as Karachi. The wave-cut terraces are locally tilted and cut by faults with a few meters of displacement.Long-term, average rates of uplift were calculated from present elevation, estimated elevation at time of deposition, and 14C and U–Th dates obtained on shells. Uplift rates in centimeters per year at various locations from west to east are as follows: Jask, 0 (post-Sangamon); Konarak, 0.031–0.2 (Holocene), 0.01 (post-Sangamon); Ormara 0.2 (Holocene).  相似文献

Heavy mortality of guillemots in the Irish Sea was recorded in 1969 and was the subject of a detailed enquiry. Organochlorine contamination was thought to be a contributory factor, although this could not be conclusively established. These persistent pollutants remain in the environment and further mortalities might be expected if they were indeed responsible. In January, 1974 there was a further heavy loss of seabirds in the area and, this time, investigators were prepared and the incident was carefully monitored.  相似文献

During the middle Pleistocene Nome River glaciation of northwestern Alaska, glaciers covered an area an order of magnitude more extensive than during any subsequent glacial intervals. The age of the Nome River glaciation is constrained by laser-fusion 40Ar/39Ar analyses of basaltic lava that overlies Nome River drift at Minnie Creek, central Seward Peninsula, that average 470,000 ± 190,000 yr (±1σ). Milligram-size subsamples of the lava were dated to identify and eliminate extraneous 40Ar enrichments that rendered the mean of conventional K---Ar dates on larger bulk samples of the same flow too old (700,000 ± 570,000 yr). While the 40Ar/39Ar analyses provide a minimum limiting age for the Nome River glaciation, maximum ages are provided by a provisional K---Ar date on a basaltic lava flow that underlies the Nome River drift at nearby Lave Creek, by paleomagnetic determinations of the drift itself at and near the type locality, and by amino acid epimerization analysis of molluscan fossils from nearshore sediments of the Anvilian marine transgression that underlie Nome River drift on the coastal plain at Nome. Taken together, the new age data indicate that the glaciation took place between 580,000 and 280,000 yr ago. The altitude of the Anvilian deposits suggests that eustatic sea level during the Anvilian transgression rose at least as high as and probably higher than during the last interglacial transgression; by correlation with the marine oxygen-isotope record, the transgression probably dates to stage 11 at 410,000 yr, and the Nome River glaciation is younger still. Analyses of floor altitudes of presumed Nome River cirques indicate that the Nome River regional snowline depression was at least twice that of the maximum late Wisconsin. The cause of the enhanced snowline lowering appears to be related to greater availability of moisture in northwestern Alaska during the middle Pleistocene.  相似文献

Vertical exchange of heat, moisture and momentum above the earth's surface depends strongly on the turbulence generated by surface roughness. This roughness is best specified through the roughness length and the zero plane displacement. The ratio of windspeed to friction velocity was measured at four heights using the eddy correlation technique at a fallow savannah site in the Sahel. The change in this ratio with height was used to derive the zero plane displacement and the roughness length of the surface, together with an estimate of the error in each parameter. These were estimated as 0.93 ± 0.35 m and 0.17 ± 0.01 m, respectively. The method appears to be a more robust alternative to wind profile derivation.  相似文献

As for the total yieldR t =Y 1+...+Y t , it is shown that the bivariate sequence {R t ,Z t } is first-order Markovian, whereZ t is the storage at timet. A reversal of the conventional carbon isotope relationship, “terrestrial-lighter-than-marine” organic matter, has been documented for two Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) cyclothemic sequence cores from the Midcontinent craton of the central United States. “Deep” water organic-rich phosphatic black shales contain a significant proportion of algal-derived marine organic matter (as indicated by organic petrography, Rock-Eval hydrogen index and ratios) and display the lightest δ13C-values (max −27.80‰ for kerogen) while shallower water, more oxic facies (e.g. fossiliferous shales and limestones) contain dominantly terrestrial organic matter and have heavier δ13Ckerogen-values (to −22.87‰ for a stratigraphically adjacent coal). δ13C-values for extract fractions were relatively homogeneous for the organic-rich black shales with the lightest fraction (often the aromatics) being only 1‰, or less, more negative than the kerogen. Differences between extract fractions and kerogens were much greater for oxic facies and coals (e.g. saturates nearly 5‰ lighter than the kerogen).A proposed depositional model for the black shales calls upon a large influx of nutrients and humic detritus to the marine environment from the laterally adjacent, extremely widespread Pennsylvanian (peat) swamps which were rapidly submerged by transgression of the epicontinental seas. In this setting marine organisms drew upon a CO2-reservoir which was in a state of disequilibrium with the atmosphere, being affected by isotopically light “recycled-CO2” derived from the decomposition of peaty material in the water column and possibly from the anoxic diagenesis of organic matter in the sediments.  相似文献
