Ultramafic rocks around the city of Muğla in SW Turkey are represented by mantle peridotites depleted to various degrees,
ranging from cpx-rich harzburgites to depleted harzburgite and dunite. Cpx-rich harzburgites are thought to be the residua
left after extraction of MORB-type basalt, from which high-Al chromitite [49.2 < Cr# = 100 × Cr/(Cr + Al) < 53.5] crystallised
with a higher proportion of 187Os/188Os (average of 0.1361). However, depleted harzburgites are assumed to be the residua left after extraction of hydrous boninitic
melt produced by second stage partial melting of already depleted mantle due to a subducting slab, from which high-Cr chromitites
(64.2 < Cr# < 85.9) with lower and heterogeneous 187Os/188Os ratio (average of 0.1324) were crystallised as a result of melt–rock interaction in a supra-subduction environment. Dunites
around the chromite deposits are considered to be the product of melt–peridotite interaction. Most of the chromitites contain
high-Cr chromite and display enrichment in IPGE (Os, Ir, Ru) over PPGE (Rh, Pt, Pd), with PGE concentrations between 61 and
1,305 ppb. Consistently, laurite-erlichmanite series minerals with various Os concentrations are found to be the most abundant
PGM inclusions in chromite. Os–Ir–Ru alloy, irarsite, and kashinite, as well as Pt–Fe alloy and Pt-oxide, which are not common
in ophiolitic chromitites, were also detected as magmatic PGM inclusions. Pentlandite, millerite, and, rarely heazlewoodite
form the magmatic inclusions of base-metal sulphide. The presence of olivine and clinopyroxene, as well as hydrous silicate
inclusions such as amphibole and phlogopite, in high-Cr chromitite supports the idea that high-Cr chromitites were formed

Heavy mineral analysis has been carried out in the Barakar Formation of the Talchir Gondwana Bbasin, Orissa. The characteristic
heavy minerals are garnet, zircon, tourmaline, rutile, biotite, chlorite, pyroxenes, hornblende, staurolite, sillimanite,
apatite, epidote, sphene, spinel and siderite including opaques and leucoxene. These heavy minerals are divisible into four
groups on the basis of principal component analysis and suggest derivation of Barakar sediments from pegmatite, acid and basic
igneous as well as low- and high-rank metamorphic rocks lying to the south of the Talchir Gondwana Basin. Though the heavy
mineral suites of all the sandstone samples are by and large similar, differences have been noticed in the frequencies of
many heavy minerals in vertical succession. Cyclic nature and vertical fluctuation of heavy mineral frequencies can be ascribed
to variation of the relief of the source area, sudden release of some of the minerals in the source region and/or existence

Stable Isotopes Reveal Complex Changes in Trophic Relationships Following Nutrient Addition in a Coastal Marine Ecosystem 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Complex links between the top-down and bottom-up forces that structure communities can be disrupted by anthropogenic alterations
of natural habitats. We used relative abundance and stable isotopes to examine changes in epifaunal food webs in seagrass
(Thalassia testudinum) beds following 6 months of experimental nutrient addition at two sites in Florida Bay (USA) with different ambient fertility.
At a eutrophic site, nutrient addition did not strongly affect food web structure, but at a nutrient-poor site, enrichment
increased the abundances of crustacean epiphyte grazers, and the diets of these grazers became more varied. Benthic grazers
did not change in abundance but shifted their diet away from green macroalgae + associated epiphytes and towards an opportunistic
seagrass (Halodule wrightii) that occurred only in nutrient addition treatments. Benthic predators did not change in abundance, but their diets were
more varied in enriched plots. Food chain length was short and unaffected by site or nutrient treatment, but increased food
web complexity in enriched plots was suggested by increasingly mixed diets. Strong bottom-up modifications of food web structure
in the nutrient-limited site and the limited top-down influences of grazers on seagrass epiphyte biomass suggest that, in
this system, the bottom-up role of nutrient enrichment can have substantial impacts on community structure, trophic relationships,
and, ultimately, the productivity values of the ecosystem. 相似文献

