The Denali fault system forms an arc, convex to the north, across southern Alaska. In the central Alaska Range, the system consists of a northern Hines Creek strand and a southern McKinley strand, up to 30 km apart. The Hines Creek fault may preserve a record of the early history of the fault system. Strong contrasts between juxtaposed lower Paleozoic rocks appear to require large dextral strike-slip or a combination of dipslip and strike-slip displacements along this fault. Thus the fault system may mark a reactivated suture zone between continental rocks to the north and a late Paleozoic island arc to the south, as suggested by Richter and Jones (1973). Major movements on the Hines Creek fault ceased by the Late Cretaceous, but local dip-slip movements continued into the Cenozoic.The McKinley fault is an active dextral strike-slip fault with a mean Holocene displacement rate of 1–2 cm/y. Post-Late Cretaceous dextral offset on this fault is probably at least 30 km and possibly as great as 400 km. Patterns of early Tertiary folding and reverse faulting indicate that the McKinley fault was active at that time and suggest that this fault developed shortly after strike-slip activity ceased on the Hines Creek fault. Oligocene — middle Miocene tectonic stability and late Miocene—Pliocene uplift of crustal blocks may reflect periods of quiescence and activity, on the McKinley fault.The two strands of the Denali fault divide the central Alaska Range into northern, central, and southern terranes. During the Paleozoic—Mesozoic there is evidence for at least two episodes of compressive deformation in the northern terrane, four in the central terrane, and two in the southern. During each, the axis of maximum compressive strain was subhorizontal and about north—south. This pattern suggests a Paleozoic and Mesozoic setting dominated by plate convergence, despite the possible large pre-Late Cretaceous lateral movement on the Hines Creek fault.The Cenozoic pattern of faulting and folding appears compatible with a plate tectonic model of (1) rapid northward movement of the Pacific plate relative to Alaska during the early Tertiary; (2) slow northwestward movement of the Pacific plate during the Oligicene and (3) rapid northwestward movement of the Pacific plate from the end of the Oligocene to the present.  相似文献

Due to the potentially accumulative nature of the Fladen Ground, an area of intense oil activity in the North Sea, a survey was carried out in 1989 to map the distribution of contamination in relation to these oil activities. All the sediments collected were screened by ultraviolet fluorescence (UVF) for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and selected samples were analysed for n-alkanes (by GC-FID), PAHs and biomarkers (by GC-MSD). This survey was repeated in 2001, with all the 1989 sites being resampled. All of these sediments were analysed for UVF oil equivalents, PAHs, n-alkanes and biomarkers. The concentrations of these parameters decreased between 1989 and 2001, with average decreases ranging from 43% to 88%. In addition, no significant difference was found, for all the parameters, between near field (<5 km from an oil installation) and far field (>5 km from an oil installation) sites in 2001 indicating that the Fladen Ground is approaching a 'steady state' or background concentration for contamination.  相似文献

Levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) were at least seven-fold higher in mussels sampled from a polluted site (Loch Leven, in Scotland, UK) compared to a nearby clean reference site (Loch Etive) throughout the year 2000. Levels of DNA strand breaks (alkaline COMET assay) using both gill and digestive gland nuclei were similar at both sites despite the difference in contaminant load (total PAH). In contrast, mussels collected from a reference site (Port Quin, Cornwall, UK) had an increase in DNA strand breaks in digestive gland cells following laboratory exposure to B[a]P-dosed Isochrysis galbana. However, after 14 days high dose (20 ppb-exposed diet) animals had returned to levels similar to the controls. There was no evidence of increased necrosis or apoptosis after treatments. The results from these two studies suggest that an adaptive response may prevent ongoing DNA damage in mussels exposed to high levels of B[a]P and PAH contamination.  相似文献

