Lithological and biological features of a fossiliferous tufa in the Kapthurin Formation, Baringo, Kenya, reveal the presence of a lush wetland in a semi-arid environment during the Middle Pleistocene ( ca 500 ka) in this portion of the East African Rift Valley. Four geological sections, each between 3 m and 8 m in thickness, exposed over a distance of 0·5 km, reveal a 1 to 2 m thick paludal tufa which is composed of three carbonate beds, two dark grey silty claystones and a reddish-brown silty palaeosol. High resolution stratigraphic analysis, carbonate petrography, stable isotope and elemental geochemistry, clay mineralogy and fossil remains (molluscs, ostracods, diatoms and charophytes) reveal a ground water-fed system that fluctuated in depth and periodically disappeared altogether. Oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) of tufa matrix range from −4·5‰ to −8·0‰ (Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite) and become more positive up section, indicating the decreasing influence of fault-related fluids and increasing residence time or freshness of wetland water, rather than evaporative enrichment. This spring was situated on a lake margin during low lake levels, thrived during periods of increased ground water input and was ultimately replaced by an alkaline lake. The wetland would appear to have existed during a cool interval within the generally warm Marine Isotope Stage 13 or perhaps during the warm second half of Marine Isotope Stage 13. The ground water source of this wetland arose through a fault system. Thus, the position of the tufa deposit is controlled structurally but the timing and duration of the wetland system may have been influenced by both climatic and tectonic factors.  相似文献

Analyses of quartz sand grain shape, sediment influx rates and foraminifera define glacial and non-glacial episodes in a 9.69 m core from Frobisher Bay, Arctic Canada. Five radiocarbon dates on organic matter provide a preliminary core chronology, with a basal date of 11,910 yr BP. Quartz sand grain morphology is measured for samples at seven core levels using: (1) Fourier shape analysis; (2) percentage of grain surface conchoidally fractured. Samples at 2.0 and 7.5 m are most fractured and have Fourier roughness coefficients similar to particles sampled directly from glacier ice. These two samples probably represent glacial events in the core. Major intervals of non-carbonate sand influx occur at 9.0–4.5 m and 3.5–1.5 m, separated by several thousand years of slower sedimentation. Detrital carbonate influx rates are relatively high prior to 4.3 m, then decline rapidly indicating a shift in sediment provenance from limestones flooring Frobisher Bay to rafting from far-travelled icebergs. Bio- and lithostratigraphic analysis allows definition of five core units: (1) an environment similar to today below 8.5 m; (2) glacial conditions from 8.5–6.8 m, associated with ice proximal to the core site; (3) ameliorating conditions from 6.8 to 3.2 m; (4) cooler conditions from 3.2 to 0.5 m, probably related to increased iceberg flux rather than neoglacial advances of nearby ice caps; (5) an environment similar to today from 0.5 m. Sand grains sampled at 7.5 and 2.0 m, whose shapes indicate they are derived from glacier ice, lie within the cooler or glacial units defined from foraminiferal analysis. This indicates that quantitative measurement of particle surface morphology can provide useful environmental information in studies of marine cores.  相似文献

The near-surface layer of the dominant microhabitat types on a peatland in the Rainy River area, northwestern Ontario, Canada was dated using a number of previously published methods. No single method was found to be appropriate in all microhabitat types, and discrepancies of up to 15 yr over a time-scale of 80 yr were encountered. The results suggested that the post-depositional mobility of 210Pb, and possibly its atmospheric supply, are affected by microhabitat type. 210Pb dates consistently underestimated independently derived dates in the uppermost sections of the cores. Ages derived by measuring the length of annual increments on moss stems were in general agreement with the 210Pb dates, but were subject to bias where the moss remains were poorly preserved. 14C analyses on material from the base to the near-surface horizon confirmed the modern (post-AD 1950) origin suggested by the 210Pb and moss increment dates. Increased ash content at the base of the near-surface layer was correlated with the dustbowl of the 1930s, but assignment of dates to other stratigraphic markers (charcoal, Ambrosia pollen, and Larix needles) was less certain. The ash peak (55 yr before AD 1990) was used as datum for relative dating methods based on assumptions of a constant rate of peat accumulation (constant bulk density method) and constant rate of pollen accumulation (pollen density method). The constant bulk density method provided quick, inexpensive estimates of maximum age, but could not be extrapolated beyond datum, nor applied to cores showing marked stratigraphic changes. The pollen density method was a valuable but time-consuming alternative for dating peatland depressions, which lack annual moss increments and are subject to 210Pb leaching.  相似文献

We investigate the expected emission from coronal transients in the following spectral lines observable with the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) on board SOHO: Hi L 1216 Å, Ovi 1032–1037 Å, Nv 1239–1243 Å, Mgx 610–625 Å, Sixii 499–521 Å, and Fexii 1242 Å. We calculate line intensities and profiles for typical CME conditions, and we analyse their relation with the properties of the perturbed coronal region. We find that significant changes in UV line intensities are produced during a coronal transient. An overall decrease of the Hi L intensity is found, which is mainly due to the Doppler dimming produced by the increase in plasma outflow velocity. The emission from heavy ions is instead mainly affected by variations in plasma density and temperature. We expect to compare these results with the future UVCS observations of coronal transients.  相似文献

In differing ways, linguistics and geography each observes that a name's significance is connected to a society. According to lexical theory, a word is arbitrary: Its sound and meaning have no intrinsic link; its function is grammatical. Names are, however, special words. We bestow names based on how they sound or on what they may already have come to represent; names are not arbitrary. In turn, toponyms are special names, and as example we discuss a specific one, “New Orleans.” Far from an arbitrary pairing of form and meaning, this toponym reveals that names reflect the experience of the people who use them.  相似文献
