The radio emission from Jupiter at 10, 21 cm wavelength has been measured with a spatial resolution of the order of 1 Jupiter radius. This may be analytically reduced to the emission per cubic centimeter of source at each measured frequency. The theoretically predicted synchrotron emission of electrons as a function of frequency, magnetic field and electron energy can then be compared to the observed source emissivity to obtain the number density and ‘temperature’ of the electrons. Present observations taken at different epochs are not sufficiently reliable to infer peak energies within an order of magnitude. Nevertheless the present results indicate that electrons diffuse in rapidly (in a time of the order of months) conserving the first adiabatic invariant and reach a peak energy at about 2 Jupiter radii. The electron energy decreases rapidly nearer the planet because of energy lost to radiation in the large magnetic field close to the planet. 相似文献

An analysis was performed on 29,574 densities derived from the drag of 10 satellites to determine simultaneously the parameters of the solar-activity effect in the thermosphere on the one hand, and the amplitude and shape of the diurnal-variation curve on the other. This paper reports on the study of the diurnal variation only.Although a considerable amount of smoothing is inherent in the drag method, it seemed useful to see whether we could detect any change in the shape of the diurnal-variation curve with height, latitude and solar activity. None was detected: the curve remains remarkably stable, symmetric, with a maximum at 14 hr 20 min L.S.T. and a minimum at 2 hr 20 min L.S.T. The type III carbonaceous chondrites Kainsaz and Efremovka have been analysed for eighteen major, minor and trace elements by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. A comparison of the data on Kainsaz with four other Ornans sub-type carbonaceous chondrites reveals a remarkable degree of constancy of composition. Efremovka, together with Leoville and Coolidge, may be distinguished from the other Vigarano sub-type carbonaceous chondrites by their lower Na and K contents, variable Na/K ratios and relatively low Ca/Al ratios. Some observations are made on the ratio Na/K in various types of stony meteorite; the magnitude of the ratio in the basaltic achondrites appears to be more similar to that in the carbonaceous chondrites than in the ordinary chondrites. 相似文献

It is suggested that the overall early melting of the lunar surface is not necessary for the explanation of facts and that
the structure of highlands is more complicated than a solidified anorthositic ‘plot’. The early heating of the interior of
the Moon up to 1000K is really needed for the subsequent thermal history with the maximum melting 3.5 × 109 yr ago, to give the observed ages for mare basalts. This may be considered as an indication that the Moon during the accumulation
retained a portion of its gravitational energy converted into heat, which may occur only at rapid processes. A rapid (t < 103 yr) accretion of the Moon from the circumterrestrial swarm of small particles would give necessary temperature, but it is
not compatible with the characteristic time 108 yr of the replenishment of this swarm which is the same as the time-scale of the accumulation of the Earth. It is shown that
there were conditions in the circumterrestial swarm for the formation at a first stage of a few large protomoons. Their number
and position is evaluated from the simple formal laws of the growth of satellites in the vicinity of a planet. Such ‘systems’
of protomoons are compared with the observed multiple systems, and the conclusion is reached that there could have been not
more than 2–3 large protomoons with the Earth. The tidal evolution of protomoon orbits was short not only for the present
value of the tidal phase-lag but also for a considerably smaller value.
The coalescence of protomoons into a single Moon had to occur before the formation of the observed relief on the Moon. If
we accept the age 3.9 × 109 yr for the excavation of the Imbrium basin and ascribe the latter to the impact of an Earth satellite, this collision had
to be roughly at 30R, whereR is the radius of the Earth, because the Moon at that time had to be somewhere at this distance. Therefore, the protomoons
had to be orbiting inside 20–25R, and their coalescence had to occur more than 4.0x109 yr ago. The energy release at coalescence is equivalent to several hundred degrees and even 1000 K. The process is very rapid
(of the order of one hour). Therefore, the model is valid for the initial conditions of the Moon. 相似文献

We consider the gas-liquid first-order phase transitions and prove the existence of the critical point in white dwarf matter. The latent heat released in the liquefaction processes can be used in the interpretation of the spreading of the white dwarf sequence in H-R diagram. The hydrodynamic equations for an ideal, inviscid, fully ionized hydrogen gas in a gravitational, but not magnetic, field are solved by an explicit Lax-Wendroff two-step technique using a one-dimensional slab symmetry. Radiation and thermal conductivity are included. The model spans 100000 km starting from the chromosphere-corona transition region. The UCSD solar X-ray instrument on the OSO-7 satellite observes X-ray bursts in the 2–300 keV range with 10.24 s time resolution. Spectra obtained from the proportional counter and scintillation counter are analyzed for the event of November 16, 1971, at 0519 UT in terms of thermal (exponential spectrum) and non-thermal (power law) components. The energy content of the approximately 20 × 106K thermal plasma increased with the 60 s duration hard X-ray burst which entirely preceded the 5 keV soft X-ray maximum. If the hard X-rays arise by thick target bremsstrahlung, the nonthermal electrons above 10 keV have sufficient energy to heat the thermally emitting plasma. Based on an analysis of the catalog of magnetic fields, we have investigated the statistical properties of the mean magnetic
fields for OB stars. We show that the mean effective magnetic field B of a star can be used as a statistically significant characteristic of its magnetic field. No correlation has been found
between the mean magnetic field strength B and projected rotational velocity of OB stars, which is consistent with the hypothesis about a fossil origin of the magnetic
field. We have constructed the magnetic field distribution function for B stars, F(B), that has a power-law dependence on B with an exponent of ≈−1.82. We have found a sharp decrease in the function F(B) for B ⩽ 400 G that may be related to rapid dissipation of weak stellar surface magnetic fields. 相似文献
