We found high potential activities of alkaline phosphatase associated with particles (0.2 μm or greater size fraction) in deep waters (1000–4000 m) of the central Pacific Ocean. The potential enzyme activity at depth (0.03 – 0.3 nM h−1) was up to 50% of that at the surface (0–125 m). In contrast, activities of α- and β-d-glucosidase in the deep layer were low (generally less than 1 % of those in the upper layer), yielding up to two orders of magnitude difference in the ratio of alkaline phosphatase and α- and β-d-glucosidase activities with depth. It is unlikely that the phosphatase is actively produced by microorganisms inhabiting the deep-sea environment, where labile organic carbon supply is limited and phosphate concentration is high (2.4 – 3.0 AM). Instead, deep-water phosphatase is probably supplied by rapidly sinking particles and their subsequent fragmentation and dissolution. Different distributions of phosphatase and glucosidase indicate that sinking particles of phytoplankton origin are an important source of alkaline phosphatase enzymes in the deep sea.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of nitrous oxide and other inorganic nitrogen compounds in the sediments in Tokyo Bay and its vicinity were measured using the whole core squeezing method. Within the bay area, vertical profiles of nitrous oxide in the interstitial waters showed one or two distinctive peaks around the depth of 2–4 cm, which corresponded to the peaks of nitrite and nitrate. In situ formation of nitrous oxide through nitrification was suggested in those sediments, which was possibly activated by the presence of benthic animals. On the other hand, at the deep sediment off Tokyo Bay the profiles of nitrous oxide, nitrite and nitrate gave a monotonous single peak, indicating less bioturbated condition. Denitrification or dissimilatory nitrate reduction might be important for the formation of nitrous oxide peaks in the latter type of sediment.  相似文献

A one-dimensional numerical model with a level-2.5 turbulent closure scheme to provide vertical mixing coefficients has been used to investigate the process by which the dichothermal water is formed in the Bering Sea, the density of which is about 26.6 sigma-theta. The water column to be simulated is assumed to move along a predetermined path. That is, the present model is of the Lagrangian-type. Surface boundary conditions are given using the climatologies of heat, freshwater and momentum fluxes. In order to obtain a plausible moving speed of the water column along the path, pre-liminary experiments were done using the surface fluxes in the central part of the Bering Sea for the initial temperature and salinity profiles at the entrance of the Sea. As a result, it was found that the temperature minimum layer, i.e., the dichothermal water with temperature similar to the climatology at the exit of the Bering Sea, was formed after about two years of integration. Based on the result, the movement speed of the water column along the path was set as 4.5 cm/s in the standard run. It was found that this model could plausibly reproduce the subsurface temperature minimum layer. That is, the dichothermal water was formed in the winter mixed layer process in the Bering Sea. The existence of the subsurface halocline (pycnocline) prohibited the deeper penetration of the winter mixed layer, and therefore water with a temperature colder than that under the mixed layer was formed in the mixed layer due to wintertime surface cooling. In the warming season this water remains as the subsurface temperature minimum layer between the upper seasonal thermocline and the lower halocline. Consumption of silicate and nitrate (Si:N molar ratio) in the upper layer of the pelagic subarctic Pacific in summer was evaluated by a regression analysis of silicate vs. nitrate concentrations at the upper 100 m depth. Based on data of three cruises, the pelagic subarctic Pacific can be classified into two groups. First group is characterized by roughly 1:1 consumption of silicate and nitrate, and occupies rather larger area of subarcfic Pacific, i.e., the Gulf of Alaska and the Western Subarctic gyre (averaged slope of Si:N linear regression: 1.21, n = 10 and 1.45, n = 9, respectively). Second group is the regions of the Bering Sea basin and the Oyashio region, and showed higher silicate consumption compared to that of nitrate (averaged slope of Si:N linear regression: 2.14, n = 9 and 2.36, n = 3, respectively). The Si:N difference observed is possibly attributed to relative contribution of diatoms production among the phytoplankton assemblages in the regions, i.e., dominance of diatoms production in the regions of the second group. Higher accumulation of ammonium at the bottom of euphotic layer in the summer Bering Sea basin would also contribute to increase consumption ratio of Si:N amounts.  相似文献

