Distinctive uptake mechanisms of different radiotracers by red clays in seawater are elucidated from the magnitude and change of distribution coefficients (Kd) for up to 17 γ-emitting radiotracers as functions of equilibration time, suspended particle concentration and compositions of solids and seawaters. The adsorption of ionic metals onto colloids and subsequent coagulation of colloids onto larger particles are the dominant removal processes of metals in the aquatic environments of low suspended particle concentration. 相似文献

A nested design was used to analyze the variance of the proportions or percent species composition of shore-zone finfish assemblages in the vicinity of the Millstone Nuclear Power Station in eastern Long Island Sound. The relative importance of five selected shore-zone species was found to be significantly influenced by both station and season within a year. Also included in the nested ANOVA model were effects due to period of plant operation (no units operating, one unit operating and two units operating) and year within period. Neither of these two effects was found to influence the percent species composition. The results of this study suggest that a nested ANOVA of percent species composition can be useful for detecting changes in assemblages of finfish species over time and space. 相似文献

Direct effects of pure humic substance (BS1 FA) on three different aquatic organisms (Ceratophyllum demersum, Dreissena polymorpha, and Chaetogammarus ischnus) were demonstrated in this study. Exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations (0.5 mg/L) of this humic substance led to the activation of the microsomal and soluble glutathione S‐transferase (GST) in Ceratophyllum demersum. Exposure to 3‐chlorobiphenyl showed also an elevation of GST activity, which is due to the proposed detoxication metabolism of these chlorinated biphenyl. Coexposure to a mixture of 3‐chlorobiphenyl and BS1 FA showed a reduction of enzyme elevation, but still significant over an untreated control. Estuarine seagrass ecosystems provide important habitat for fish and invertebrates and changes in these systems may alter their ability to support fish. The response of fish assemblages to alteration of eelgrass (Zostera marina) ecosystems in two ecoregions of the Mid-Atlantic Bight (Buzzards Bay and Chesapeake Bay) was evaluated by sampling historical eelgrass sites that currently span a broad range of stress and habitat quality. In two widely separated ecoregions with very different fish faunas, degradation and loss of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) habitat has lead to declines in fish standing stock and species richness. The abundance, biomass, and species richness of the fish assemblage were significantly higher at sites that have high levels of eelgrass habitat complexity (biomass >100 wet g m?2; density <100 shotts m?2) compared to sites that have reduced eelgrass (biomass <100 wet g m?2; density <100 shoots m?2) or that have completely lost eelgrass. Abundance, biomass, and species richness at reduced eelgrass complexity sites also were more variable than at high eelgrass complexity habitats. Low SAV complexity sites had higher proportions of pelagic species that are not dependent on benthic habitat structure for feeding or refuge. Most species had greater abundance and were found more frequently at sites that have eelgrass. The replacement of SAV habitats by benthic macroalgae, which occurred in Buzzards Bay but not Chesapeake Bay, did not provide an equivalent habitat to seagrass. The Myggbukta caldera complex and a swarm of basic dykes constitute the latest Tertiary magmatism in the Hold with Hope region,
East Greenland. The Sr and Nd isotope ratios of these rocks show coherent variations which extend to high 87Sr/86Sr and low 143Nd/144Nd values and require a contribution from continental lithosphere. Broad correlations with major element differentiation indices
suggest that the continental component was incorporated during magmatic differentiation thereby favouring a crustal contamination
process. Trace element concentrations are strongly correlated with isotopic compositions but display ranges for many incompatible
elements which extend beyond likely crustal contaminant compositions. This is readily modelled by AFC processes in which the
dominant cause of trace element enrichment is the concentration effect of fractional crystallisation rather than the composition
of the contaminant. The simplest such models still require unrealistically high degrees of fractional crystallisation to explain
the ten-fold enrichment of some trace elements. This can be overcome if the primary magmas entering the crust already had
highly variable trace element compositions. Such variability is readily achieved if melts from different parts of the melting
column escape without thorough homogenization. An AFC model which incorporates variability in parental magma composition is
then able to simulate the range of compositions observed at Hold with Hope. This carries the implication that the variations
observed are more readily attributed to changes in uncontaminated parental magma than to variations in the composition or
amount of contaminant.

