The timing of clastic sedimentation in two glacial‐fed lakes with contrasting watersheds was monitored using sequencing sediment traps for two consecutive years at Allison Lake (Chugach Range, Alaska) and four months at Shainin Lake (Brooks Range, Alaska). Shainin Lake is a weakly stratified lake fed by distant glaciers, whereas Allison Lake is more strongly stratified and fed predominantly by proximal glaciers. At Shainin Lake, sediment accumulation started in late June and reached its maximum in mid‐August, just before lake mixing and during a period of low river discharge. The grain size of the sediment reaching the sediment trap in Shainin Lake was homogenous throughout the summer. At Allison Lake, pulsed sedimentation of coarse particles during late summer and early fall storms were superimposed on the fine‐grained sedimentation pattern similar to that observed at Shainin Lake. These storms triggered underflows that were observed in the thermal structure of the lake and deposited abundant sediment. The sequencing sediment traps reveal a lag between fluvial discharge and sediment deposition at both lakes, implying limitations to interpreting intra‐annual sedimentary features in terms of inflow discharge.  相似文献

As we experience places, we learn about those places and generalize information into more abstract geographic categories. Rosch's basic-level theory argues that information known about objects is stored in our memories in a three-layered hierarchy. Data that could be used to test this theory in a geographic context was generated by having subjects make lists of activities, characteristics, and parts associated with 11 familiar geographic categories. An analysis of the distribution of information among the geographic categories confirmed two basic predictions of Rosch's theory. Significantly more information was stored in the basic-level geographic categories country, region, state, city, and neighborhood than in the superordinate category place. Significantly more information was not stored in subordinate categories home country, home region, home state, home city, and home neighborhood. The results suggest that geographic information is efficiently stored in memory so that much of what we know about geographic space is stored in basic-level categories that are both distinctive and informative.  相似文献

Holocene and modern travertine formed in spring-fed Havasu Creek of the Grand Canyon, Arizona, was studied to determine the factors governing its oxygen-isotope composition. Analysis of substrate-grown travertine indicates that calculated calcite-formation temperatures compare favorably with measured water temperatures, and include silt-rich laminae deposited by monsoon-driven floods. Ancient spring-pool travertine is dated by U-series at 7380 ± 110 yr and consists of 14 travertine-silt couplets of probable annual deposition. One hundred eighty high-resolution δ18O analyses of this mid-Holocene sample average −11.0‰ PDB. The average value for modern travertine is 0.5‰ lower, perhaps because mid-Holocene temperature was higher or there was proportionally greater summer recharge. δ18O cyclicity in the mid-Holocene travertine has average amplitude of 1.9 ± 0.5‰ PDB, slightly less than the inferred modern-day annual temperature range of Havasu Creek. The annual temperature range might have been reduced during the 14-yr interval compared to present, although other non-temperature factors could account for the muted annual variation. Silt-rich laminae within isotopically lower calcite in the modern and mid-Holocene travertine verifies the seasonal resolution of both samples, and suggests that similar temperature-precipitation conditions, as well as monsoon-generated summer floods, prevailed in the mid-Holocene as they do throughout the Grand Canyon region today.  相似文献

An elastic-plastic finite element method, based on the Prandtl-Reuss equations of plastic flow and involving equivalent stresses and strains, is used to study boudinage structure. Our choice of data for the simulations was guided by published stress-strain curves for marble (matrix) and quartzite (boudin), the essential parameters being yield stress and rock ‘hardness’ (defined by the slope of the stress-strain curve). All models assume an initial fracture and slight separation and therefore only simulate post-fracture behaviour. The simulations suggest that boudin shape is determined by boudin hardness; maximum stresses are concentrated in the corners which therefore shows the most shape modification. Matrix hardness determines the amount of boudin separation. Direct comparison with natural examples is restricted to boudins suffering no significant pre-fracture plastic deformation (i.e. rectangular- and barrel-shaped boudins), although other types are likely to have the characteristics of barrel and pinch-and-swell styles. The simulations do not consider the nature and timing of boudin-defining fractures but these are important in determining the style of boudinage which ultimately develops. Some mechanical problems associated with the infilling of inter-boudin gaps by ductile rock matrix are discussed and two models proposed. The first, based on yielding fracture mechanics, is used to explain boudins with wedge-shaped (or otherwise nonmatching) ends. The second, a hydraulic model, is proposed to account for gaps between rectangular boudins that are filled by ductile rock matrix.  相似文献