Risk assessment and zoning are very important to risk management. In this study, a land subsidence risk assessment index was
proposed based on the Disaster Risk Index. The cumulative subsidence volume, the land subsidence velocity, and the groundwater
exploitation intensity were collected, analyzed, and put together to create a land subsidence hazard evaluation map in Tianjin
coastal area. The population density, Gross Domestic Product per square kilometer, and construction land proportion were adopted
as indexes to create the vulnerability map. In addition, the capability of land subsidence prevention and reduction was also
assessed. Finally, the land subsidence risk map was created by combing the hazard, vulnerability, and the capability of land
subsidence prevention and reduction map. Specifically, the land subsidence risk was classified into five levels, i.e., very
high, high, medium, low, and very low. The result of this research could provide a solid basis for the sustainable development
as well as disaster prevention policy-making of Tianjin city. 相似文献

Soil erosion prediction using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) in a GIS framework,Chania, Northwestern Crete,Greece 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Soil erosion is a growing problem in southern Greece and particularly in the island of Crete, the biggest Greek island with
great agricultural activity. Soil erosion not only decreases agricultural productivity, but also reduces the water availability.
In the current study, an effort to predict potential annual soil loss has been conducted. For the prediction, the Revised
Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) has been adopted in a Geographical Information System framework. The RUSLE factors were
calculated (in the form of raster layers) for the nine major watersheds which cover the northern part of the Chania Prefecture.
The R-factor was calculated from monthly and annual precipitation data. The K-factor was estimated using soil maps available from the Soil Geographical Data Base of Europe at a scale of 1:1,000,000.
The LS-factor was calculated from a 30-m digital elevation model. The C-factor was calculated using Remote Sensing techniques. The P-factor in absence of data was set to 1. The results show that an extended part of the area is undergoing severe erosion.
The mean annual soil loss is predicted up to ∼200 (t/ha year−1) for some watersheds showing extended erosion and demanding the attention of local administrators. 相似文献

Samples taken from a shooting range near Blacksburg, VA, USA provide information about the reservoirs and pathways of lead
at shooting ranges in an upland setting and humid environment. The metallic lead shot corrodes rapidly and develops a coating
of hydrocerussite (Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2). Hydrocerussite dissolution releases soluble lead at concentrations ranging from 2 ppb to 2 ppm depending the soil pH values
at this site. This soluble lead is captured by the Fe and Mn oxides and carbonates soil fractions. The highest concentration
of extractable lead contained in the soil was directly correlated with the highest concentration of lead shot and bullets
measured on the shotgun range surface. Eh-pH and hydrolysis diagrams provide a useful geochemical framework for understanding
the corrosion process, recognizing the corrosion product(s), understanding their solubility, and identifying the geochemical
barriers to lead migration that provides a basis for selecting best management practices for this and other shooting range. 相似文献

Study of subsurface geology in locating arsenic-free groundwater in Bengal delta,West Bengal,India 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Over a large area of the Bengal delta in West Bengal, India, arsenic distribution patterns in groundwater were studied. One
hundred and ten boreholes at different target locations were made, subsurface sediments were logged and analysed, and arsenic
values in sediments vis-à-vis groundwater were compared. The study elucidates the subsurface geology of the western part of
Bengal delta and characterises the sediments that were intersected in different boreholes with contrasting values of arsenic
in groundwater. It reveals an existence of multiple aquifers stacked over each other. Depending on the color and nature of
aquifer-sands and their overlying clay beds six aquifer types (Type-1 to Type-6) are classified and described. Sediment-arsenic
for all the varieties of aquifer sands are near similar but the groundwater-arsenic of these six aquifers varies widely. Type-2
and Type-5 aquifers host arsenic-contaminated groundwater whereas the other four aquifers are arsenic-free. Type-2 and Type-5
aquifers are capped by a grey to dark grey soft organic matter-rich clay unit which makes these aquifers semi-confined to
leaky-confined. These contribute in releasing arsenic from the sediments. The results of this study are employed in a proposed