Particle mixing rates (DB) calculated from excess 210Pb gradients in sediments of the east equatorial Pacific range from 0.04 to 0.5 cm2/y, with variation of a factor of 3–4 at a single site. Diffusion of the 236Ra daughter 222Rn may affect 210Pb distributions under conditions of slow mixing and low 210Pb flux to the seafloor, as shown by a siliceous ooze-clay core which contained the fallout radionuclides 239,240Pu and 137Cs but no excess 210Pb (relative to 226Ra). There is no clear relationship between 210Pbderived mixing rates and sediment type, accumulation rate or organic carbon flux to the sediments. Comparison of 210Pb mixing rates with those calculated from 239,240Pu and 137Cs distributions reveals better agreement for a pulse input of the fallout radionuclides (DB = 0.03?0.4 cm2/y) than for continuous input at a constant rate (DB = 0.1?1.6 cm2/y), although the Pu and 137Cs data are better fit by the latter model. The agreement may be fortuitous because 239,240Pu and 137Cs appear significantly deeper than 210Pb in at least one core. Tracer separation could be caused by particle size-selective mixing by the benthic fauna or by chemical mobilization. If the fallout radionuclides are scavenged from surface waters by large, organic-rich particles such as fecal pellets, their release and migration may result from decomposition of the carrier in surface sediments. Either a relatively unreactive form of Pu (e.g. oxidized Pu) has been released by this process or a one-dimensional model is inadequate to explain its observed penetration into the sediments. Activity ratios of 239,240Pu137Cs in the sediments decrease with increasing north latitude, and the trend reflects higher fluxes of 239,240Pu near the weapons test site at Christmas Island (2°N). The 239,240Pu137Cs ratios and fluxes to the sediment (assuming constant input) at the siliceous ooze-red clay site are consistent with published sediment trap data from a nearby site. Thus if fallout radionuclide fluxes to the sea floor were higher in the past, both 239,240Pu and 137Cs have been released from sinking particles.  相似文献

Observations of the first large-scale patterns of magnetic fields near the sunspot minimum of 1986 (the start of cycle 22) are presented using synoptic magnetic data provided by the National Solar Observatory and contour maps constructed from data provided by the Mount Wilson Solar Observatory. The latter are compared with simulated contour maps derived from numerical solutions of the flux transport equation using data from particular Carrington rotations as initial conditions.The simulated evolutions of the large-scale magnetic fields are qualitatively consistent with observed evolutions, but differ in several significant respects. Some of the differences can be removed by varying the diffusivity and the parameters of the large-scale velocity fields. The remaining differences include: (i) the complexity of fine structure, (ii) the response to differential rotation, (iii) the evolution of decaying active regions, and (iv) the emergence of new elements in the weak, large-scale fields independent of the evolution of the observed active regions.It is concluded that the patterns of weak magnetic fields which comprise the large-scale features cannot be formed entirely by the diffusive decay of active regions. There must be a significant contribution to these patterns by non-random flux eruptions within the network structure, independent of active regions.  相似文献

Particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations measured in bottles are often higher than those measured by in situ pumps when samples are taken concurrently. In previous work, we suggested that differential collection of zooplankton might explain this systematic discrepancy in POC between these small volume (bottle) and large volume (in situ pump) techniques. We have now further quantified the carbon contributed by zooplankton collected in the >70-μm particulate fractions from both bottles and pumps at sites in the Mediterranean Sea and Long Island Sound. Our results show that zooplankton abundance and lipid concentrations from zooplankton are one order of magnitude higher in the bottles than in the pumps, supporting the idea that part of the pump–bottle difference is due to collection of more zooplankton by the bottles. Particle washout off the 70-μm mesh used in the in situ pump may cause loss of some particles as well. However, zooplankton in the >70-μm fraction from the bottles contributed only about 1–2 μM POC, which cannot explain the up to 20 μM POC differences observed in this study. Thus, the mechanisms leading to such a large POC difference are still unclear and need to be further investigated. POC concentrations measured using microquartz filters were similar to those using glass fiber filters, suggesting that filter types cannot explain the higher POC observed in bottles, where glass fiber filters are normally used. Furthermore, we investigated several different pump inlet designs to determine how these might affect the ability of pumps to collect and retain large (>70 μm) particles, including zooplankton. The comparison among different pump inlets suggests that inlet design affects the efficiency and retention of large particles and that a sealed filter holder with a narrow right-angle tubular opening is the most efficient at catching/retaining zooplankton.  相似文献

The use of constructed wetlands to replace natural wetlands has become a widespread management tool. Because of the inherent disturbed nature of these sites, constructed wetlands are susceptible to colonization by undesirable plant species. Vegetated communities in 15 constructed wetland sites ranging in age from 1 to 12 yr and in size from 0.4 to 5.3 ha were surveyed using differential global positioning system (GPS) technology in 1994. These sites were re-surveyed in 2000. Colonization of the sites byPhragmites australis expanded from 73% of the sites in 1994 to 80% of the sites in 2000. The total area colonized byP. australis within the sites increased from 3.47 to 4.96 ha. In some sites, the area ofP. australis decreased, which appears to be correlated with an increase in scrub-shrub vegetation (0.986, p=0.014). Similar to results from the previous study, sites that are surrounded by subtidal perimeter ditches have significantly lessP. australis than those sites without perimeter ditches (p=0.019).P. australis expansion rates within the sites varied from 0.1 to 5.6 yr?1. Colonization of constructed wetland sites byP. australis should be a continued concern of resource managers. Activities such as planting scrub-shrub species on the upland-wetland berm and construction of subtidal perimeter ditches should be considered as methods to reduce the probability of invasion.  相似文献
