The relationship between form drag and the zonal mean velocity of steady states is investigated in a very simple system; a barotropic quasi-geostrophic β channel with sinusoidal topography. When a steady solution is calculated by the modified Marquardt method, keeping the zonal mean velocity constant as a parameter, the characteristic of the solution changes at a phase speed of a wave with a wavenumber higher than that of the bottom topography. For velocities smaller than this critical value, there exists a stable quasi-linear solution similar to the linear solution. For larger velocities, there exist three solutions whose form drag is very large. In addition, the resonant velocity of the mode, whose wavenumber is the same as the bottom topography, has no effect on these solutions. When the quiescent fluid is accelerated by a constant wind stress, acceleration stops around the critical velocity for a wide range of the wind stress. If the wind stress is too large for the acceleration to stop, the zonal current speed continues to increase infinitely. It is implied that the zonal velocity of equilibrium is mainly determined, not by the wind stress, but by the amplitude of the bottom topography and the viscosity coefficient. 相似文献

Tidal current structures at the Hayatomono-Seto of the Kanmon Strait are mapped continuously during March 17 to 20, 2003, including a spring tide, by the eight coastal acoustic tomography (CAT) systems distributed on both the sides of the strait. Detailed structures of strong tidal currents and their associated vortices are well reconstructed by the inverse analysis of travel-time difference data obtained from the reciprocal sound transmission between the paired CAT systems located at both sides of the strait mainly. The results are well compared to the shipboard acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data at the correlation rate of 0.84/0.82 and the RMS difference of 0.47/0.48 ms−1 for the east-west/north-south current after the selection of good data. During the observation period, the maximum hourly mean volume transport for the upper 7 m layer across the strait reached 13,314 m3 s−1 for the eastward and 5,547 m3 s−1 for the westward. The daily mean transport is directed to the eastward and estimated 1,470 m3 s−1 and 2,140 m3 s−1 for March 18 and 19, respectively, when a spring tide occurs. 相似文献

Arsenic(III) adsorption reactions are thought to play a critical role in the mobility of arsenic in the environment. It is the nature of the As(III) surface species that must be known on a wide variety of minerals and over a range of pH, ionic strength and surface coverage in order to be able to predict adsorption behavior. EXAFS and XANES spectroscopic studies have identified bidentate, binuclear inner-sphere surface species and/or an outer-sphere species, but only a few oxides have been examined. These results need to be integrated with a predictive surface complexation model in order to ascertain the environmental conditions under which the different surface species may be important on a wide range of solids. In the present study, the surface species information from XAFS and XANES studies has been built into a recent extension of the triple-layer model (ETLM) for the formation of inner-sphere complexes of anions that takes into account the electrostatics of water dipole desorption during ligand exchange reactions. The ETLM has been applied to regress surface titration, proton coadsorption, and As(III) adsorption data over extensive ranges of pH, ionic strength, electrolyte type and surface coverage for magnetite, goethite, gibbsite, amorphous hydrous alumina, hydrous ferric oxide (HFO), ferrihydrite, and amorphous iron oxide. Abstract– Enstatite chondrites (ECs) were subjected to noble gas analyses using stepped crushing and pyrolysis extraction methods. ECs can be classified into subsolar gas‐carrying and subsolar gas‐free ECs based on the 36Ar/84Kr/132Xe ratios. For subsolar gas‐free ECs, elemental ratios, and Xe isotopic compositions indicate that Q gas is the dominant trapped component, the Q gas concentration can be correlated with the petrologic type, reasonably explained by gas release from a common EC parental material during subsequent heating. Atmospheric Xe with sub‐Q elemental ratios is found in Antarctic E3s at 600–800 °C and through crushing. The 132Xe released in these fractions accounts for 30–60% of the bulk concentrations. Hence, the sub‐Q signature is generally due to contamination of elementally fractionated atmosphere. Subsolar gas is mainly released (up to 78% of the bulk 36Ar) at 1300–1600 °C and through crushing, suggesting that enstatite and friable phases are the host phases. Subsolar gas is isotopically identical to solar gas, but elementally fractionated. These observations are consistent with a previous study, which suggested that subsolar gas could be fractionated solar wind having been implanted into chondrule precursors ( Okazaki et al. 2001 ). Unlike subsolar gas‐free ECs, the primordial gas concentrations of subsolar gas‐carrying ECs are not simply correlated with the petrologic type. It is inferred that subsolar gas‐rich chondrules were heterogeneously distributed in the solar nebula and accreted to form subsolar gas‐carrying ECs. Abstract– The interior texture and chemical and noble gas composition of 99 cosmic spherules collected from the meteorite ice field around the Yamato Mountains in Antarctica were investigated. Their textures were used to classify the spherules into six different types reflecting the degree of heating: 13 were cryptocrystalline, 40 were barred olivine, 3 were porphyritic A, 24 were porphyritic B, 9 were porphyritic C, and 10 were partially melted spherules. While a correlation exists between the type of spherule and its noble gas content, there is no significant correlation between its chemical composition and noble gas content. Fifteen of the spherules still had detectable amounts of extraterrestrial He, and the majority of them had 3He/4He ratios that were close to that of solar wind (SW). The Ne isotopic composition of 28 of the spherules clustered between implantation‐fractionated SW and air. Extraterrestrial Ar, confirmed to be present because it had a 40Ar/36Ar ratio lower than that of terrestrial atmosphere, was found in 35 of the spherules. An enigmatic spherule, labeled M240410, had an extremely high concentration of cosmogenic nuclides. Assuming 4π exposure to galactic and solar cosmic rays as a micrometeoroid and no exposure on the parent body, the cosmic‐ray exposure (CRE) age of 393 Myr could be computed using cosmogenic 21Ne. Under these model assumptions, the inferred age suggests that the particle might have been an Edgeworth‐Kuiper Belt object. Alternatively, if exposure near the surface of its parent body was dominant, the CRE age of 382 Myr can be estimated from the cosmogenic 38Ar using the production rate of the 2π exposure geometry, and implies that the particle may have originated in the mature regolith of an asteroid. 相似文献

