Seagrass beds occur in various morphological forms, ranging from small patches to continuous meadows. The endemic Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica forms dense and extensive stands that occur in several different morphotypes, including reticulate (seagrass interspersed with a different habitat type, such as bare sand) and continuous beds. This study, undertaken in the Maltese Islands, examined whether reticulate and continuous P. oceanica beds, located adjacent to each other and at similar depths, had different within-bed architectural characteristics. Five commonly used architectural measures (shoot density, number of leaves per shoot, mean leaf length, mean leaf width and shoot biomass) were measured from P. oceanica shoots collected from the two bed types at three different spatial scales: (1) tens of metres (‘small’ scale); (2) hundreds of metres (‘medium’ scale); and (3) kilometres (‘large’ scale). Results of 2-factor ANOVA (factor 1=bed type; factor 2=sampling locality) carried out at the three spatial scales indicated significant differences between the two bed types in shoot density (P<0.01) and leaf length (P<0.05) at the small scale, and in leaf number (P<0.05) at the large scale. Significant interactions were also apparent for shoot density (at the large scale) and for shoot biomass (at the medium scale). However, the results obtained did not indicate consistent architectural differences between the two P. oceanica bed types over the spatial scales considered. Spatial variations in within-bed architectural characteristics observed were therefore thought to be attributable mainly to the influence of local environmental factors. In situ consumption of oxygen is balanced by ventilation if the observed distribution of dissolved oxygen below the euphotic zone is in steady state. Apparent oxygen utilization rates (AOURs) can be estimated from the observed oxygen distribution if the waters of the upper layers can be dated. It has been shown previously that tritium/3 He ages can be used, together with observed oxygen concentrations, to estimate AOURs for waters with ages of several months to several decades. This method is applied to data obtained from the Nansen Basin, Arctic Ocean, during the 1987 cruise of F.S. Polarstern. New production is estimated by depth integration of AOURs calculated for several isopycnals to be 19±5 g C m−2 year−1 for the southern part and 3±2 g C m−2 year−1 for the northern part of the Nansen Basin section. Phytotoxicities of the herbicides, atrazine and linuron, were evaluated for two species of submersed vascular plants (Potamogeton perfoliatus, L. Myriophyllum spicatum, L.) which, until the late 1960s, had been abundant in Chesapeake Bay. Plants were grown in 50-liter laboratory microcosms, containing filtered estuarine water and sediments for a period of 5 weeks and then treated with atrazine or linuron at initial concentrations of 0, 5, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 gmg/liter. Plant responses were measured primarily in terms of apparent O2 production, P3, and above-ground biomass for 4 weeks post treatment. In general, at ≥ 50 gmg/liter there was a significant depression in Pa for both species and herbicides. However, M. spicatum appeared to be less sensitive, with a significant enhancement in Pa of this species at 5 gmg/liter, and linuron was slightly more effective than atrazine at reducing Pa for both species. Treatment effects on biomass generally paralleled those for Pa. In spite of relatively constant atrazine concentrations (84–89 % remaining at termination), both species exhibited evidence of photosynthetic recovery 2–3 weeks after treatment at concentrations ≤ 100 gmg/liter. Using an exponential dose-response model, I50 (concentration for 50 % photosynthetic inhibition), ranged from 45–117 gmg/liter for all experiments. In general, in situ concentrations of atrazine and linuron in Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries appear to be sufficient to result in small reductions in Pa (2–10%, estimated from dose-response model) during a typical growing season. While such effects may be important for the survival of otherwise stressed plant populations, they suggest that these herbicides, per se, were not the cause of the general decline in abundance of these plants. 相似文献

The ECOMAN project was initiated from an awareness of the complexity of the functioning of coastal marine systems and the clear need for more pragmatic environmental assessment techniques linking environmental degradation with its causes. The aim of the project is to develop a suite of easy to use, cost effective and environmentally valid biological responses (biomarkers) to assess the general health of coastal systems, including estuaries. To achieve this aim, various sublethal endpoints are being measured and evaluated from a range of common coastal organisms showing different feeding types (filter feeding, grazing and predation) and habitat requirements (estuary and rocky shore) and at different levels of biological response (cellular, physiological and behavioural). This holistic integrated approach is essential to identify the full impact of chemical contamination on organisms, and enables the sensitivity of organisms to be ranked and key sentinel species for specific habitats to be identified. 相似文献

