In compliance with the New Jersey Private Well Testing Act, 78,546 wells (93,787 samples, including samples from 13,290 wells that were analyzed more than once) were analyzed for total coliform (TC) bacteria by one or more of 39 laboratories over a 10‐year period. Samples containing TC bacteria were further analyzed for the presence of either fecal coliform or E. coli (FC/EC) bacteria. The large population of wells sampled multiple times permitted a systematic study of the effect of repeat sampling on coliform bacteria detection rates. The detection rate increased with the number of times wells were sampled. In bedrock, TC bacteria were detected in 21% of the population of wells analyzed only once, 33% in the population sampled twice, and 43% in the population sampled three times. It was estimated that TC bacteria would be detected in 90% of all wells if each well was analyzed 10 times. For FC/EC bacteria, it was estimated that 21 and 68 samples, respectively, would be required to reach the 50% and 90% population detection rates. In the Coastal Plain (CP), many more samples would be required to achieve the same estimated population detection rates. The population detection rate estimates were also dependent on the type of method used, the pH of the well water, and the geologic formation in which wells were located. Estuaries, commonly, are densely populated areas serving the needs of the inhabitants in multiple ways. Often the interests
are conflicting and decisions need to be made by the local managers. Intake of fresh water for consumption, agricultural purposes
or use by industries may take place within a region not far landward of the limit of salt intrusion. Human interventions (e.g.
deepening of the navigation channels) or climate changes (sea level rise, reduction of the river discharge) can bring these
intake locations within the reach of saline or brackish water and consequently endanger their function. To support policy
and managerial decisions, a profound knowledge of processes associated with the salinity structure in estuaries is required.
Although nowadays advanced numerical three-dimensional models are available that are able to cope with the complexity of the
physics there is still a need for relatively simple tools for quick-scan actions in a pre-phase of a project or for instructive
purposes. The analytical model described in this paper may serve these needs. It computes the maximum salinity distribution
using the dispersion coefficient in the mouth as the only model parameter. The model has been calibrated using observational
data in a large number of estuaries and experimental data in a tidal flume. The dispersion coefficient was successfully related
to geometric and hydrodynamic parameters resulting in an expression that can be used for convergent estuaries as well as prismatic
channels, see Eqs. 25a and 25b. Application of the model in a predictive mode showed its promising capabilities. Comparison with three-dimensional numerical
models indicates that the channel geometry in the estuary mouth largely influences dispersive processes. The analytical model
for salt intrusion may be used in combination with the analytical model for tidal propagation in convergent estuaries and
tidal channels by Van Rijn (part I). In this way, input is obtained on the tidal velocity amplitude and the Chézy roughness

The aim of the atmospheric nitrogen inputs into the coastal ecosystem (ANICE) project is to improve transport–chemistry models that estimate nitrogen deposition to the sea. To achieve this, experimental and modelling work is being conducted which aims to improve understanding of the processes involved in the chemical transformation, transport and deposition of atmospheric nitrogen compounds. Of particular emphasis within ANICE is the influence of coastal zone processes. Both short episodes with high deposition and chronic nitrogen inputs are considered in the project. The improved transport–chemistry models will be used to assess the atmospheric inputs of nitrogen compounds into the European regional seas (the North Sea is studied as a prototype) and evaluate the impact of various emission reduction strategies on the atmospheric nitrogen loads. Assessment of the impact of atmospheric nitrogen on coastal ecosystems will be based on comparisons of phytoplankton nitrogen requirements, other external nitrogen inputs to the ANICE area of interest and the direct nitrogen fluxes provided by ANICE. Selected results from both the experimental and modelling components are presented here. The experimental results show the large spatial and temporal variability in the concentrations of gaseous nitrogen compounds, and their influences on fluxes. Model calculations show the strong variation of both concentrations and gradients of nitric acid at fetches of up to 25 km. Aerosol concentrations also show high temporal variability and experimental evidence for the reaction between nitric acid and sea salt aerosol is provided by size-segregated aerosol composition measured at both sides of the North Sea. In several occasions throughout the experimental period, air mass back trajectory analysis showed connected flow between the two sampling sites (the Weybourne Atmospheric Observatory on the North Norfolk coast of the UK and Meetpost Noordwijk, a research tower at 9 km off the Dutch coast). Results from the METRAS/SEMA mesoscale chemistry transport model system for one of these cases are presented. Measurements of aerosol and rain chemical composition, using equipment mounted on a commercial ferry, show variations in composition across the North Sea. These measurements have been compared to results obtained with the transport–chemistry model ACDEP which calculates the atmospheric inputs into the whole North Sea area. This study shows that the use of the first-order additional components of the ray method in the seismic wave field modeling is easy and that it can bring a substantial improvement of the standard ray results obtained with the zero-order ray approximation only. For the calculation of a first-order additional component, spatial derivatives of the parameters of the medium and spatial derivatives of the zero-order ray amplitude term are necessary. The evaluation of the former derivatives is straightforward; the latter derivatives can be calculated approximately from neighboring rays by substituting the derivatives by finite differences. This allows an effective calculation of the first-order additional terms in arbitrary laterally varying layered media.The importance of the first-order additional terms is demonstrated by the study of individual higher-order terms of the ray series representing elementaryP andS elastodynamic Green functions for a homogeneous isotropic medium. The study shows clearly that the consideration of the first-order additional terms leads to a more substantial decrease of the difference between approximate and exact elementary Green functions than any other higher-order term. With this in mind, effects of the first-order additional terms on the ray synthetic seismograms for aVSP configuration are studied. It is shown that the use of the additional terms leads to such phenomena, unknown in the zero-order approximation of the ray method, like quasi-elliptical and transverse polarization of a singleP wave or longitudinal polarization of a singleS wave. 相似文献

