Activities of the cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (MO) system and GSH-transferase (GST) were monitored about every 2 weeks in sockeye salmon during their sexual migration and ultimate death. Liver cytosol and microsomes were prepared from the tissue of 50 individuals, five males and five females at each collection. The activities observed were not significantly different between the sexes. Substantial changes occurred in cytochrome P450, cytochrome b5 and the monitored activities during the migration. The most dramatic changes occurred at the spawning grounds and were evident even before spawning occurred. The cytochrome P450 and cytochrome b5 contents increased while the MO and GST activities decreased. Pre-spawning MO and GST activities were similar to those reported for other species undergoing sexual maturation. Migrating salmon offer an interesting model for studying the regulation of sex-dependent and terminal forms of cytochromes P450, MO and phase II activities. 相似文献

The production of eggs in a fish population is a fundamental parameter in fisheries management and ecology. Management decisions are based largely on the abundance and composition of the spawning stock; hence it is essential to estimate the contribution of viable eggs by females of various ages, which may depend on the size and maturation schedules in females of younger ages, and the size and reproductive senescence of older ones. The level of recruitment may also be influenced by the size and quality of eggs. Egg quality can be characterised in a number of ways; however, the most useful methods are those that are efficient and widely available. Estimating potential fecundity and egg size in fish and invertebrate populations has been hindered by the processing time, toxicity, and resources required by traditional methods. We have developed an imaging-based technique that counts and measures oocytes from a gravimetric gonadal sub-sample in relatively little time and at low cost. Sub-samples were preserved in a non-toxic formulation of Gilson's solution, which offers an alternative to other preservatives commonly used in fecundity studies. The technique uses high-resolution optical scans of plated oocytes, imaging software, and user-defined object classifications to separate oocyte from ancillary material likely to be present in a processed sample. Estimates of misclassification are as low as 1% (false-negatives) in automated counts. 相似文献

Atlantic tomcod (Microgadus tomcod) from the Hudson River (HR) are resistant at the molecular and organismic levels to the effects of exposure to dioxin-like aromatic hydrocarbon (AH) compounds, but much less so to benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P). The aims of this study were to determine in early life-stages of tomcod exposed to B[a]P: (1) if DNA binding levels differed between fish from the HR and Miramichi River (MR), and (2) if co-exposure to chromium could modulate this genotoxic effect. After exposure to [(3)H]B[a]P alone, DNA-bound radioactivity was 5-10-fold higher in embryos and larvae of MR than HR descent. Co-exposure to chromium modulated DNA binding levels in offspring of both populations. In MR embryos, co-exposure to chromium inhibited B[a]P uptake. These results demonstrated resistance to the genotoxic effects of B[a]P in early life stages of HR tomcod at an ecologically important endpoint and suggest the ability of chromium to modulate AH-induced genotoxicity. 相似文献

The Baikal sediment box corer represents an innovation in design of the closing mechanism and involves a single, thin, and flexible stainless steel blade rather than closing jaws. With this light-weight box corer only a relatively small cross-sectional area is offered to the sediment, allowing easier penetration. The closure blade is propelled smoothly across the base of the box in a downwardly convex path by a set of constant force springs. Depending on choice of blade-release mechanisms, the corer can either be triggered immediately as the support cable slackens, after a delay of a few seconds, or immediately upon retrieval. The box corer has been used successfully to sample poorly consolidated sediments in freshwater lakes over a depth range of 8 to 1624 m. Cores of deep-water surficial sediment from Lake Baikal were tested for representativity and replicability by profiling natural and artificial radioisotopes and lithostratigraphic features. 相似文献

Established and emerging technologies for treatment of flotation wastewaters are compared and discussed in the context of their applicability during the management of wastewaters from Cu–Co ores processing through flotation in the Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The effects from water recycling on water quality and flotation performance are briefly presented in parallel. The ore processing schemes and the wastewater management practices at two operational concentrators are illustrated as study cases and their peculiarities outlined. A reference to a copper concentrator in a nearby Zambia is addressed for comparative purpose. Based on analysis of the findings, the clarification, bio-treatment inside the tailing ponds or the use of constructed wetlands as polishing stage prior to water reuse are suggested as feasible treatment approaches in view improving the management practice of flotation wastewaters during the dressing of copper ores in the Katanga province. 相似文献

The effectiveness of bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) on commercial pots designed to capture blue crabs Callinectes sapidus was tested in the York River on Felgates Creek (37.2667 N, −76.5850 W) over the period 4 June through 31 July 2009. For each
of 10 pairs of pots, one had BRDs affixed to all four entrance gapes and the other had none. Pots were baited approximately
once each week but were sampled for blue crabs and bycatch 6 of 7 days each week for the duration of the study. More than
one fourth of 1,643 total crabs were caught on the first day after baiting, and for these 7 days, no statistical difference
was detected between either the number or size of legal-size crabs caught in BRD versus non-BRD pots. Of 51 Malaclemys terrapin and 44 fish caught as bycatch throughout the study, all but three fish were captured in non-BRD pots. BRDs exclude bycatch

This paper considers the origin of water on Mars, in the context of a dynamical model that accounts for most of the Earth's water as a product of collisions between the growing Earth and planet-sized “embryos” from the asteroid belt. Mars' history is found to be different; to explain the present mass of Mars requires that it suffer essentially no giant collisions and the bulk of its growth is through addition of smaller bodies. Asteroids and comets from beyond 2.5 AU provide the source of Mars' water, which totals 6-27% of the Earth's present ocean (1 Earth ocean≡1.5×1021 kg), equivalent to 600-2700-m depth on the martian surface. The D/H ratio of this material is 1.2-1.6 times Standard Mean Ocean Water, the smaller value obtaining for the larger amount of water accreted. The upper half of the range of total water accreted, while many times less than that acquired by the Earth, is consistent with geological data on Mars, and the D/H value is that derived for martian magmatic water from SNC meteorites. Both together are consistent with published interpretations of the high D/H in present-day martian atmospheric water in terms of water loss through atmospheric escape. 相似文献

Abstract A major concept in urban geography deals with determining the spheres of influence for urban centers. This paper describes an instructional module used in two different geography courses showing students how a model might be developed to measure spheres of influence for multiple urban centers within a given region. A geographic information system (GIS) is employed throughout the development of the model. This module is incorporated into a traditional undergraduate urban geography course and a beginning GIS course. The software packages used are MapViewer and Grapher.
