Sand lenses at various spatial scales are recognized to add heterogeneity to glacial sediments. They have high hydraulic conductivities relative to the surrounding till matrix and may affect the advective transport of water and contaminants in clayey till settings. Sand lenses were investigated on till outcrops producing binary images of geological cross‐sections capturing the size, shape and distribution of individual features. Sand lenses occur as elongated, anisotropic geobodies that vary in size and extent. Besides, sand lenses show strong non‐stationary patterns on section images that hamper subsequent simulation. Transition probability (TP) and multiple‐point statistics (MPS) were employed to simulate sand lens heterogeneity. We used one cross‐section to parameterize the spatial correlation and a second, parallel section as a reference: it allowed testing the quality of the simulations as a function of the amount of conditioning data under realistic conditions. The performance of the simulations was evaluated on the faithful reproduction of the specific geological structure caused by sand lenses. Multiple‐point statistics offer a better reproduction of sand lens geometry. However, two‐dimensional training images acquired by outcrop mapping are of limited use to generate three‐dimensional realizations with MPS. One can use a technique that consists in splitting the 3D domain into a set of slices in various directions that are sequentially simulated and reassembled into a 3D block. The identification of flow paths through a network of elongated sand lenses and the impact on the equivalent permeability in tills are essential to perform solute transport modeling in the low‐permeability sediments.  相似文献

Summary The experimental site of the Department of Meteorology of Freiburg University at the Hartheim pine stand is first described. There, since 1973 long term measurements of net radiation and its components have been carried out. In addition we have been monitoring the different heat fluxes and components of the forest water budget.From May 11th to May 24th 1992 a special international and interdisciplinary observation period was organized in Hartheim (HartX 92). This took place in the frame of the international regional climatic project REKLIP (Regionales Klima Projekt). We then describe the permanent equipment and the special HartX installations. After that we show the climate of the region, in May 1992 and the weather during the HartX period. It was extraordinarily warm and the precipitation was much less than normal. The cloud cover was very small.We report the results of the radiation measurements (net radiation and its components). They are compared to the long standing measurements (1974–1988). Moreover the longstanding data of the components of the water budget (throughfall, canopy drip and stemflow, interception and transpiration) of the period 1978–1985 are dealt with. In addition we report the behaviour of the energy fluxes (soil-stand heat flux, turbulent sensible and latent heat fluxes) of the period 1974–1988. Research examining the relationship between trust, public engagement, and natural resource management asserts that trust fosters positive behavior and enhanced cooperation. Yet some scholars are finding that certain kinds of distrust are helpful in achieving democratic outcomes by providing would-be participants with the motivation to engage in issues of public concern. This article seeks to clarify this apparent disjuncture in the trust literature by examining the multidimensional nature of trust as it relates to public engagement on energy-related issues in Canada. Based on a national online survey (n?=?3000) we use a binary probit model to explore the connections between trust, knowledge, and public engagement. About 70% of respondents had participated in at least one form of public engagement over the last 3 years. Drawing on a two-dimensional conception of trust, we find that general trust on its own is not positively linked to public engagement. A combination of general trust and skepticism, however, is positively associated with public engagement and confirms our hypothesis that at least some concern regarding credibility, bias, and vested interest can motivate public engagement. In this sense, trust is not uniformly good for public engagement. These results signal a need to further refine our assumptions about the relationship between public trust, public engagement and environmental governance.  相似文献

Summary This paper describes measurements of the Hartheim forest energy budget for the 157-day period of May 11 – Oct. 14, 1992. Data were collected as 30-min means. Energy available to the forest was measured with net radiometers and soil heat flux discs; sensible heat exchange between the canopy and atmosphere was measured with two One-Propeller Eddy Correlation (OPEC) systems, and latent energy (evapotranspiration orET) was determined as a residual in the surface energy balance equation. Net rediation, change in thermal storage, and sensible heat flux were verified by independent measurements during the Hartheim Experiment (HartX, May 11–12), and again during the HartX2 experiment over 20 days late in the summer (Sep. 10–29). Specifically, sensible heat estimates from the two adjacent OPEC sensor sets were in close agreement throughout the summer, and in excellent agreement with measurements of sonic eddy correlation systems in May and September. The eddy correlation/energy balance technique was observed to overestimate occurrence of dew, leading to an underestimate of dailyET of about 5%. After taking dew into account, estimates of OPECET totaled 358 mm over the 5.1-month period, which is in quite good agreement with an ET estimate of 328 mm from a hydrologic water balance. An observed decrease in forestET in July and August was clearly associated with low rainfall and increased soil water deficit. The OPEC system required only modest technical supervision, and generated a data yield of 99.5% over the period DOY 144–288. The documented verification and precision of this energy budget appears to be unmatched by any other long-term forest study reported to date.With 9 Figures  相似文献

