There are many different water harvesting systems in the Middle East and the operation of one type, the mahafir, was investigated in the Badia Region of Jordan. Mahafir are crescent and rectangular shaped excavations dug into the playa surface, now filled with sediment. Their previous volumes were estimated through topographical survey of the surrounding earth mounds. The average depth of the mahafir was found to be 3.2 m; storing a total water volume of 111,619 m3 at Maharouta and 55,005 m3 at Anka. The mahafir only occupy 4% of the playa surface and their source of water is primarily direct rainfall onto the playa surface augmented by runoff from adjacent slopes. Taking annual rainfalls as an input from 1963 to 1992 and even assuming rainfall harvesting is only 10% effective it appears that the full water storage potential of the mahafir could be met in most years.  相似文献

It is shown that Birch's formula for the isothermal pressure derivative of the isothermal bulk modulus, K′, can be used to generate reasonable values of K0 for a sequence of silicates with various ambient densities and constant mean atomic mass, m¯. The theory predicts values in fairly good agreement with experimental results, although there is a regrettable spread of experimental values of K0 for each solid. This first-order approximation theory for scaling between K0 and ?0 is analogous to the law of corresponding states which scales K0 and ?0.  相似文献

At moderate temperatures, the elastic properties of natural MgAl2O4 spinel differ in several significant ways from properties of synthetic spinels. Below 1000 K, the ultrasonic resonant frequencies of an ordered natural spinel change significantly after heat treatment; at higher temperatures, both types of spinels have similar resonant responses. The temperature derivatives of the elastic constants of an ordered spinel also differ from those of disordered spinels at moderate temperatures; again, at higher temperatures, both types of spinels have similar behaviors. The Raman spectra also differ below 1000 K for ordered natural and disordered spinels and are similar at higher temperatures and after cooling to ambient temperature. We associate these changes in ultrasonic resonance and Raman spectra of spinel with cation disordering at high temperature which may be quenched by cooling. We deduce estimates of the inversion parameter from the relative intensities of the two A1g Raman modes in very good agreement with estimates made from other measurements. We find thatC 11 andC 12 decrease by 4 and 8%, respectively, with 20% inversion in spinel;C 44 is less sensitive to cation order. These results imply that previous measurements of the adiabatic elastic constants of spinels at ambient conditions have been affected by the state of cation disorder of the specimen.  相似文献

The partitioning of aerosol particles between cloud droplets and interstitial air by number and volume was determined both in terms of an integral value and as a function of size for clouds on Mt. Kleiner Feldberg (825 m asl), in the Taunus Mountains north-west of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Differences in the integral values and the size dependent partitioning between two periods during the campaign were observed. Higher number and volume concentrations of aerosol particles in the accumulation mode were observed during Period II compared to Period I. In Period I on average 87±11% (±one standard deviation) and 73±7% of the accumulation mode volume and number were incorporated into cloud droplets. For Period II the corresponding fractions were 42±6% and 12±2% in one cloud event and 64±4% and 18±2% in another cloud event. The size dependent partitioning as a function of time was studied in Period II and found to have little variation. The major processes influencing the partitioning were found to be nucleation scavenging and entrainment.  相似文献

The Hillgrove mineral field, in the southern part of the New England Orogen of northeastern New South Wales, Australia, contains numerous mesothermal Au---Sb vein systems. Calc-alkaline (shoshonitic) lamprophyre (CAL) dykes are also associated with mineralisation with dilational lode structures acting as conduits for dyke intrusion, which has occurred before and after major quartz-stibnite veining. Dykes include minette and vogesite compositions and were emplaced in the late Permian (247–255 Ma), at the same time as regionally extensive I-type magmatism in the New England Orogen. Least-altered dykes are enriched in Mg, K, Ba, Rb, Sr, Zr, Th, Cr and Ni relative to I-type intrusives although chemical affinities are evident between lamprophyres and the more mafic members of the high-K Moonbi Plutonic Suite.

Hillgrove lamprophyres are commonly enriched in Sb, As, Hg, Au, W and Bi with respect to average CAL compositions. Evidence indicates this is most likely due to contamination of magma during intrusion through mineralised structures, rather than a primary magmatic feature. Partially resorbed xenocrystic stibnite occurs in dykes which have intruded lode structures, probably facilitated by the low melting point of stibnite (550°C) and its incorporation into the magma. Carbon and oxygen isotopic data from carbonates in least-altered, post-lode lamprophyres are indistinguishable from carbonate in altered dykes and veins, implying that hydrothermal interaction continued after dyke intrusion. Although it is unlikely that lamprophyre dykes have been a direct source for mineralisation at Hillgrove, the close temporal and spatial relation of dykes, mesothermal Au---Sb veins and I-type intrusions are interpreted to be manifestations of the post-collisional setting and influx of mantle-derived heat and partial melts into the New England Orogen during the late Permian.  相似文献

Surface-exposure dating (SED) methods typically rely on the measurement of a geochemical parameter that systematically changes with time. A pivotal task in the calibration of many of these techniques is to demonstrate that lava flow surfaces sampled for dating have not experienced erosion. Although criteria for identification of constructional basaltic lava flow surfaces have been published, no such criteria presently exist for the recognition of constructional silicic flows. Here we present several criteria for identifying constructional silicic lava flow features in the field. First, crease structures are fractures with easily identified, curved, striated walls that are commonly observed on recent and active silicic lava flows. Crease structures form during extrusion, and are resistant to mechanical disintegration because they expose dense material from the flow interior. Second, some crease structures break apart during formation, leaving a deposit of striated blocks on the flow surface. Crease structure blocks are striated on only one side, whereas blocks from internal columnar joints exposed through erosion are striated on two or more sides. Only the striated side of the crease structure block is definitively constructional. Finally, many silicic flow surfaces exhibit expanded or breadcrusted textures. These features consist of a dense, fractured rind, 1 –2cm thick, enclosing highly vesicular material. Breadcrust flow textures appear similar to breadcrust bombs produced during volcanic explosions, so it is imperative to demonstrate that they are part of the lava flow surface. These criteria should enable investigators to positively identify constructional silicic lava flow surfaces when calibrating an SED method.  相似文献
