For the optimal use in palaeoceanographic studies of the stable oxygen isotopic signal and elemental composition of the calcareous photosynthetic dinoflagellate Thoracosphaera heimii, it is essential to gain detailed information about its calcification depth and spatial distribution. We therefore studied the vertical and horizontal distribution patterns of T. heimii in the upper water column (0–200 m) along three transects: an inshore–offshore gradient off Cape Blanc (CB), a south–north transect from CB to the Portuguese coast and a north–south transect off Tanzania. We compared concentrations of living cysts (cells with cell content) with chlorophyll-a, salinity and temperature measurements at the sampling depth. In order to explore the seasonal variability in cyst production, three transect off CB were sampled at three different times of the year.Living T. heimii cysts were found in the upper 160 m of the water column with highest concentrations in the photic zone indicating that the calcification of T. heimii occurs in the upper part of the water column. Maximal abundances of living cysts were found relatively often in or just above the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM), the depth of which varies regionally from about 20–40 m off CB to about 80 m off Tanzania and along the transect from CB to the Portuguese Coast. However, there was no significant correlation at the 95% confidence level between the cyst concentrations and temperature, salinity and chlorophyll-a concentrations at the sampling depths observed.In both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the highest abundances of T. heimii were observed in regions where the upper water masses contained relatively low nutrient concentrations that are influenced only sporadically, or not at all, by enhanced photic zone mixing related to the presence of upwelling cells or river outflow plumes at or close to the sampling sites. The seasonal production of cysts by T. heimii appears to be negatively related to the presence of upwelling filaments across the sampling sites. Our study suggests that turbulence of the upper water masses is a major environmental factor influencing T. heimii production.  相似文献

Summary Marble lenses within the polymetamorphic Ötztal crystalline complex frequently contain pockets of clinohumite and chondrodite and their titanium-rich varieties. Chondrodites contain up to 9.1 wt% TiO2 and clinohumites about half that amount. The maximum amounts of Ti in both minerals do not exeed values of 0.4 in the formula. XTi and XF are correlated by a slope of –1, indicating the efficiency of the TiO2Mg–1F–2 substitution at constant OH (Evans andTrommsdorff, 1983). Clinohumites sometimes contain lamellae which have nonstoichiometric cation ratios reflecting a composition between clinohumite and olivine. In many cases Ti-rich clinohumites and chondrodites coexist with Mg-ilmenite. Ti-rich clinohumites and chondrodites often break down to a symplectite of Ti-poor clinohumite (or olivine) and Mg-ilmenite. Parts of the marbles, which are barren of Mg-ilmenite contain F-rich clinohumites. The latter do not show any signs of breakdown features. We conclude therefore that fluorine stabilizes the humite group minerals to a wide range of metamorphic conditions. Ti-rich humite-group minerals are not stable till amphibolite facies conditions, and below F-rich humite-group minerals and olivine are the more stable phases in a H2O-rich, SiO2-poor carbonate system.
Titanreiche Chondrodite und Klinohumite in Marmoren des Ötztalkristallins.
Zusammenfassung In Marmorlinsen des polymetamorphen Ötztalkristaliins kommen häufig titanarme und titanreiche Clinohumite und Chondrodite vor. Die höchsten Titan-Gehalte in Chondrodit betragen 9.1 Gew.-% TiO2 während Clinohumite nur etwa die Hälfte dieses Wertes enthalten. Dies entspricht einem Maximalgehalt an Titan von 0.4 in den Formeln von Chondrodit und Clinohumit. Eine negative Korrelation zwischen XTi, und XF mit der Steigung von –1 bestätigt die Wirksamkeit der Substitution TiO2Mg–1F–2 bei konstantem OH (Evans undTrommsdorff, 1983). In Clinohumiten konnten nichtstöchiometrische Lamellen nachgewiesen werden, die chemisch zwischen Clinohumit und Olivin zusammengesetzt sind. Ti-reiche Clinohumite und Chondrodite koexistieren immer mit Mg-Ilmenit und wandeln sich häufig an ihren Rändern in einen Symplektit von Ti-ärmerem Clinohumit oder Olivin und Mg-Ilmenit um. In den Mg-Ilmenit freien Bereichen der Marmore kommen stets Ti-arme aber F-reiche Clinohumite vor, die niemals randliche Umwandlungserscheinungen zeigen. Die grobkörnigen (mm-großen) Humitminerale werden der variszischen Metamorphose in Amphibolitfazies zugeschrieben, während die Symplektite als Produkte der eoalpinen grünschieferfaziellen Überprägung angesehen werden. Wir schließen daraus, daß die Humitminerale durch Fluor in einem großen Bereich metamorpher Bedingungen stabilisiert werden, während Ti-reiche Humitminerale bei Bedingungen der Grünschieferfazies instabil werden und F-reiche Humitminerale und Olivin die stabilen Phasen in einem H2O-reichen, SiO2-armen Karbonatsystem sind.

