Loop Current Frontal Eddies (LCFE) in the Gulf of Mexico are simulated with a regional configuration of the Princeton Ocean Model using a feature-oriented initialization technique. The initialization procedure is based on a prior investigation of stability characteristics of the Loop Current (LC). Zonal channel experiments conducted with a multi-layer intermediate equations model allowed to identify conditions necessary for formation and growth of frontal eddies. After the termination of phosphogypsum discharges to the Huelva estuary (SW Spain), a unique opportunity was presented to study the response of a contaminated environmental compartment after the cessation of its main source of pollution. The evolution over time of uranium concentrations in the estuary is presented to supply new insights into the decontamination of a scenario affected by Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) discharges. The cleaning of uranium isotopes from the area has not taken place as rapidly as expected due to leaching from phosphogypsum stacks.An in-depth study using various techniques of analysis, including 234U/238U and 230Th/232Th ratios and the decreasing rates of the uranium concentration, enabled a second source of uranium contamination to be discovered. Increased uranium levels due to acid mine drainage from pyrite mines located in the Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Spain) prevent complete uranium decontamination and, therefore, result in levels nearly twice those of natural background levels. 相似文献

On May 28, 1998, a moderate size earthquake of mb 5.5 occurred offshore the northwestern part of Egypt (latitude 31.45°N and
longitude 27.64°E). It was widely felt in the northern part of Egypt. Being the largest well-recorded event in the area for
which seismic data from the global digital network are available, it provides an excellent opportunity to study the tectonic
process and present day stress field occurring along the offshore Egyptian coast. The source parameters of this event are
determined using three different techniques: modeling of surface wave spectral amplitudes, regional waveform inversion, and
teleseismic body waveform inversion. The results show a high-angle reverse fault mechanism generally trending NNW–SSE. The
P-axis trends ENE–WSW consistently with the prevailed compression stress along the southeastern Hellenic arc and southwestern
part of the Cyprean arc. This unexpected mechanism is most probably related to a positive inversion of the NW trending offshore
normal faults and confirms an extension of the back thrusting effects towards the African margin. The estimated focal depth
ranges from 22 to 25 km, indicating a lower crustal origin earthquake owing to deep-seated tectonics. The source time function
indicates a single source with rise time and total rupture duration of 2 and 5 s, respectively. The seismic moment (M
o) and the moment magnitude (M
w) determined by the three techniques are 1.03 × 1017 Nm, 5.28; 1.24 × 1017 Nm, 5.33; and 1.68 × 1017 Nm, 5.42; respectively. The calculated fault radius, stress drop, and the average dislocation assuming a circular fault model

Concepts for the Evaluation of Contaminant Mobility in Soil and Waste Materials Elution tests (S4, pHstat, and SDS test) are presented, enabling the evaluation of the mobility of hydrophilic/hydrophobic and inorganic/organic contaminants in soil and waste materials. While elution tests for estimation of the mobilization potential of hydrophilic substances are performed following the pHstat method, for hydrophobic species surfactant-containing eluents are used. The individual parameters of the elution process are selected assuming a "worst-case" scenario. We update and reevaluate the scientific information on the distribution, history, and causes of continental shelf hypoxia
that supports the 2001 Action Plan for Reducing, Mitigating, and Controlling Hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (Mississippi
River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force 2001), incorporating data, publications, and research results produced
since the 1999 integrated assessment. The metric of mid-summer hypoxic area on the LouisianaTexas shelf is an adequate and
suitable measure for continued efforts to reduce nutrients loads from the Mississippi River and hypoxia in the northern Gulf
of Mexico as outlined in the Action Plan. More frequent measurements of simple metrics (e.g., area and volume) from late spring
through late summer would ensure that the metric is representative of the system in any given year and useful in a public
discourse of conditions and causes. The long-term data on hypoxia, sources of nutrients, associated biological parameters,
and paleoindicators continue to verify and strengthen the relationship between the nitratenitrogen load of the Mississippi
River, the extent of hypoxia, and changes in the coastal ecosystem (eutrophication and worsening hypoxia). Multiple lines
of evidence, some of them representing independent data sources, are consistent with the big picture pattern of increased
eutrophication as a result of long-term nutrient increases that result in excess carbon production and accumulation and, ultimately,
bottom water hypoxia. The additional findings arising since 1999 strengthen the science supporting the Action Plan that focuses
on reducing nutrient loads, primarily nitrogen, through multiple actions to reduce the size of the hypoxic zone in the northern

