Uptake of atmospheric CO2 during sample collection and analysis, and consequent lowering of estimated ages, has rarely been considered in radiocarbon dating of groundwater. Using field and laboratory experiments, we show that atmospheric CO2 can be easily and rapidly absorbed in hyperalkaline solutions used for the extraction of dissolved inorganic carbon, resulting in elevated 14C measurements. Kinetic isotope fractionation during atmospheric CO2 uptake may also result in decrease of δ13C, leading to insufficient corrections for addition of dead carbon by geochemical processes. Consequently, measured 14C values of groundwater should not be used for age estimation without corresponding δ13C values, and historical 14C data in the range of 1 to 10% modern Carbon should be re‐evaluated to ensure that samples with atmospheric contamination are recognized appropriately. We recommend that samples for 14C analysis should be collected and processed in the field and the laboratory without exposure to the atmosphere. These precautions are considered necessary even if 14C measurements are made with an accelerator mass spectrometer. 相似文献

Starspots are created by local magnetic fields on the surfaces of stars, just as sunspots. Their fields are strong enough
to suppress the overturning convective motion and thus block or redirect the flow of energy from the stellar interior outwards
to the surface and consequently appear as locally cool and therefore dark regions against an otherwise bright photosphere
(Biermann in Astronomische Nachrichten 264:361, 1938; Z Astrophysik 25:135, 1948). As such, starspots are observable tracers
of the yet unknown internal dynamo activity and allow a glimpse into the complex internal stellar magnetic field structure.
Starspots also enable the precise measurement of stellar rotation which is among the key ingredients for the expected internal
magnetic topology. But whether starspots are just blown-up sunspot analogs, we do not know yet. This article is an attempt
to review our current knowledge of starspots. A comparison of a white-light image of the Sun (G2V, 5 Gyr) with a Doppler image
of a young solar-like star (EK Draconis; G1.5V, age 100 Myr, rotation 10 × Ω
Sun) and with a mean-field dynamo simulation suggests that starspots can be of significantly different appearance and cannot
be explained with a scaling of the solar model, even for a star of same mass and effective temperature. Starspots, their surface
location and migration pattern, and their link with the stellar dynamo and its internal energy transport, may have far reaching
impact also for our understanding of low-mass stellar evolution and formation. Emphasis is given in this review to their importance
as activity tracers in particular in the light of more and more precise exoplanet detections around solar-like, and therefore

Soil moisture variability is analysed in the re-analysis data ERA-40 of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) which includes four layers within 189 cm depth. Short-term correlations are characterised by an e-folding time scale assuming an exponential decay, whilst long-term memory is described by power law decays with exponents determined by detrended fluctuation analysis. On a global scale, the short-term variability varies congruently with long-term memory in the surface layer. Key climatic regions (Europe, Amazon and Sahara) reveal that soil moisture time series are non-stationary in arid regions and in deep layers within the time horizon of ERA-40. The physical processes leading to soil moisture variability are linear according to an analysis of volatility (the absolute differences), which is substantiated by surrogate data analysis preserving the long-term memory. 相似文献

We analyze the ability of an oceanic monitoring array to detect potential changes in the North Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC). The observing array is ‘deployed’ into a numerical model (ECHAM5/MPI-OM), and simulates the measurements of density and wind stress at 26°N in the Atlantic. The simulated array mimics the continuous monitoring system deployed in the framework of the UK Rapid Climate Change program. We analyze a set of three realizations of a climate change scenario (IPCC A1B), in which – within the considered time-horizon of 200 years – the MOC weakens, but does not collapse. For the detection analysis, we assume that the natural variability of the MOC is known from an independent source, the control run. Our detection approach accounts for the effects of observation errors, infrequent observations, autocorrelated internal variability, and uncertainty in the initial conditions. Continuous observation with the simulated array for approximately 60 years yields a statistically significant (p < 0.05) detection with 95 percent reliability assuming a random observation error of 1 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3 s?1). Observing continuously with an observation error of 3 Sv yields a detection time of about 90 years (with 95 percent reliability). Repeated hydrographic transects every 5 years/ 20 years result in a detection time of about 90 years/120 years, with 95 percent reliability and an assumed observation error of 3 Sv. An observation error of 3 Sv (one standard deviation) is a plausible estimate of the observation error associated with the RAPID UK 26°N array. 相似文献

