In recent years, evidence has accumulated suggesting that the gas in galaxy clusters is heated by non-gravitational processes. Here, we calculate the heating rates required to maintain a physically motivated mass flow rate, in a sample of seven galaxy clusters. We employ the spectroscopic mass deposition rates as an observational input along with temperature and density data for each cluster. On energetic grounds, we find that thermal conduction could provide the necessary heating for A2199, Perseus, A1795 and A478. However, the suppression factor of the classical Spitzer value is a different function of radius for each cluster. Based on the observations of plasma bubbles, we also calculate the duty cycles for each active galactic nucleus (AGN), in the absence of thermal conduction, which can provide the required energy input. With the exception of Hydra-A, it appears that each of the other AGNs in our sample requires duty cycles of roughly 106–107 yr to provide their steady-state heating requirements. If these duty cycles are unrealistic, this may imply that many galaxy clusters must be heated by very powerful Hydra-A type events interspersed between more frequent smaller scale outbursts. The suppression factors for the thermal conductivity required for combined heating by AGN and thermal conduction are generally acceptable. However, these suppression factors still require 'fine-tuning' of the thermal conductivity as a function of radius. As a consequence of this work, we present the AGN duty cycle as a cooling flow diagnostic.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of the distribution of trace elements in Estonian mires. Sixty four mires, representative of the different landscape units, were analyzed for the content of 16 trace elements (Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb using AAS; Cd by GF-AAS; Hg by the cold vapour method; and V, Co, As, Sr, Mo, Th, and U by XRF) as well as other peat characteristics (peat type, degree of humification, pH and ash content). The results of the research show that concentrations of trace elements in peat are generally low: V 3.8 ± 0.6, Cr 3.1 ± 0.2, Mn 35.1 ± 2.7, Co 0.50 ± 0.05, Ni 3.7 ± 0.2, Cu 4.4 ± 0.3, Zn 10.0 ± 0.7, As 2.4 ± 0.3, Sr 21.9 ± 0.9, Mo 1.2 ± 0.2, Cd 0.12 ± 0.01, Hg 0.05 ± 0.01, Pb 3.3 ± 0.2, Th 0.47 ± 0.05, U 1.3 ± 0.2 μg g− 1 and S 0.25 ± 0.02%. Statistical analyses on these large database showed that Co has the highest positive correlations with many elements and ash content. As, Ni, Mo, ash content and pH are also significantly correlated. The lowest abundance of most trace elements was recorded in mires fed only by precipitation (ombrotrophic), and the highest in mires fed by groundwater and springs (minerotrophic), which are situated in the flood plains of river valleys. Concentrations usually differ between the superficial, middle and bottom peat layers, but the significance decreases depending on the type of mire in the following order: transitional mires – raised bogs – fens. Differences among mire types are highest for the superficial but not significant for the basal peat layers.The use of peat with high concentrations of trace elements in agriculture, horticulture, as fuel, for water purification etc., may pose a risk for humans: via the food chain, through inhalation, drinking water etc.  相似文献

Abstract— We have measured excess Ir and depletion of 14C, two independent indicators of cosmic material, in peat cores from the central Tunguska impact site. Both Ir and 14C show pronounced anomalies in the same stratigraphical depth interval. We have estimated an integral deposition of nonradioactive cosmogenic C of 6.8 ± 1.0 mg C cm?2, and an integrated Ir deposition of 5.9 ± 1.2 pg Ir cm?2. The very high C/Ir ratio and a deduced δ13C value of +55 ± 10% relative to V Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB) of the impactor material found in this study points towards a cometary type impactor, rather than a chondritic or achondritic asteroidal type impactor.  相似文献

There is no generally accepted evolutionary scheme for high mass star formation yet. A simple approach to address this problem is to cover several of the known stages during the formation of massive stars in the same cloud and then investigate their properties trying to construct an evolutionary sequence. Here we present such a project conducted with complementary APEX and ATCA observations. These observations show a compact and bright single hot core in the G327.3-0.6 region on a 0.03 pc scale with a mass of 500 M and 0.5–1.5 105 L. Additionally a clumpy filament is seen in N2H+. Together with cm continuum observations, the data reveal like pearls on a string several stages of massive star formation, with likely the youngest stages hiding in the cold N2H+ cores analysed with a multilevel study of the APEX and ATCA observations.  相似文献

We present Monte Carlo simulations for the polarization of light reflected from planetary atmospheres. We investigate dependencies of intensity and polarization on three main parameters: single scattering albedo, optical depth of a scattering layer, and albedo of a Lambert surface underneath. The main scattering process considered is Rayleigh scattering, but isotropic scattering and enhanced forward scattering on haze particles are also investigated. We discuss disk integrated results for all phase angles and radial profiles of the limb polarization at opposition. These results are useful to interpret available limb polarization measurements of solar system planets and to predict the polarization of extra-solar planets as a preparation for VLT/SPHERE. Most favorable for a detection are planets with an optically thick Rayleigh-scattering layer. The limb polarization of Uranus and Neptune is especially sensitive to the vertically stratified methane mixing ratio. From limb polarization measurements constraints on the polarization at large phase angles can be set.  相似文献

During a unique solar radio event on March 2, 1970, among very diverse features, a very regular pattern was observed in the solar radio spectrographic record between 220 and 320 MHz. The proposed explanation is emission by slightly relativistic electrons at the sum frequency of the plasma frequency ( 160 MHz) and the lower harmonics of the local gyrofrequency (n from 3 to 10), rather than emission at pure harmonics of the gyrofrequency (n from 15 to 20). The derived magnetic field strengths range from 3 to 8 G, and can be determined very accurately. From the simultaneously occurring pulsating structure in the type IV emission and the deduced magnetic field strength a typical size of the emitting region of 2–300 km is derived.  相似文献

Photographs of Comet Bennett 1969i taken in the dust-scattered continuum reveal that the dust particles, leading to the formation of the type II tail, leave the vicinity of the nucleus only within a certain cone with the aperture in the direction to the Sun. Three parabolic envelopes embracing the nucleus are formed by the dust (vertex always about on the radius vector) reaching distances from the nucleus of 30 000, 60 000 and 100 000 km.There exists no relation between the production and motion of this dust and the production and motion of the neutral coma gases. The cone of expulsion of the dust is identical with the cone of expulsion for the ions leading to the formation of the type I tail. Dust- and ion envelopes have, however, different kinematical properties. The cone of expulsion is identical with Bessel's Ausströmungskegel of visible matter observed by him in Comet Halley 1835.Comet Bennett is compared with Comet Halley 1910; they are related in many respects although Comet Halley had a lower dust production than the Comet Bennett.We ascribe to the dust particles of the tail II from the beginning of the expulsion an electrical charge.  相似文献