The clay minerals in the 18 core samples collected from the northern, equatorial and southeastern Indian Ocean are illite, chlorite, montmorillonite and kaolinite. In the fraction finer than 2 in the surface layer (top to 5 cm deep) of each core, the relative abundance of clay minerals varies widely from area to area. Kaolinite possesses the maximum proportion of the clay mineral composition and chlorite has the minimum proportion.Kaolinite is particularly dominant in sediments near off the northwestern coast of Australia. In the factions finer and coarser than 2 of the surface layer, montmorillonite and kaolinite tend to be abundant in the fraction finer than 2, and chlorite and illite tend to be abundant in the fraction coarser than 2. In some cores, kaolinite-rich layers in sediments which are considered to have been transported by turbidity currents from the Bay of Bengal are found. Turbidity currents appear partly a role in transport of sediments to the equatorial Indian Ocean.As to the relation between the vertical change of clay mineral composition and geochronological data, montmorillonite and kaolinite tend to be more abundant in interglacial ages than in glacial ages, while illite and chlorite tend to exhibit opposite trend.Muscovite and biotite highly concentrated in the cores Ka-9 and Ka-15 collected from the equatorial Indian Ocean seem to originate from granite or gneiss of Ceylon and/or India.  相似文献

Pumping rate of a mud shrimp,Callianassa japonica, in its burrow was measured by continuous monitoring of dye concentration in the burrow water. Measurement of dilution in two directions from stained overlying seawater to normal burrow water andvice versa, gave no significant difference in results. The rate of exchange (v) of burrow water was estimated from,v=(u tu 0)V/(mu t−1)t, whereV is volume of burrow water,u 0,u t−1 andu tis dye concentration of burrow water at time 0,t−1 andt, respectively, andm is dye concentration of overlying water. The pumping rate ranged from 0.63 to 5.46 ml min−1, which corresponded to a turnover time for the burrow water of 7–51 min. Short term changes in the pumping rate were correlated to intermittent behaviour of the shrimp in the burrow.  相似文献

This article reviews the author's study on waves in planetary fluids for which the Okada Prize of the Oceanographical Society of Japan was awarded in 1981. The contents of the review are i) some connections of planetary waves with the large-scale ocean circulation, ii) stability of planetary waves, iii) the relationship between mean currents and planetary waves, iv) the influence of topography on the mean current, v) a simple relationship between wave dissipation and viscous boundary layers and vi) some ageostrophic effects on large-scale phenomena. Clay minerals in the <2 fraction of the four deep-sea cores collected from the northeast and central North Pacific are studied. In the surface layers of the cores, illite is more dominant in the pelagic samples than in the near-shore ones, and montmorillonite is vice versa. Chlorite in the near-shore sample is relatively abundant in the areas of higher latitude than in those of lower latitude. Kaolinite content is less than 10 percent in all samples. The presence of particles of amphibole in the clay-size was confirmed by X-ray analysis in the whole of the core-st. 18 taken from the northeastern portion of the area. This fact suggests that, for a long time probably since the Tertiary age, particles of amphibole have been supplied from source areas. In the three cores except the core-st. 18 it is shown that montmorillonite clearly increases downward. It is suggested that montmorillonite has been derived from volcanic glassy material by a diagenetic change. Montmorillonite in the bottom layer (400–405 cm) of the core-st. 9 is particularly rich in iron.  相似文献

Responding to the recommendation at the first Meeting of the International Coordination Group for the Cooperative Study of the Kuroshio and Adjacent Regions (CSK) 1965, a series of nitrate standard solutions consisting of eight different concentrations ranging from 0 to 50g-at NO3-N/l in 30.5 sodium chloride solution with the highest purity was prepared for nitrate-N determination in seawater. The solutions have been proved to be stable at least 520 days after preparation.The best way of handling and conditioning the copper-cadmium column was studied for securing the perfect and reproducible conversion of nitrate to nitrite for the procedure as proposed byWood et al. (1967).It was also shown that the method can be applied to freshwater samples by the addition of sodium chloride and adjusting pH properly.  相似文献