We sampled living and subfossil phantom midge (Diptera: Chaoboridae) larvae from surface sediments of 21 small lakes in Southern
Sweden to examine the influence of fish and selected abiotic variables on the abundance and species composition of chaoborid
assemblages. We expected total Chaoborus abundance to be inversely correlated with fish abundance and Chaoborus species most sensitive to fish predation to be found only in fishless lakes. We aimed to use the observed relationships to
develop models to reconstruct past fish abundances from chaoborid remains and the abiotic environment. C. flavicans occurred in almost every lake, whereas subfossil C. obscuripes were found in the surface sediments of only one fishless lake. The density of living C. flavicans larvae correlated negatively with fish abundance, lake order and size. The concentration of C. flavicans subfossils was negatively associated with pH, lake size, water transparency and fish abundance. Regression models that included
lake morphometry and landscape position as additional predictors of fish abundance performed better than models that used
only Chaoborus predictors. The explained variance in fish abundance varied from 52 to 86%. Leave-one-out cross-validation indicated moderate
performance of the two best models. These models explained 51 and 56% of the observed untransformed fish density and biomass,
respectively. In addition, all Chaoborus models were unbiased in closely following the 1:1 reference line in plots of observed versus predicted values. These results
are a promising step in developing midge-based paleolimnological reconstructions of past fish abundance, and the approach
might be improved by including chironomid remains in the models. 相似文献

This paper discusses the effects of vegetation cover and soil parameters on the climate change projections of a regional climate
model over the Arctic domain. Different setups of the land surface model of the regional climate model HIRHAM were realized
to analyze differences in the atmospheric circulation caused by (1) the incorporation of freezing/thawing of soil moisture,
(2) the consideration of top organic soil horizons typical for the Arctic and (3) a vegetation shift due to a changing climate.
The largest direct thermal effect in 2 m air temperature was found for the vegetation shift, which ranged between −1.5 K and
3 K. The inclusion of a freeze/thaw scheme for soil moisture shows equally large sensitivities in spring over cool areas with
high soil moisture content. Although the sensitivity signal in 2 m air temperature for the experiments differs in amplitude,
all experiments show changes in mean sea level pressure (mslp) and geopotential height (z) throughout the troposphere of similar
magnitude (mslp: −2 hPa to 1.5 hPa, z: −15 gpm to 5 gpm). This points to the importance of dynamical feedbacks within the
atmosphere-land system. Land and soil processes have a distinct remote influence on large scale atmospheric circulation patterns
in addition to their direct, regional effects. The assessment of induced uncertainties due to the changed implementations
of land surface processes discussed in this study demonstrates the need to take all those processes for future Arctic climate
projections into account, and demonstrates a clear need to include similar implementations in regional and global climate

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is the source of many Asian river systems and serves as “the Asian water tower”. Precipitation variability is a strong component of both hydrological processes and energy cycles, and the study of precipitation in the TP is of great importance in the content of global warming. In this study, the annual and seasonal (spring: MAM; summer: JJA; autumn: SON; and winter: DJF) variations in precipitation are investigated in the eastern and central TP during 1961–2007, based on surface raw and adjusted observations as well as both NCEP/NCAR (1961–2007) and ERA-40 (1961–2001) reanalyses. The adjusted precipitation in the TP is higher than raw values on both the annual and seasonal basis due to adjustments of solid precipitation by a bias experiential model. At the annual spring and winter scales, the adjusted precipitation shows a significant increase calculated by the Mann–Kendall trend test. Compared with adjusted precipitation; both NCEP/NCAR and ERA-40 reanalyses capture the broad spatial distributions of mean annual and seasonal precipitation, but are less good at repeating the decadal variability. Both reanalyses show the drying phenomena in most regions and fail to represent the change patterns of precipitation observed by the adjusted observations. Both NCEP/NCAR and ERA-40 have larger inconsistencies which may be caused by the differences between actual and model topography. This suggests that it is crucial to use the adjusted precipitation in the climate research and reanalysis products should be paid more attention in the TP. 相似文献

Irradiation techniques are often applied to gem minerals for color enhancement purposes. Natural green, blue and colorless
specimens of rare gemological quality euclase, BeAlSiO4(OH), from Brazil were irradiated with gamma rays in the dose range from 10 to 500 kGy. Although the colors of the different
specimens were not strongly influenced, two different irradiation-induced paramagnetic defect centers were found by electron
paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The first one is an O− hole center interacting with one Al neighbor and the second is a Ti3+ electron center. The EPR angular rotation patterns of both irradiation-induced defects were measured and analyzed. The results
suggest that O− hole centers are formed by dissociation of the hydroxyl ions, similar as in topaz crystals. In euclase the OH− ions interconnect distorted Al octahedra and Be tetrahedra in O5 positions. During irradiation, the electrons are captured by titanium ions (Ti4+ + e−), leading to the formation of paramagnetic Ti3+ ions. From the EPR rotation patterns it is clear that these ions substitute for Al ions. The spin Hamiltonian parameters
of the irradiation-induced defects are analyzed and compared to similar defect centers in other mineral specimens. Thermal
annealing experiments show that the O− hole centers and Ti3+ electron centers are directly connected through the radiation process. 相似文献