Existing thermal models of the oceanic lithosphere predict too sharp an increase of heat flow towards the ridge axis. A new mathematical model of a thickening lithosphere is presented. The temperature distribution is computed by the use of observed surface heat flow as a boundary condition. If observed heat flow values represent flow of heat from the mantle, the model predicts a rather rapid growth of the lithosphere within the first 30 m.y. and a nearly steady state after 100 m.y. Heat flow from the asthenosphere to the lithosphere shows a minimum near the ridge axis, suggesting a down-going convective flow in the asthenosphere at both sides of a spreading center. 相似文献

Etching conditions and thermal annealing effects have been studied for fission tracks in four kinds of zircons. The observation of fission tracks under an optical microscope was made with respect to the mean pit length as well as the mean pit density. Apparent rate constants were obtained by substituting the isochronal (60 minutes) annealing data into the ordinary equation of the rate constant. The order of reaction (almost 3rd or 4th) and the activation energy (1.7–2.9 eV) of annealing were determined from the Arrhenius plot of the apparent rate constants. 相似文献

To improve the seismic performance of masonry structures, confined masonry that improves the seismic resistance of masonry structures by the confining effect of surrounding bond beams and tie columns is constructed. This study investigated the earthquake resisting behaviour of confined masonry structures that are being studied and constructed in China. The structural system consists of unreinforced block masonry walls with surrounding reinforced concrete bond beams and tie columns. The characteristics of the structure include: (1) damage to blocks is reduced and brittle failure is avoided by the comparatively lower strength of the joint mortar than that of the blocks, (2) the masonry walls and surrounding reinforced concrete bond beams and tie columns are securely jointed by the shear keys of the tie columns. In this study, wall specimens made of concrete blocks were tested under a cyclic lateral load and simulated by a rigid body spring model that models non‐linear behaviour by rigid bodies and boundary springs. The results of studies outline the resisting mechanism, indicating that a rigid body spring model is considered appropriate for analysing this type of structure. Alkylbenzenes, molecular markers of sewage, were measured in 34 green mussels collected from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the Philippines together with blue mussels collected from Tokyo Bay, Japan. Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) concentrations in South and South East Asian countries ranged from 10 to 1640 ng-∑LAB/g-dry tissue. In some populous cities, LAB concentrations were similar or higher than those found in northern Tokyo Bay which is heavily impacted by sewage effluents. I/E ratios (a ratio of internal to external isomers of LABs) in the South and South East Asian countries (1–3) were much lower than those in Tokyo Bay (3–8), indicating sewage discharged in the coastal zone is poorly treated (e.g., raw sewage and/or primary effluents). Alkylbenzenes with branched alkyl chains, tetrapropylene-based alkylbenzenes, were also detected in mussels from Indonesia and Philippines. This “tell-tale” sign indicates that poorly degradable detergents are still in use in this area, although they have long been phased-out in many industrialized countries. 相似文献