The Gran Sasso range is a striking salient formed by two roughly rectilinear E–W and N–S limbs. In the past 90° counterclockwise (CCW) rotations from the eastern Gran Sasso were reported [Tectonophysics 215 (1992) 335], suggesting west–east increase of rotation-related northward shortening along the E–W limb. In this paper, we report on paleomagnetic data from Meso-Cenozoic sedimentary dykes and strata cropping out at Corno Grande (central part of the E–W Gran Sasso limb), the highest summit of the Apennine belt. Predominant northwestward paleomagnetic declinations (in the normal polarity state) from both sedimentary dykes and strata are observed. When compared to the expected declination values for the Adriatic foreland, our data document no thrusting-related rotation at Corno Grande. The overall paleomagnetic data set coupled with the available geological information shows that the Gran Sasso arc is in fact a composite structure, formed by an unrotated-low shortening western (E–W trending) limb and a strongly CCW rotated eastern salient. Late Messinian and post-early Pliocene shortening episodes documented along the Gran Sasso front indicate that belt building and arc formation occurred during two distinct episodes. We suggest that the southern part of a late Messinian N–S front was reactivated during early–middle Pliocene time, forming a tight range salient due to CCW rotations and differential along-front shortening rates. The formation of a northward displacing bulge in an overall NW–SE chain is likely a consequence of the collision between the Latium-Abruzzi and Apulian carbonate platforms during northeastward propagation of the Apennine wedge, inducing lateral northward extrusion of Latium-Abruzzi carbonates towards ductile basinal sediment areas. 相似文献

The Scheldt is a tidal river that originates in France and flows through Belgium and the Netherlands. The tides create significant flood risks in both the Flemish region in Belgium and the Netherlands. Due to sea level rise and economic development, flood risks will increase during this century. This is the main reason for the Flemish government to update its flood risk management plan. For this purpose, the Flemish government requested a cost-benefit analysis of flood protection measures, considering long-term developments. Measures evaluated include a storm surge barrier, dyke heightening and additional floodplains with or without the development of wetlands. Some of these measures affect the flood risk in both countries. As policies concerning the limitation of flood risk differ significantly between the Netherlands and Flanders, distinctive methodologies were used to estimate the impacts of measures on flood risk. A risk-based approach was applied for Flanders by calculating the impacts of flood damage at different levels of recurrence, for the base year (2000) and in case of a sea level rise of 60 cm by 2100. Policy within the Netherlands stipulates a required minimal protection level along the Scheldt against storms with a recurrence period of 1 in 4,000 years. It was estimated how flood protection measures would delay further dyke heightening, which is foreseen as protection levels are presently decreasing due to rising sea levels. Impacts of measures (safety benefits) consist of delays in further dyke heightening. The results illustrate the importance of sea level rise. Flood risks increased fivefolds when a sea level rise of 60 cm was applied. Although more drastic measures such as a storm surge barrier near Antwerp offer more protection for very extreme storms, a combination of dykes and floodplains can offer higher benefits at lower costs. 相似文献

Drying of masonry specimens was monitored by means of a two-dimensional (2D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique. The
external surfaces stayed wet for longer if NaCl was present instead of pure water only. This corroborates many practical observations
that salts aggravate dampness in masonry. A slower evaporation process and not hygroscopicity was the cause. That suggests
that salt-induced dampness may, in general, arise simply from changes in the drying process of masonry materials. That also
implies that the height and depth at which crystallization occurs in walls may depend on the relative equilibrium humidity
(RHeq) and other properties of salts that influence drying of porous materials. Evaporation rates of free surfaces of pure
water and saturated NaCl solution were measured by a gravimetric technique. The results indicate that slow drying of salt-contaminated
materials is not due only to the lower RHeq of salt solutions. The effective surface of evaporation is likely to be reduced
perhaps due to blocking of pores by salt crystals. Final salt-distribution maps of the specimens show that: (a) salts may
affect the inner materials of the masonry, even in evaporation-induced processes that lead crystallization to occur predominantly
on the external surface; (b) distinct internal distribution patterns occur if masonry composition varies.

Land subsidence is presented in many factors in different areas with urbanization. Internal soil erosion, owing to pumping confined groundwater during the deep foundation pit construction, has contributed to land subsidence. Four governing equations are presented to describe the process of internal soil erosion based on the mathematical–physical model. The finite element computation results, based on practical deep foundation pit engineering consisted of 8 layers of soil of Shanghai area, demonstrate that internal soil erosion will cause the increment of land subsidence and deformation and is related to the hydraulic gradient and the characters of the soils. 相似文献

Stable isotopes (C, O, S) and mineralogical studies of the world-class amethyst-geode deposits of the Los Catalanes gemological
district, Uruguay, constrain processes operative during mineral deposition. The mineralized basaltic andesites from the Cretaceous
Paraná volcanic province are intensely altered to zeolites (clinoptilolite) and clay minerals. Variations in the δ18O values of silica minerals in geodes (chalcedony, quartz, and amethyst) are much larger and the values generally somewhat
lower (21.2–31.5‰) in the Uruguayan deposits than in the Ametista do Sul area of southern Brazil. The range of δ34S values (−15.0 to −0.3‰) of altered basaltic rocks requires (in addition to sulfur of magmatic origin) the involvement of
34S-depleted sedimentary sulfur from bacterial sulfate reduction. The results delimit the mineralizing processes to a post-eruption
environment characterized by low temperature and strong interaction of the lava flows with meteoric water. 相似文献