Quantitative estimates of 1480 years of summer temperatures in northern Fennoscandia have previously been derived from continuous treering records from northern Sweden. Here we show the results of spectral analyses of these data. Only a few peaks in the spectra are consistently significant when the data are analyzed over a number of sub-periods. Relatively timestable peaks are apparent at periods of 2.1, 2.5, 3.1, 3.6, 4.8, 32–33 and for a range between 55–100 years. These results offer no strong evidence for solar-related forcing of summer temperatures in these regions. Our previously published reconstruction was limited in its ability to represent long-timescale temperature change because of the method used to standardize the original tree-ring data. Here we employ an alternative standardization technique which enables us to capture temperature change on longer timescales. Considerable variance is now reconstructed on timescales of several centuries. In comparison with modern normals (1951–70) generally extended periods when cool conditions prevailed, prior to the start of the instrumental record, include 500–700, 790–870, 1110–1150, 1190–1360, 1570–1750 (A.D.) with the most significant cold troughs centred on about 660, 800, 1140, 1580–1620 and 1640. Methods to identify and subsequently seal surface water loss zones in stream channels were tested by the United States Bureau of Mines at Staub Run, a first-order stream near Frostburg, Maryland, that partially overlies abandoned coal mine workings. Conventional stream gauging was conducted to establish discharge patterns before and after stream sealing. Electromagnetic terrain conductivity surveys were performed within the stream channel to identify zones of increased relative water saturation to depths less than 15 m. Zones of increased conductivity were generally found to be associated with areas exhibiting statistically significant (P 0.05) gauged flow losses. Conversely, zones that exhibited declining conductivity delineated areas where between-station flows were not significantly different. Using this information on potential loss zones, an experimental grouting procedure was applied by injecting an expandable polyurethane grout to a depth less than one meter into the alluvial streambed over a 180-m section of the stream channel. Before grouting, the study section exhibited a 24 I/sec flow loss; first-phase grouting reduced this to a 14 I/sec flow loss; with a second-phase grouting the losses were only 3 I/sec. 相似文献

The chemistry and mineralogy of much of the Late Eocene Blanche Point Formation of South Australia show that biogenic and volcanogenic products were the only significant contributor to the sedimentary record. Intermittent volcanic activity followed by dissolution of the resultant silicic ash and small scale migration of silicon with reprecipitation as the oxide, provides the simplest and most likely explanation for the repetitive nature of the silicification. Seemingly, this was controlled by local silica concentrations which in turn were apparently controlled by the biota. Changes in circulation patterns and/or water depth may have initiated the environmental variations recorded in the formation. 相似文献

Vertical surface water–groundwater exchange processes within a headwater floodplain induced by experimental floods

Restoring hydrologic connectivity between channels and floodplains is common practice in stream and river restoration. Floodplain hydrology and hydrogeology impact stream hydraulics, ecology, biogeochemical processing, and pollutant removal, yet rigorous field evaluations of surface water–groundwater exchange within floodplains during overbank floods are rare. We conducted five sets of experimental floods to mimic floodplain reconnection by pumping stream water onto an existing floodplain swale. Floods were conducted throughout the year to capture seasonal variation and each involved two replicate floods on successive days to test the effect of varying antecedent moisture. Water levels and specific conductance were measured in surface water, soil, and groundwater within the floodplain, along with surface flow into and out of the floodplain. Vegetation density varied seasonally and controlled the volume of surface water storage on the floodplain. By contrast, antecedent moisture conditions controlled storage of water in floodplain soils, with drier antecedent moisture conditions leading to increased subsurface storage and slower flood wave propagation across the floodplain surface. The site experienced spatial heterogeneity in vertical connectivity between surface water and groundwater across the floodplain surface, where propagation of hydrostatic pressure, preferential flow, and bulk Darcy flow were all mechanisms that may have occurred during the five floods. Vertical connectivity also increased with time, suggesting higher frequency of floodplain inundation may increase surface water–groundwater exchange across the floodplain surface. Understanding the variability of floodplain impacts on water quality noted in the literature likely requires better accounting for seasonal variations in floodplain vegetation and antecedent moisture as well as heterogeneous exchange flow mechanisms.
