Abstract

The Complex Terminal (CT) and Plio-Quaternary (P-Q) aquifers in the Chott Gharsa plain in southwestern Tunisia have been investigated with the aid of chemical and isotopic tools. It has been demonstrated that groundwater from the CT is mainly of palaeo-origin, especially in the western and central parts of the plain where the most negative values of δ18O and δ2H were observed (between??8.1 and??7.6‰ for δ18O, and??60 to??57‰ for δ2H), combined with low concentrations of radiocarbon (6.8–7.5 pmc) and absence of tritium. Modern recharge of the aquifer occurs only in the eastern part of the system where younger waters were observed, as indicated by their stable isotope composition, relatively high radiocarbon content and presence of tritium. Groundwater from the P-Q multi-layer aquifer represents mixtures of ascending deep CT waters and modern water recharging the P-Q aquifer system. Isotope mass balance was used to quantify mixing proportions. The calculations showed that the contribution of deep CT groundwater to the P-Q aquifer system reaches about 75% in the western and central parts of the plain where the CT aquifer remains strongly artesian. This contribution decreases to about 15% towards the eastern part of the plain, as a consequence of significant reduction of artesian pressure in this area of the CT aquifer. Chemical data suggest that mineralization of the studied groundwater systems is controlled mainly by dissolution of evaporative minerals (halite, anhydrite and gypsum) and cation exchange reactions with the matrix, possibly enhanced by recent anthropogenic disturbance of the system caused by lowering of the water table due to heavy exploitation and return flow of saline irrigation water into the P-Q aquifer.

It is argued that typical W UMa-type stars are old, advanced evolutionary objects, similar to Algols, in the sense that they are past mass exchange resulting in a mass ratio inversion. Their secondaries are oversized due to depletion of hydrogen, and in many cases they possess small helium cores. An alternative evolutionary scenario leading to such a configuration is presented. Differences between the evolution of binaries with the initial mass ratio far and close to unity are discussed.  相似文献

We examined patterns of habitat function (plant species richness), productivity (plant aboveground biomass and total C), and nutrient stocks (N and P in aboveground plant biomass and soil) in tidal marshes of the Satilla, Altamaha, and Ogeechee Estuaries in Georgia, USA. We worked at two sites within each salinity zone (fresh, brackish, and saline) in each estuary, sampling a transect from the creekbank to the marsh platform. In total, 110 plant species were found. Site-scale and plot-scale species richness decreased from fresh to saline sites. Standing crop biomass and total carbon stocks were greatest at brackish sites, followed by freshwater then saline sites. Nitrogen stocks in plants and soil decreased across sites as salinity increased, while phosphorus stocks did not differ between fresh and brackish sites but were lowest at salty sites. These results generally support past speculation about ecosystem change across the estuarine gradient, emphasizing that ecosystem function in tidal wetlands changes sharply across the relatively short horizontal distance of the estuary. Changes in plant distribution patterns driven by global changes such as sea level rise, changing climates, or fresh water withdrawal are likely to have strong impacts on a variety of wetland functions and services.  相似文献

We present a set of three parametric earth models (PEM) in which radial variations of the density and velocities are represented by piecewise continuous analytical functions of radius (polynomials of order not higher than the third). While all three models are identical below a depth of 420 km, models PEM-O and PEM-C are designed to reflect the different properties of the oceanic and continental upper mantles, respectively. The third model PEM-A is a representation of an average earth.The data used in inversion consist of observations of eigenperiods for 1064 normal modes, 246 travel times of body waves for five different phases and regional surface-wave dispersion data extending to periods as short as 20 seconds. Agreement of the functionals derived for the PEM models with the appropriate observations is satisfactory. In particular, the fit of free-oscillation data is comparable to that obtained in inversion studies in which constraints imposed on the smoothness of structure were not as severe as in our study.Our density distribution for all depths greater than 670 km is consistent with the Adams-Williamson equation to within 0.2% maximum deviation, and these minute departures result only from the limitations imposed by the parametric simplicity of our models. We also show that the velocities in the lower mantle are consistent with the complete third-order finite-strain theory to within 0.2% for VP and 0.4% for VS (r.m.s. relative deviations). The derived pressure derivatives of the velocities are very similar to those obtained for corundum structures in laboratory experiments.We conclude that any departures from homogeneity and adiabaticity within the inner core, outer core or lower mantle must be very small, and that introduction of such deviations is not necessary on the basis of the available observational evidence.  相似文献

Until recently, most of the seismic tomographic modeling has been addressing the question of lateral heterogeneity either in P- or S-wave velocities. The S-wave velocity variations are larger and hence provide stronger signal on long-period waveforms. The direct P travel times, being the first arrivals, on the other hand, are most frequently reported in the International Seismological Centre (ISC) Bulletins. In mineral physics experiments, the variation in bulk velocity is more often measured. To better understand the differences between δvP and δvP patterns and better link the results from mineral physics to those of seismic tomography, we formulate the inverse problem in terms of relative perturbations in the shear velocity vS = (μ/)1/2 and bulk sound velocity vΦ = (K/)1/2. We use a large data set which consists of waveforms, waveform-derived travel times and travel times from the ISC Bulletins. The earthquakes are relocated using corrections for lateral heterogeneity. The events which cannot be reliably determined are discarded. The model is defined as spherical harmonics to Degree 12 horizontally and as Chebyshev polynomials to order 13 radially, for both shear and bulk sound velocity. The inversion is performed under smoothness constraint. The resolution tests and bootstrapping analysis indicate that the model is well recovered, particularly at long wavelength.

The results indicate a much larger variability of shear than bulk sound velocity. The model explains observations well. The most intriguing result obtained in this study is that the variations in shear velocity and bulk sound velocity are negatively correlated in the lowermost mantle. The explanation is not very clear. From the mineral physics point of view, it is not unlikely that this could be explained in terms of thermal variation, even though we are unwilling to rule out the possibility of large wavelength compositional variations.  相似文献

—?In order to improve on the accuracy of event locations at teleseismic distances it is necessary to adequately correct for lateral variations in structure along the ray paths, either through deterministic model-based corrections, empirical path/station corrections, or a combination of both approaches. In this paper we investigate the ability of current three-dimensional models of mantle P-wave velocity to accurately locate teleseismic events. We test four recently published models; two are parameterized in terms of relatively long-wavelength spherical harmonic functions up to degree 12, and two are parameterized in terms of blocks of constant velocity which have a dimension of a few hundreds of km. These models, together with detailed crustal corrections, are used to locate a set of 112 global test events, consisting of both earthquakes and explosions with P-wave travel-time data compiled by the Internation al Seismological Centre (ISC). The results indicate that the supposedly higher resolution block models do not improve the accuracy of teleseismic event locations over the longer wavelength spherical harmonic models. For some source locations the block models do not predict the range of observed travel-time residuals as well as the longer wavelength models. The accuracy of the locations largely varies randomly with geographic position although events in central Asia are particularly well located. We also tested the effect of reduced data sets on the locations. Multiple location iterations using 30 P-wave travel times indicate that teleseismic events may be located within an area of 1000?km2 of the true location 66% of the time with only the model-based corrections, and increasing to 75% if calibration information is available. If as few as 8 phases are available then this is possible only 50% of the time. Further refinement in models and/or procedure, such as the addition of P n phases, azimuth data, and consideration of P-wave anisotropy may provide further improvement in the teleseismic location of small events.  相似文献

An exact and relatively simple analytical transform of the rectangular coordinates to the geodetic coordinates is presented. It does not involve any approximation and the accuracy of practical calculations depends exclusively on the round-off errors.