Condensed water in a vertical column is related through continuity equations to the updraft speed, column depth, height of the condensation level, and strength of microphysical processes. When the ratio of updraft to characteristic particle fall speed is small, as in stratiform rain, the mass of precipitation in the steady state is proportional to the product of that ratio, column depth, and condensation function. When the ratio is only slightly above unity, two water content regimes are defined by continuity equations. The regime of large water content, an extension of the case described above, occurs when the condensation level is low and when there is rapid conversion of cloud to precipitation. Another regime characterized by a water mass about one-third as large (or less), and absence of precipitation at the ground beneath the updraft column, appears if the condensation level is high enough or cloud conversion slow enough. When the ratio is large, the total water content is usually much smaller than when updrafts and fall speeds are similar, and declines slowly toward a limiting value with increasing ratio. As updrafts intensify, precipitation is more limited near the top of the column, with increasing depth and amount of cloud beneath. In the limit of very fast updraft and weak cloud conversion process, the condensate profile is simply the profile of cloud in air risen from the condensation level without conversion of cloud to precipitation. These findings contrast substantially with those presented by Sulakvelidze,et al., who proposed that the water mass associated with strong updrafts increases with the square of the updraft speed. Summary Chemical investigations of 192 hand-picked iron-oxide concentrates from banded iron-formation of the Iron Quadrangle, Brazil, did not yield any significant difference in minor and trace-element contents between itabirite and iron-ore samples (Fe >63%). Mean values (171–177 samples) are: Ca 82 ± 12 ppm; Co 120 ± 8; Cr 77 ± 8; Cu 40 ± 2; Mg 40±5; Mn 170±L28; Ni 167±7; P 905±23; Ti 114±13; V 138±8; Al 1068 ± 174 ppm (52 samples) and Au 33 ± 8 ppb (50 samples). Microprobe results indicate different trends of Fe-substitution by minor elements depending on the different lattice types of magnetite and hematite. Mg and Mn are much more concentrated in magnetite than in hematite whereas hematite is distinctly enriched in titanium due to the isostructural nature of the hematite and ilmenite lattices.
Zusammenfassung Chemische Analysen von 192, unter dem Binokular ausgelesener Eisenoxidkonzentrate von Proben aus den Eisenerzlagerstätten des Eisernen Vierecks in Brasilien, ergaben keinerlei Unterschiede in den Neben- und Spurenelementgehalten zwischen den Itabiriten und den Reicherzen (Fe >63%). Die Mittelwerte von jeweils 171–177 Elementbestimmungen ind folgende: Ca 82± 12 ppm; Co 120± 8; Cr 77± 8; Cu 40± 2; g 40±5; Mn 170±28; Ni 167±7, P 905±23; Ti 114:L13; V 138±8, Al 1068 ± 174 ppm (52 Proben) und Au 33 ± 8 ppb (50 Proben).Aus Mikrosondenuntersuchungen ergeben sich in Abhängigkeit von den unterschiedlichen Kristallgittertypen des Magnetits und Hämatits verschiedene Substitutionsraten des Eisens durch Nebenelemente. So zeigen Mg und Mn in Magnetiten um eine Vielfaches höhere Werte als in Hämatiten, während Ti im Hämatit wegen der Isotypie des Hämatit-Ilmenit-Gitters deutlich angereichert ist.

UV-B tolerance and susceptibility of high Arctic morphotypes of the Daphnia pulexl D. tenebrosa complex were assessed by in situ experiments at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard (79°N). Animals from local ponds were exposed to ambient light plus additional UV-B from lamps in a greenhouse facility. Taxonomic affinities did not appear as major determinants of UV susceptibility, but a major difference in UV-B tolerance was seen between morphotypes with pigmented carapaces and those without, the latter being far more susceptible. Assays on levels of carotene and the anti-oxidant enzymes catalase and superoxide dismutase did not reveal clear-cut differences between populations, and could not account for the higher tolerance in pigmented populations. Levels of glutathione transferase were higher in the transparent population, however. In the absence of blue light and UV, laboratory reared animals did not reconstitute their carapace melanization after moulting, indicating that short-wave light is the cue for melanin synthesis. Tests on melanized individuals and individuals of the same population reared indoors through 1-2 moults supported the major role of melanin for UV protection. Periods with high UV exposure during hatching of ephippia could induce shifts in morphotype or clonal dominance.  相似文献

Many regions in the world are affected by land degradation. Successive development projects have promoted a variety of soil and water conservation (SWC) measures to prevent further land degradation. However, these measures have seldom been adopted on a large scale. This paper deals with the adoption process of investments in SWC measures, and with the factors influencing adoption and continued use of these measures. After a theoretical introduction, whereby three phases in the adoption process are distinguished, it presents and compares some results of independent empirical research projects on adoption of SWC measures in five developing countries. Some general conclusions are drawn from these diverse research results.  相似文献