Present study is an effort to distinguish between the contributions of natural weathering and anthropogenic inputs towards
high salinity and nutrient concentrations in the groundwater of National Capital Territory (NCT) Delhi, India. Apart from
the source identification, the aquifer of entire territory has been characterized and mapped on the basis of salinity in space
and water suitability with its depth. Major element chemistry, conventional graphical plots and specific ionic ratio of Na+/Cl−, SO4
2−/Cl−, Mg2+/Ca2+ and Ca2+/(HCO3
− + SO4
2−) are conjointly used to distinguish different salinization sources. Results suggest that leaching from the various unlined
landfill sites and drains is the prime cause of NO3
− contamination while study area is highly affected with inland salinity which is geogenic in origin. The seasonal water level
fluctuation and rising water level increases nutrients concentration in groundwater. Mixing with old saline sub-surface groundwater
and dissolution of surface salts in the salt affected soil areas were identified as the principle processes controlling groundwater
salinity through comparison of ionic ratio. Only minor increase of salinity is the result of evaporation effect and pollution
inflows. The entire territory has characterized into four groups as fresh, freshening, near freshening and saline with respect
to salinity in groundwater. The salinity mapping suggests that in general, for drinking needs, groundwater in the fresh, freshening
and near freshening zone is suitable up to a depth of 45, 20 and 12 m, respectively, while the saline zones are unsuitable
for any domestic use. In the consideration of increasing demand of drinking water in the area; present study is vital and
recommends further isotopic investigations and highlights the need of immediate management action for landfill sites and unlined

The spatial and temporal changes of the composition of the groundwater from the springs along the Wadi Qilt stream running
from the Jerusalem–Ramallah Mountains towards the Jericho Plain is studied during the hydrological year 2006/2007. The residence
time and the intensity of recharge play an important role in controlling the chemical composition of spring water which mainly
depends on distance from the main recharge area. A very important factor is the oxidation of organics derived from sewage
and garbage resulting in variable dissolved CO2 and associated HCO3
− concentration. High CO2 yields lower pH values and thus under-saturation with respect to calcite and dolomite. Low CO2 concentrations result in over-saturation. Only at the beginning and at the end of the rainy season calcite saturation is
achieved. The degradation of dissolved organic matter is a major source for increasing water hardness. Besides dissolution
of carbonates dissolved species such as nitrate, chloride, and sulfate are leached from soil and aquifer rocks together with
only small amounts of Mg. Mg not only originates from carbonates but also from Mg–Cl waters are leached from aquifer rocks.
Leaching of Mg–Cl brines is particularly high at the beginning of the winter season and lowest at its end. Two zones of recharge
are distinguishable. Zone 1 represented by Ein Fara and Ein Qilt is fed directly through the infiltration of meteoric water
and surface runoff from the mountains along the eastern mountain slopes with little groundwater residence time and high flow
rate. The second zone is near the western border of Jericho at the foothills, which is mainly fed by the under-groundwater
flow from the eastern slopes with low surface infiltration rate. This zone shows higher groundwater residence time and slower
flow rate than zone 1. Groundwater residence time and the flow rate within the aquifer systems are controlled by the geological
structure of the aquifer, the amount of active recharge to the aquifer, and the recharge mechanism. The results of this study
may be useful in increasing the efficiency of freshwater exploitation in the region. Some precautions, however, should be
taken in future plans of artificial recharge of the aquifers or surface-water harvesting in the Wadi. Because of evaporation
and associated groundwater deterioration, the runoff water should be artificially infiltrated in zones of Wadis with high
storage capacity of aquifers. Natural infiltration along the Wadis lead to evaporation losses and less quality of groundwater. 相似文献

Interaction of magma with wall rock is an important process in igneous petrology, but the mechanisms by which interactions
occur are poorly known. The western outer granodiorite of the Cretaceous Tuolumne Intrusive Suite of Yosemite National Park,
California, intruded a variety of metasedimentary and igneous wall rocks at 93.1 Ma. The May Lake metamorphic screen is a
metasedimentary remnant whose contact zone exhibits a variety of interaction phenomena including xenolith incorporation, disaggregation,
and partial melting. The chemical contrast of these metasedimentary rocks with the invading pluton provides an excellent measure
of pluton/wall rock interactions. Wall rock xenoliths (mostly pelitic quartzite) are predominantly located in an elongate
horizon surrounded by a hybridized fine-grained granodiorite. Initial Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the hybridized granodiorite
indicate significant local incorporation of crustal material. Major- and trace-element geochemical data indicate that contamination
of the granodiorite occurred via selective assimilation of both high-K and low-K, high-silica partial melts derived from pelitic
quartzite. Although the hybridized granodiorite shows significant amounts of contamination, adjacent to xenoliths the proportion
of contamination is undetectable more than a meter away. These results indicate that the chemical and isotopic variability
of the Tuolumne Intrusive Suite is not caused by magma contamination via in situ wall rock assimilation. 相似文献