The objective of this article is to determine whether pollution trends can be reconstructed from sediments in the outer Göta älv estuary. Detailed interpretation of heavy metal profiles in the recent sediment, in combination with profiles of 210Pb- and 137Cs-activity, organic carbon content and grain size distribution, allows estimation of historical trends. This is based on the assumption that only certain intervals, which can be identified, are disturbed. The sediment data are compared with archive data on historical trends in emissions of heavy metals. Special attention is given to mercury, which shows high enrichment over long periods of time. It is found that the most polluted sediments were deposited between 1930 and 1980, but that episodic discharges have also occurred more recently. Nevertheless, the effects of remediation since the 1970s are apparent.  相似文献

Juvenile fishes often face conditions that force them to experience fitness trade-offs (e.g., foregoing a rich food patch because of high risk of predation). In this study, three aspects of the environment of juvenile American shad: food availability, predation risk, and “thermal risk” (defined here as the probability of the onset of adverse temperatures; ≤9°C, the temperature at which feeding ceases), are evaluated empirically with data from the Hudson River estuary in New York State. The evaluations are then used in dynamic programming models to determine when juvenile American shad should switch habitat (upper versus middle versus lower estuary), and, in combination with a simple bioenergetic model, to determine growth trajectories for fish spawned at different times in the spawning season. Comparisons of simulations with real data suggest that scenarios in which predation risk is highest in the lower river produce the most realistic patterns of habitat use. High upriver food availability in June promotes use of the upriver habitat; however, by September most size classes of fish utilize the middle estuary, and by late October, fish move to the lower estuary (even in the face of higher predation risk), due to a combination of lower food resources and thermal risks in the upper and middle estuary.  相似文献

We discuss the searches for massive magnetic monopoles and for nuclearitesin the penetrating cosmic radiation performed with the MACRO detector. Independent monopole analysis were carried out using the scintillator, streamer tubes and nuclear track sub-detectors in different ranges of velocity. No candidates were found in several years of data taking; present upper flux limits are well below the Parker bound in a wide velocity range. For nuclearites only the scintillator and nuclear track sub-detectors were used.  相似文献

Based on a revised chronostratigraphy, and compilation of borehole data from the Barents Sea continental margin, a coherent glaciation model is proposed for the Barents Sea ice sheet over the past 3.5 million years (Ma). Three phases of ice growth are suggested: (1) The initial build-up phase, covering mountainous regions and reaching the coastline/shelf edge in the northern Barents Sea during short-term glacial intensification, is concomitant with the onset of the Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (3.6–2.4 Ma). (2) A transitional growth phase (2.4–1.0 Ma), during which the ice sheet expanded towards the southern Barents Sea and reached the northwestern Kara Sea. This is inferred from step-wise decrease of Siberian river-supplied smectite-rich sediments, likely caused by ice sheet blockade and possibly reduced sea ice formation in the Kara Sea as well as glacigenic wedge growth along the northwestern Barents Sea margin hampering entrainment and transport of sea ice sediments to the Arctic–Atlantic gateway. (3) Finally, large-scale glaciation in the Barents Sea occurred after 1 Ma with repeated advances to the shelf edge. The timing is inferred from ice grounding on the Yermak Plateau at about 0.95 Ma, and higher frequencies of gravity-driven mass movements along the western Barents Sea margin associated with expansive glacial growth.  相似文献

