Five heat flow measurements were made in the Asiatic Mediterranean Sea; two in the Celebes Sea and three in the Sulu Sea. The mean of all five values of 2.0 cal/cm2 sec is significantly greater than the over-all mean heat flow value for the oceans and is close to the mean value for marginal seas. Seasonal and interannual variations in physicochemical properties (i.e., temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and dissolved inorganic nutrients), chlorophyll a (Chl-a), particulate carbon and nitrogen (PC and PN, respectively), and primary production were investigated in the neritic area of Sagami Bay, Kanagawa, Japan, from January 2002 to December 2008. These abiotic/biotic variables, except for NH4 +–N, repeated similar seasonal variations for all 7 years. On the basis of the analysis of data obtained on 167 sampling dates, depth-integrated primary production in this water can be easily estimated from Chl-a at the surface using the regression equations obtained in the present study. Intermittently high values of dissolved inorganic nutrients, Chl-a, PC, PN and primary productivity at the surface during the summer stratified period were induced by high freshwater discharge from the rivers after rainfalls and by the expansion of nutrient-rich Tokyo Bay Water. Temperature, salinity and dissolved inorganic nutrients showed drastic variations within a scale of a few days and/or weeks, and these variations were related to sea levels that represent the intrusion of the Kuroshio Water, Intermediate Oyashio Water or deep water from the continental slope. However, there was no consistent trend in the variations in Chl-a, PC, PN and primary production due to the complex effects of these waters.  相似文献

Cementitious materials used for radioactive waste repository construction complicate the performance assessment of radioactive waste systems because the use of cement may greatly alter the pH (8–13) of groundwater and release constituents such as calcium ions. Under such conditions, it is important to clarify also the dynamic behavior of silica (silicic acid), in order to evaluate the alteration in the chemical and physical properties of the fractured layer or the host rock surrounding the repository. Since silica undergoes polymerization, precipitation or dissolution depending on the pH and/or temperature, the behavior of silica would be greatly complicated in the presence of other ions. This study is focused on the deposition rates of polysilicic acid and soluble silicic acid with up to 10−3 M Ca ions. In the experiment, Na2SiO3 solution (250 mL, pH > 10, 298 K) was poured into a polyethylene vessel containing amorphous silica powder (0.5 g), and a buffer solution, HNO3, and CaNO3 as Ca ions were sequentially added into the vessel. The pH of the solution was set to 8. The silica, initially in a soluble form at pH > 10 (1.4 × 10−2 M), became supersaturated and either deposited on the solid surface or changed into the polymeric form. Then the concentrations of both poly- and soluble silicic acid were monitored over a 40-day period. The decrease of polysilicic acid became slow with an increase in the concentration of Ca ions in the range of up to 10−3 M. In general, the addition of electrolytes to a supersaturated solution accelerates the aggregation and precipitation of polymeric species. However, the experimental result showed that polysilicic acid in the presence of Ca ions is apparently stable in solution, compared with that under a Ca-free condition. On the other hand, the concentration of soluble silicic acid in the presence of Ca ions immediately became metastable, that is, slightly higher than the solubility of soluble silicic acid. We investigated the mercury concentrations in red meat from pilot whales consumed by some residents of the Japanese whaling town, Taiji, and in hair samples from 50 residents for their maker of mercury burden. The methyl mercury (M-Hg) level in the red meat was 5.9 μg/wet g, markedly higher than the US FDA action level and Cordex Alimentarius guideline level for predatory fish (1.0 μg/wet g). The average level of total mercury (T-Hg) in the hair from residents who ate whale meat more than once a month was 24.6 μg/g, whereas the average from the residents who did not consume any whale meat was 4.3 μg/g. The T-Hg concentrations in the hair from three donors exceeded 50 μg/g, the level for NOAEL set by WHO. The T-Hg level found in the Taiji whale meat consumers was markedly higher than that observed in the Japanese population overall (about 2 μg/g).  相似文献

Abstract   Both marine and terrigenous organic matter are deposited in shelf and continental slope environments. In the present study, the relationship between environmental changes in the Choshi area and the sedimentation of organic matter was examined. The sediments of the Choshi core were deposited on a shelf environment and their lithology and ichnofacies, as well as the composition of the contained kerogen (insoluble organic matter) indicate a shallowing upward succession. The organic matter preserved in the sediments is of both marine and terrigenous origin, on the basis of C/N ratios (5.90–9.45), δ13C values (−21.6‰−24.6‰) and kerogen microscopy. The total organic carbon (TOC) content (0.39–1.08%) of the sediments shows a positive correlation with the increase of terrigenous organic matter before 500 ka, but decreases (0.26–0.61%) after 500 ka as the shelf environment becomes shallower because of dilution, caused by the input of terrigenous inorganic clasts, and oxidation. The variation in TOC contents was thus influenced by the increasing sedimentation rate of terrigenous materials, including both organic and inorganic particles as the basin filled.  相似文献