Petrography and geochemistry (major, trace and rare earth elements) of clastic rocks from the Lower Cambrian Lalun Formation, in the Posht-e-badam block, Central Iran, have been investigated to understand their provenance. Petrographical analysis suggests that the Lalun conglomerates are dominantly with chert clasts derived from a proximal source, probably chert bearing Precambrian Formations. Similarly, purple sandstones are classified as litharenite (chertarenite) and white sandstones as quartzarenite types. The detrital modes of purple and white sandstones indicate that they were derived from recycled orogen (uplifted shoulders of rift) and stable cratonic source. Most major and trace element contents of purple sandstones are generally similar to upper continental crust (UCC) values. However, white sandstones are depleted in major and trace elements (except SiO2, Zr and Co) relative to UCC, which is mainly due to the presence of quartz and absence of other Al-bearing minerals. Shale samples have considerably lower content in most of the major and trace elements concentration than purple sandstones, which is possibly due to intense weathering and recycling. Modal composition (e.g., quartz, feldspar, lithic fragments) and geochemical indices (Th/Sc, La/Sc, Co/Th, Cr/Th, Cr/V and V/Ni ratios) of sandstones, and shales (La/Sc and La/Cr ratios) indicate that they were derived from felsic source rocks and deposited in a passive continental margin. The chondrite-normalized rare earth element (REE) patterns of the studied samples are characterized by LREE enrichment, negative Eu anomaly and flat HREE similar to an old upper continental crust composed chiefly of felsic components in the source area. The study of paleoweathering conditions based on modal composition, chemical index of alteration (CIA), plagioclase index of alteration (PIA) and A–CN–K (Al2O3 − CaO + Na2O − K2O) relationships indicate that probably chemical weathering in the source area and recycling processes have been more important in shale and white sandstones relative to purple sandstones. The results of this study suggest that the main source for the Lalun Formation was likely located in uplifted shoulders of a rifted basin (probably a pull-apart basin) in its post-rift stage (Pan-African basement of the Posht-e-badam block). 相似文献

Sublethal Effects of Crude Oil on the Community Structure of Estuarine Phytoplankton 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
While the ecological impacts of crude oil exposure have been widely studied, its sublethal effects on phytoplankton community
structure in salt marsh estuaries have not been well documented. The purpose of this study was to simulate oil spill conditions
using a microcosm design to examine short-term (2 day) changes in phytoplankton community composition and total biomass following
exposure to crude oil obtained from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and a mixture of Texas crude oils. Microcosm experiments
were performed in situ in North Inlet Estuary near Georgetown, SC. A control and six replicated experimental treatments of
crude oil additions at final concentrations of 10, 50, or 100 μl l−1 of either Deepwater Horizon spill oil or the Texas crude mixture were incubated under in situ conditions. Photopigments were
analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography and community composition was determined using ChemTax. Total phytoplankton
biomass (as chl a) declined with increasing crude oil concentrations. Prasinophytes, the most abundant microalga in both experiments, showed
no response to oil exposure in one experiment and a significant negative response in the other. Diatoms euglenophytes and
chlorophytes appeared relatively resistant to oil contamination at the exposure levels used in this study, maintaining or
increasing their relative abundance with increasing oil concentrations. Chlorophytes and cyanobacteria increased in relative
abundance while cryptophyte abundance decreased with increasing oil concentrations. The results of these experiments suggest
that low levels of crude oil exposure may reduce total biomass and alter phytoplankton community composition with possible
cascade effects at higher trophic levels in salt marsh estuaries. 相似文献

According to geological, petrological, geochemical, and geochronological studies, the Haraa Gol terrane in the western Hentiyn Mts. is dominated by two rock assemblages of different ages, associated with the initiation and development of the island arcs and marginal spreading seas of the Mongol–Okhotsk Ocean. The Late Cambrian, Early Ordovician, and Middle Ordovician were marked by the effusion of basalt and basaltic andesite and the formation of gabbro and gabbro-dolerite in back-arc spreading basins. In the Late Silurian–Devonian, after a short pause, tectonomagmatic processes were activated, with the formation of differentiated island-arc volcanics, gabbro, and granitoids. Their absolute 40Ar–39Ar age is given in the paper. The model age of the TNd(DM) protolith of the Haraa Gol igneous rocks corresponds to the composition of the Mesoproterozoic juvenile crust. 相似文献

The Permo-Carboniferous Schmidgaden, Weiden, Erbendorf and Stockheim basins from southern Germany host discontinuous seams of high ash coal and carbargillites which were mined for hard coal, explored for uranium and only recently have proved their source rock potential for gaseous and fluid hydrocarbons. Alteration and facies of these carbonaceous beds were geologically and chemically investigated. During silicification which is exclusively confined to the carbonaceous interbeds of pyroclastic depositions, element depletion prograded except for Zn, Pb, U. The anoxic environments under consideration may be subdivided into fluvial/swamp (Upper Westphalian beds from Schmidgaden, Weiden, Erbendorf and Stockheim) and lacustrine depositions (Upper Stephanian and Upper Autunian carbargillites from Erbendorf, Weiden-Bechtsrieth). SiO2, MgO, CaO, Mo and Zr have proved to be most suitable for recognition of these environments, whereas, U, K2O and notably Cu/Zn are less appropriate. In the ternary plots displaying the organic chemistry of extracts of these carbonaceous beds fluvial swamps have low and lacustrine beds high contents of saturated hydrocarbons. All samples show a pronounced OEP (=odd even predominance) of n-alkanes which partly are environment-controlled (terrestrial origin), partly maturity-controlled. The high iso- and cyclo-alkanes of Schmidgaden and bimodal n-alkyl distribution point to a contribution of algal material. Finally four basin types bearing carbonaceous rocks are discussed with respect to their economic potential and compared with basins elsewhere (Cerilly, Lodève, St. Hippolyte, Uinta): type I: intramontane fault-bounded basin (swamp), type II: volcanic-depression with steep relief (swamps), type III: halfgraben (lake), type IV: volcanic-depression with smooth relief (lake). Types I and II are of interest for hard coal, organic-hosted U-deposits and mainly gasprone; types III and IV, however, show good source-rock potential for crude oil. 相似文献