Chemostratigraphy has diverse applications to investigating the rock record, such as reconstructing paleoenvironments, determining the tectonic setting of sedimentary basins, indirect dating, and establishing regional or global correlations. Chemostratigraphy is thus an integral component of many investigations of the ancient sedimentary record. In this contribution, we review the principle inorganic geochemical methods that have been applied to the Neoproterozoic sedimentary record. Analysis of the traditional stable and radiogenic isotope systems, such as δ13C, δ18O, δ34S, and 87Sr/86Sr, is routine, particularly in successions rich in carbonate. These mainstay applications have yielded invaluable data and information bearing on the chronology and evolution of this eventful era in Earth history. Alongside the growing database of traditional data, a series of novel geochemical techniques have given rise to important new models and constraints on Neoproterozoic biogeochemical change. In particular, a range of proxies for water column redox, mainly obtained from black shales, have shed light on the pace and tempo of Neoproterozoic oxygenation and its link to the appearance of early animal evolution. Increased integration of diverse geochemical, sedimentological, and paleontological datasets, and the gradual radiometric calibration of the stratigraphic record promise to bring the details of the evolution of the Neoproterozoic Earth system into ever greater focus.  相似文献

The invasion and expansion of the introduced haplotype of Phragmites australis across North America is of growing concern. Previous studies in the Chesapeake Bay region found that Phragmites was more abundant, had higher foliar nitrogen, and produced more viable seeds in brackish wetland subestuaries with more anthropogenic development of the watershed. Here, we focus on a different scale and address issues related to the invasion of Phragmites within a single subestuary, the Rhode River. We evaluated patterns in seed viability, foliar nutrient concentrations, patch size, and genetic variation in ten Phragmites patches in wetlands that occur in the side of the subestuary that is surrounded by forest and 10 patches in wetlands that are in the side of the subestuary that has extensive anthropogenic development. Seed viability varied from 0–60% among the 20 patches but did not differ significantly between patches on the developed vs. forested sides of the Rhode River. Foliar nutrients also did not differ between patches on the two sides of the Rhode River. Seed viability, however, was negatively related to foliar nutrients. Most Phragmites patches consisted of >1 genotype. Larger patches had multiple genotypes, and patches with more genotypes produced more viable seeds. Our study indicates that the Rhode River subestuary behaves as one system with no differences in the measured Phragmites variables between the forested vs. developed sides of the watershed. Our findings also suggest a cyclical process by which Phragmites can spread: larger patches contain more genetic diversity, which increases the chances for cross-fertilization. The subsequent increased production of viable seeds can increase local levels of genetic diversity, which can further facilitate the spread of Phragmites by seed.  相似文献

Very high-resolution seismic profiles highlighted three main depositional sequences of several hundred meters thick on the South-Aquitaine shelf. The youngest one, the soft sedimentary cover (U1), is presented in this article. It is composed of six seismic units deposited during the Late Quaternary and corresponds to a repetition of a sequence type. The sequence type is formed in four phases: an erosional unconformity (S), a sub-unit “a”, an internal erosional unconformity (St) and a sub-unit “b”. The first phase begins with the erosional unconformity (S), which could be formed during the sea level fall. The second phase is the deposition of the sub-unit “a”, likely during the sea level lowstand and the early sea level rise. Its acoustic facies is generally chaotic with small channels and could be filled by coarse or heterogeneous sediments. The third phase is the formation of a plane and high amplitude unconformity (St) which could be correlated with a transgressive or a wave ravinement surface. The fourth phase corresponds to the deposition, probably during the sea level rise, of the sub-unit “b” which is characterized by subparallel reflections.  相似文献