Concentrations of Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, and Pb and binding capacities for Cd, Cu, and Pb were determined for water samples collected
from 12 lakes in southwestern Maine using atomic absorption and ion-selective electrodes, respectively. Surface waters in
this area are soft and characterized by low pH. Some lakes were highly colored with refractory organics, whereas others had
very low organic carbon concentrations. Both Cu and Pb concentrations were positively correlated with organic carbon content.
Copper and Pb binding capacities were significantly correlated with organic carbon content, whereas Cd binding capacity was
positively correlated with pH, but not with organic carbon. Surface water binding capacity for Pb was greater than that for
Cu or Cd. More than 99% of the Ca from all waters studied was removed onto cationic exchange resins. Less than 1% of the total
Cu existed as cationic species in highly humic waters, whereas as much as 65% existed as cationic species in less huic waters.
Conversely, more than 99% of the Cd present in humic waters existed as cationic species, whereas as little as 50% existed
as cationic species in less humic, more alkaline waters. These correlative studies indicate that binding by organic carbon
is important for both Cu and Pb in this area and must be considered in models of trace metal speciation. However, Cd binding
in the same waters is not correlated with organic carbon, which does not need to be considered in speciation models for Cd. 相似文献

Pollen analysis of lake sediments reveals that small areas of till and outwash in northcentral Upper Michigan have influenced plant distributions throughout postglacial time. Each substrate has different textural characteristics. Modern forest communities form a mosaic, with jack pine woodlands occupying the medium sands of the Yellow Dog Plains outwash and white pine-hardwood communities on both till and outwash soils in the Michigamme Highlands to the south.The analysis of modern pollen samples from 21 lakes within the area indicates that pollen can be used to study the distribution of local vegetation in relation to substrate type. Fossil pollen from three of the lakes documents the character of ancient forest on Yellow Dog outwash, Michigamme outwash, and Michigamme till.Unique boreal communities occupied each area immediately after deglaciation. Between 8000 and 7000 y.a., white pine and maples migrated into the study area and replaced jack pine in forests on the Highlands, but not on the Plains. Jack pine has continued to occupy the Plains since early postglacial time. White pine reached highest densities on Michigamme outwash, and deciduous trees increased primarily on till during the presumably dry climates which existed 8000-5000 yr BP. As the climate became more mesic, forests on the Highlands changed, so that by 3000 yr BP the communities on Michigamme outwash and till were indistinguishable on the basis of pollen. Present-day forest patterns of the area became established at that time.Pollen influx rates, measured at each lake, generally support interpretations based on pollen percentages and were similar to values reported elsewhere. Two long-term studies were conducted to determine toxicity, uptake and depuration of Kepone in blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus). In the first, Kepone was administered to crabs in seawater (0.03 or 0.3 μg Kepone/I) or food (eastern oyster,Crassostrea virginica, containing 0.25 μg/g Kepone). Uptake of Kepone in 28 days was primarily through the contaminated oysters. When these crabs were held in Kepone-free seawater and fed Kepone-free oysters for 28 days, no loss of the insecticide was evident. There were adverse effects on molting and survival in crabs fed oysters that contained 0.25 μg/g Kepone. A second study was conducted to determine: (1) the depuration of Kepone over a 90-day period in blue crabs fed oysters from the James River, Virginia (containing 0.15 μg/g Kepone); and (2) the effects of Kepone on molting and survival of blue crabs fed James River oysters or laboratory-contaminated oysters that contained 0.15 or 1.9 μg/g Kepone. Crabs fed Kepone-contaminated oysters followed by a diet of Kepone-free oysters for 90 days had detectable concentrations of the insecticide in tissues. Also, blue crabs that ate oysters containing Kepone in concentrations similar to those found in oysters from the James River, died or molted less frequently than crabs fed Kepone-free oysters meats. 相似文献

Physiography has been studied in the United States for more than 75 years, but only recently has it been applied to land use
planning. Advantages of a physiographic approach are that it 1) focuses on the problems at the proper scale and conserves
energy, effort, and time by selecting the critical parameters, 2) stresses geologic structure and process as factors which
should control land use, and 3) presents data in a form which the non-geologically trained planner can easily understand.
In 1928 Fenneman delineated and described the provinces and sections of the United States. This paper proposes a classification
of smaller physiographic units and presents two examples of how they can be used for planning purposes. Below the section,
the units used in this paper are the subsection, the land type, and the topographic element. Subsections delineate areas of
distinct geologic structure or process whereas land types delineate ranges in the intensity of those processes. Topographic
