Report of the Science Community Workshop on the proposed First Sample Depot for the Mars Sample Return Campaign

The Mars 2020/Mars Sample Return (MSR) Sample Depot Science Community Workshop was held on September 28 and 30, 2022, to assess the Scientifically-Return Worthy (SRW) value of the full collection of samples acquired by the rover Perseverance at Jezero Crater, and of a proposed subset of samples to be left as a First Depot at a location within Jezero Crater called Three Forks. The primary outcome of the workshop was that the community is in consensus on the following statement: The proposed set of ten sample tubes that includes seven rock samples, one regolith sample, one atmospheric sample, and one witness tube constitutes a SRW collection that: (1) represents the diversity of the explored region around the landing site, (2) covers partially or fully, in a balanced way, all of the International MSR Objectives and Samples Team scientific objectives that are applicable to Jezero Crater, and (3) the analyses of samples in this First Depot on Earth would be of fundamental importance, providing a substantial improvement in our understanding of Mars. At the conclusion of the meeting, there was overall community support for forming the First Depot as described at the workshop and placing it at the Three Forks site. The community also recognized that the diversity of the Rover Cache (the sample collection that remains on the rover after placing the First Depot) will significantly improve with the samples that are planned to be obtained in the future by the Perseverance rover and that the Rover Cache is the primary target for MSR to return to Earth.     

Identification of Prorocentrum minimum and Takayama pulchella by fluorescence in situ hybridization through epifluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry

Partial rDNA sequences of Prorocentrum minimum and Takayama pulchella were amplified, cloned and sequenced, and these sequence data were deposited in the GenBank. Eight oligonucleotide probes (DNA probes) were designed based on the sequence analysis. The probes were employed to detect and identify P. minimum and T. pulchella in unialgal and mixed algal samples with a fluorescence in situ hybridization method using flow cytometry. Efficient expression of green fluorescent protein （GFP） mediated by a chimeric promoter in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

To improve the expression efficiency of exogenous genes in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii,a high efficient expression vector was constructed.Green fluorescent protein(GFP) was expressed in C.reinhardtii under the control of promoters:RBCS2 and HSP70A-RBCS2.Efficiency of transformation and expression were compared between two transgenic algae:RBCS2 mediated strain Tran-Ⅰ and HSP70A-RBCS2 mediated strain Tran-Ⅱ.Results show that HSP70A-RBCS2 could improve greatly the transformation efficiency by approximately eightfold of RBCS2,and the expression efficiency of GFP in Tran-Ⅱ was at least double of that in Tran-Ⅰ.In addition,a threefold increase of GFP in Tran-Ⅱwas induced by heat shock at 40°C.All of the results demonstrated that HSP70A-RBCS2 was more efficient than RBCS2 in expressing exogenous gene in C.reinhardtii.     

Evaluation of estimation methods for meiofaunal biomass from a meiofaunal survey in Bohai Bay

Pediculate Brachiopod Diandongia pista from the Lower Cambrian of South China

The Chengjiang Lagerstatte has been celebrated for prolific soft-bodied fossils. Based on specimens recently excavated in the Chengjiang Lagerstatte by the Early Life Institute, Northwest University, Diandongia pista Rong, 1974, is directly revealed to be a pediculate brachiopod, assigned to the Family Botsfordiidae, as is further confirmed by the exceptionally preserved vascular system including dorsal and ventral mantle canals. These specimens described herein exhibit some peculiarities, notably the extremely thin and long pedicles, which suggest that Diandongia is epifaunal rather than burrowing brachiopod. A study of this group of animals indicates that they may be vital to understand the relationship between the lingulids and the remaining brachiopods, and the character evolution of the early Cambrian brachiopods.     

微生物介导的土壤甲烷循环及全球变化研究

甲烷是主要的温室气体之一, 目前在大气中的含量达1.7×10-6m3·m-3, 比工业革命前增加了115%, 并以1%年增长速度稳定增长. 甲烷吸收太阳远红外光的能力比CO2高20～30倍, 对全球增温的贡献率达15%. 多年来对大气甲烷的产生、转运和循环以及调控的研究表明, 80%以上的甲烷是通过微生物的活动产生的, 一部分在进入大气前被微生物吸收利用, 这样, 大气中甲烷的净含量绝大部分是甲烷产生微生物和甲烷营养微生物相互作用的结果. 因此, 研究甲烷产生菌和甲烷氧化菌的活动规律和生态学特征, 有利于揭示微生物介导的甲烷循环过程, 并探索减排的措施. 已知有80多种甲烷产生菌和100余种甲烷氧化菌, 它们的种类和生态多样性比较广泛, 环境差异和波动影响它们的生理代谢活性, 从而导致甲烷排放的波动性和不确定性. 在未来全球变化条件下, 天然湿地作为重要的甲烷源之一, 如何响应和反馈环境的变化是研究的重点领域.     

华南二叠系栖霞组菊花状天青石锶同位素特征及其地质意义

菊花状天青石是华南地区栖霞组内一种特殊的矿物集合体,形成于早期成岩作用阶段。在研究其成因过程中,系统分析了湖北黄石和湖南浏阳栖霞组内菊花状天青石的Sr同位素组成以及湖南浏阳、湖北黄石、江西永丰和广西来宾四处天青石假象、天青石围岩（泥晶灰岩）和围岩中方解石脉的Sr同位素组成。Sr同位素分析结果表明,天青石中的87Sr/ 86Sr最高值为0.707525,最低值为0.706981,平均值为0.707215。与天青石相比,天青石假象、天青石围岩和方解石脉的87Sr/ 86Sr值整体相对富含87Sr。由于天青石假象和方解石脉明显为晚期成岩作用成因,它们相对富含87Sr的锶同位素特征应是晚期成岩作用叠加的结果,与其类似的泥晶灰岩的87Sr/ 86Sr值也可能同样受到了晚期成岩作用的影响。栖霞组菊花状天青石比同组泥晶灰岩更好地记录了栖霞期海水的Sr同位素组成。     

The Planck cluster survey

The Planck Satellite will survey the entire sky in 9 millimeter/submillimeter bands and detect thousands of galaxy clusters via their thermal Sunyaev‐Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. The unprecedented volume of the survey will permit the construction of a unique catalog of massive clusters out to redshifts of order unity. We describe the expected contents of this catalog and use an empirical model of the intra‐cluster gas to predict the X‐ray properties of Planck SZ clusters. Using this information we show how a ∼10 Ms follow‐up program on XMM‐Newton could increase by ∼100‐fold the number of clusters with measured temperatures in the redshift range z = 0.5–1. Such a large sample of well‐studied massive clusters at these redshifts would be a powerful cosmological tool and a significant legacy for XMM‐Newton. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
