Geochemical modeling of magma mixing allows for evaluation of volumes of magma storage reservoirs and magma plumbing configurations.
A new analytical expression is derived for a simple two-component box-mixing model describing the proportions of mixing components
in erupted lavas as a function of time. Four versions of this model are applied to a mixing trend spanning episodes 3–31 of
Kilauea Volcano’s Puu Oo eruption, each testing different constraints on magma reservoir input and output fluxes. Unknown
parameters (e.g., magma reservoir influx rate, initial reservoir volume) are optimized for each model using a non-linear least
squares technique to fit model trends to geochemical time-series data. The modeled mixing trend closely reproduces the observed
compositional trend. The two models that match measured lava effusion rates have constant magma input and output fluxes and
suggest a large pre-mixing magma reservoir (46±2 and 49±1 million m3), with little or no volume change over time. This volume is much larger than a previous estimate for the shallow, dike-shaped
magma reservoir under the Puu Oo vent, which grew from ∼3 to ∼10–12 million m3. These volumetric differences are interpreted as indicating that mixing occurred first in a larger, deeper reservoir before
the magma was injected into the overlying smaller reservoir.

A large multi-institutional nearshore field experiment was conducted at Truc Vert, on the Atlantic coast of France in early 2008. Truc Vert’08 was designed to measure beach change on a long, sandy stretch of coast without engineering works with emphasis on large winter waves (offshore significant wave height up to 8 m), a three-dimensional morphology, and macro-tidal conditions. Nearshore wave transformation, circulation and bathymetric changes involve coupled processes at many spatial and temporal scales thus implying the need to improve our knowledge for the full spectrum of scales to achieve a comprehensive view of the natural system. This experiment is unique when compared with existing experiments because of the simultaneous investigation of processes at different scales, both spatially (from ripples to sand banks) and temporally (from single swash events to several spring-neap tidal cycles, including a major storm event). The purpose of this paper is to provide background information on the experiment by providing detailed presentation of the instrument layout and snapshots of preliminary results. 相似文献

Previous failure analyses of bridges typically focus on substructure failure or superstructure failure separately. However, in an actual bridge, the seismic induced substructure failure and superstructure failure may influence each other. Moreover, previous studies typically use simplified models to analyze the bridge failure; however, there are inherent defects in the calculation accuracy compared with using a detailed three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model. Conversely, a detailed 3D FE model requires more computational costs, and a proper erosion criterion of the 3D elements is necessary. In this paper, a multi-scale FE model, including a corresponding erosion criterion, is proposed and validated that can significantly reduce computational costs with high precision by modelling a pseudo-dynamic test of an reinforced concrete (RC) pier. Numerical simulations of the seismic failures of a continuous RC bridge based on the multi-scale FE modeling method using LS-DYNA are performed. The nonlinear properties of the bridge, various connection strengths and bidirectional excitations are considered. The numerical results demonstrate that the failure of the connections will induce large pounding responses of the girders. The nonlinear deformation of the piers will aggravate the pounding damages. Furthermore, bidirectional earthquakes will induce eccentric poundings to the girders and different failure modes to the adjacent piers. 相似文献

Based on the light-photosynthesis response measurement at leaf level, combined with over-and under-canopy eddy covariance measurements, research on photosynthetic characteristics of single trees and forest canopy was conducted. The relationship between light intensity and photosynthetic rates for leaves and canopy can be well fitted by a non-rectangular hyperbola model. Mongolian oak presented a high light compensation point, L cp (28 μmol·m?2·s?1), a light saturation point L sp (>1800 μmol·m?2·s?1), and a maximal net photosynthetic rate P max (9.96 μmol·m?2·s?1), which suggest that it is a typical heliophilous plant. Mono maple presented the highest apparent quantum efficiency α (0.066) but the lowest, L cp (16 μmol·m?2·s?1), L sp (≈800 μmol·m?2·s?1), and P max (4.51 μmol·m?2·s?1), which suggest that it is heliophilous plant. Korean pine showed the lowest α value but a higher P max, which suggest that it is a semi-heliophilous plant. At the canopy level, the values of both α and P max approached the upper limit of reported values in temperate forests, while L cp was within the lower limit. Canopy photosynthetic characteristics were well consistent with those of leaves. Both showed a high ability to photosynthesize. However, environmental stresses, especially high vapor pressure deficits, could significantly reduce the photosynthetic ability of leaves and canopy. 相似文献

In code-based seismic design and assessment it is often allowed the use of real records as an input for nonlinear dynamic
analysis. On the other hand, international seismic guidelines, concerning this issue, have been found hardly applicable by
practitioners. This is related to both the difficulty in rationally relating the ground motions to the hazard at the site
and the required selection criteria, which do not favor the use of real records, but rather various types of spectrum matching
signals. To overcome some of these obstacles a software tool for code-based real records selection was developed. REXEL, freely
available at the website of the Italian network of earthquake engineering university labs (), allows to search for suites of waveforms, currently from the European Strong-motion Database, compatible to reference spectra
being either user-defined or automatically generated according to Eurocode 8 and the recently released new Italian seismic
code. The selection reflects the provisions of the considered codes and others found to be important by recent research on
the topic. In the paper, record selection criteria are briefly reviewed first, and then the algorithms implemented in the
software are discussed. Finally, via some examples, it is shown how REXEL can effectively be a contribution to code-based