This study investigates whether a balanced impact damper (BID) with a vertically suspended impact body colliding with shock absorbing rubber can suppress vibrations of a floor slab subjected to walking and vertical seismic excitations. The impact body is suspended by coil springs to sustain its deadweight and centralize it within the gap, and collides with the stopper when its amplitude exceeds the specified gap width. The stopper is covered by a shock‐absorbing rubber made of polyurethane gel. The installed BID was evaluated in a single degree‐of‐freedom model of a floor slab subjected to vertical excitations. Simulations revealed that the installed BID properly controls the vibrations. Next, the effects of the BID installed on a steel plate were investigated in shaking table tests. The BID effectively suppressed vertical vibrations of the plate subjected to sinusoidal waves, seismic motions, and walking excitations. Understanding rainfall‐runoff processes is crucial for prevention and prediction of water‐related natural disasters. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a potential tracer, but few researches have applied it for rainfall‐runoff process studies. We observed multiple tracers including SF6 in spring water at 1‐ to 2‐hr intervals during rainstorm events to investigate the effectivity of SF6 tracer in rainfall–runoff studies through the clarification of rainfall–runoff process. The target spring is a perennial spring in a forested headwater catchment with an area of 0.045 km2 in Fukushima, Japan. The relationship between the SF6 concentration in spring water and the spring discharge volume was negative trend; the SF6 concentration in spring water becomes low as the spring discharge volume increases especially during rainstorms. The hydrograph separation using SF6 and chloride ion tracers was applied for determining the contribution of principal sources on rainfall–runoff water. It suggested more than 60% contribution of bedrock groundwater at the rainfall peak and high percentage contribution continued even in the hydrograph recession phase. Based on observed low SF6 concentration in groundwater after heavy rainfall, the replacement of groundwater near the spring with bedrock groundwater is indicated as a mechanism for water discharge with low SF6 concentration during rainfall events. Consequently, rainstorm events play an important role as triggers in discharging water stored in the deeper subsurface area. In addition, SF6 tracer is concluded as one of the strongest tracers for examining rainfall–runoff process studies. And, therefore, this study provided new insights into the dynamics of groundwater and its responses to rainfall in terms of SF6 concentration variance in water in headwater regions.  相似文献

Unzen volcano is situated on Shimabara Peninsula, western Kyushu, Japan. On the flank of the volcano, the Obama, Unzen and Shimabara hot springs are aligned in a direction from the southwest to the northeast across the peak. At Obama and Shimabara, heat is transferred mainly by water flow. But at Unzen heat is transferred by the discharge of natural steam and by conduction as well as water flow. In order to estimate the heat discharge by mechanisms other than water flow, infrared measurements by a helicopter-borne thermocamera were conducted over the Unzen hot spring area. The heat discharge was calculated from the thermal image by a method based on heat balance of the ground surface resulting in a value of 1.9 × 106 cal/s (7.9 MW). The heat discharged by all mechanisms including that by water flow is estimated to be 5.0 × 106 cal/s (21 MW). Similar preliminary estimates have been made for heat discharge at the Obama and Shimabara hot springs giving values of about 1.2 × 107 cal/s (50 MW) and 1.0 × 105 cal/s (0.4 MW), respectively. These values indicate that the heat discharge decreases with distance from the southwest to the northeast direction across the volcano. The total heat discharge from three hot spring areas on Unzen volcano is about 1.7 × 107 cal/s (71 MW).The heat balance method appears useful for quantitative analysis of regional trends but its accuracy may not be always sufficient for detailed surveys. Several methods of determining heat flow, including the heat balance method, were compared at a test field in the Unzen hot spring area. The values obtained by the heat balance method coincide roughly with the other results but more detailed analysis is necessary to improve the accuracy of current methods of geothermal measurements.  相似文献

The writers have been studying the origin of porosity in the Neogene calcareous rocks of Akita, Japan, and in the Mississippian Windsor Group carbonate rocks of Nova Scotia, Canada. The former consist mainly of dolomitic clayey-siliceous marls, derived mainly from opaline skeletal debris of microscopic organisms. These marls were deposited in bathyal to inner-neritic environments. The carbonate rocks of Windsor Group, which include both dolostones and limestones, originated from biogenic carbonate debris and were deposited in inner-shelf to shoal environments.  相似文献