A micro-seismic network was used for monitoring the wreck of the Costa Concordia cruise ship, wrecked and run agrounded along the Giglio Island coasts during the night of 13 January 2012, until its removal. The seismic traces were processed by means of real-time and “a posteriori” procedures to detect transients that could be ascribed to wreck movements on the sea bed to integrate this information in an early warning system for assessing the wreck stability. After a first discrimination of the transients using amplitude criteria we proceeded to the localization of the detected signals to focus the attention only on the transients originated in the shipwreck resting area. The results showed that most of the events localized on the wreck were likely related to human work activities or sudden internal brittle failure but not to displacements on the seafloor. Instead, the displacements are associated to the impact on the vessel of great sea storms which approach were well correlated with the increasing seismic noise at low frequency. The carried out procedures based on this unique dataset represent an opportunity to test seismic monitoring techniques also in not usual engineering context to support emergency management activities. 相似文献

We studied the effects of expected end-of-the-century pCO2 (1000 ppm) on the photosynthetic performance of a coastal marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC7002 during the lag, exponential, and stationary growth phases. Elevated pCO2 significantly stimulated growth, and enhanced the maximum cell density during the stationary phase. Under ambient pCO2 conditions, the lag phase lasted for 6 days, while elevated pCO2 shortened the lag phase to two days and extended the exponential phase by four days. The elevated pCO2 increased photosynthesis levels during the lag and exponential phases, but reduced them during the stationary phase. Moreover, the elevated pCO2 reduced the saturated growth light (Ik) and increased the light utilization efficiency (α) during the exponential and stationary phases, and elevated the phycobilisome:chlorophyll a (Chl a) ratio. Furthermore, the elevated pCO2 reduced the particulate organic carbon (POC):Chl a and particulate organic nitrogen (PON):Chl a ratios during the lag and stationary phases, but enhanced them during the exponential phase. Overall, Synechococcus showed differential physiological responses to elevated pCO2 during different growth phases, thus providing insight into previous studies that focused on only the exponential phase, which may have biased the results relative to the effects of elevated pCO2 in ecology or aquaculture. 相似文献

Two types of the Jurassic basins are distinguished in SE China based on their geodynamic features: the Late Triassic-Early
Jurassic post-orogenic basins and the Middle Jurassic intra-continental extensional basins. The Lower Jurassic sequence shows
a change from coarse- to fine-grained accumulation, suggesting a gradually deepening depositional environment from river to
shore-lake and to deep-water lake. In contrast, the Middle Jurassic accumulation was changed from claystone to conglomerate
along the coastal provinces in SE China, indicative of an initial crustal uplift. The Wuyi Mountains have been a paleogeograghic
separating zone since the Middle Jurassic. The Late Jurassic strata are absent in most areas of SE China. A large-scale bimodal
intra-continental rift-type volcanism occurred during the Middle Jurassic along a 40–60 km wide and 200 km long area in western
Fujian and southern Jiangxi provinces, which is most likely the strongest volcanism in SE China since the Cambrian. The SHRIMP
zircon U-Pb analyses on the rhyolite from the Dongkeng basin in the southern Jiangxi area yield a concord U-Pb age of 160±0.5
Ma, providing an upper age limit for the bimodal volcanic eruption. The analyses of the basin features indicate a change of
the depositional environment during the interval from Middle Triassic to Late Triassic from a shallow-sea to an intra-continent
in SE China in response to the strong collision between the Yangtze and North China Blocks. Sedimentary structures record
a southward direction of Early Jurassic paleo-currents, reflecting that their source areas were to the north side. We propose
that the Wuyi region was uplifted as early as Middle Jurassic, followed by a wide E-W-trending extended depression and bimodal
volcanism in the western foot of the Wuyi Mountains. Presumably the uplift of the Wuyi domain changed the Middle Jurassic
paleogeographic outline and formed the transformational tectonic regime from compression to extension as a tectonic response

The planetary boundary-layer (PBL) parameterization is a key issue for the definition of initial wind flow fields in diagnostic
models. However, PBL theories usually treat separately stable, neutral, and convective stability conditions, so that their
implementation in diagnostic wind models is not straightforward. In the present paper, an attempt is made to adopt a comprehensive
PBL parameterisation, covering stable/neutral and unstable atmospheric conditions, which appears suitable to diagnostic models.
This parameterisation is implemented into our diagnostic mass-consistent code. A validation of the consistency between the
implemented PBL parameterisations has been checked through an analysis of the sensitivity of the vertical wind profiles to

Aerosol dispersion in the area surrounding an existing biological treatment facility is investigated using large-eddy simulation,
with the objective to investigate the applicability of computational fluid dynamics to complex real-life problems. The aerosol
sources consist of two large aeration ponds that slowly diffuse aerosols into the atmosphere. These sources are modelled as
dilute concentrations of a non-buoyant non-reacting pollutant diffusing from two horizontal surfaces. The time frame of the
aerosol release is restricted to the order of minutes, justifying a statistically steady inlet boundary condition. The numerical
results are compared to wind-tunnel experiments for validation. The wind-tunnel flow characteristics resemble neutral atmospheric
conditions with a Reynolds number, based on the boundary-layer thickness, of Re
δ
≈ 2 × 105. The numerical inflow conditions are based upon the wind-tunnel flow field. The predicted decay of both the mean and root-mean-square
concentrations are in good agreement with experimental data; at 3 m from the ground, the plume mean concentration 200 m downwind
of the source is approximately 2% of the source strength. The numerical data in the near-surface layer (0–50 m from the ground)
correspond particularly well with the wind-tunnel data. Tentative deposition simulations suggest that there seems to be little
difference in the deposition rates of large (1.8 × 10−5 m) and small (3 × 10−6 m) particles in the near-field under the flow conditions considered. 相似文献
