143Nd/144Nd ratios, and Sm and Nd abundances, are reported for particulates from major and minor rivers of the Earth, continental sediments, and aeolian dusts collected over the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Overall, Sm/Nd ratios and Nd isotopic compositions in contemporary continental erosion products vary within the small ranges of 147Sm/144Nd= 0.115 ± 0.01 and143Nd/144Nd= 0.51204 ± 0.0002 (εNd = −11.4 ± 4). The average period of residence in the continental crust is estimated to be1.70 ± 0.35Ga.
These results combined with data from the literature have implications for the age, history, and composition of the sedimentary mass and the continental crust: (1) The average “crustal residence age” of the whole sedimentary mass is about 1.9 Ga. (2) The range of Nd isotope compositions in the continent derived particulate input to the oceans is the same as Atlantic sediments and seawater, but lower than those of the Pacific, demonstrating the importance of Pacific volcanism to Pacific Nd chemistry. (3) The average ratio of Sm/Nd is about 0.19 in the upper continental crust, and has remained so since the early Archean. This precludes the likelihood of major mafic to felsic or felsic to mafic trends in the overall composition of the upper continental crust through Earth history. (4) Sediments appear to be formed primarily by erosion of continental crust having similar Sm/Nd ratios, rather than by mixing of mafic and felsic compositions. (5) The average ratio of 143Nd/144Nd≈ 0.5117 (εNd ≈ −17) in the upper continental crust, assuming its mean age is about 2 Ga. (6) The uniformity of the SmNd isotopic systematics in river and aeolian particulates primarily reflects efficient recycling of old sediment by sedimentary processes on a short time scale compared to the amount of time the material has resided in the crust. 相似文献
Methods for the determination of three compound classes, i. e. diaminotoluenes, nitrophenols, and chloroaromatics in groundwater of a former ammunition plant are reported. Diaminotoluenes were extracted by discontinuous liquid/liquid-, nitrophenols by continuous liquid/liquid-extraction using dichloromethane, and chloroaromatics by solid-phase extraction. These compound classes may be analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) or gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) without derivatization or after derivatization with N-methyl-bis(trifluoroacetamide) (MBTFA) or heptafluorobutyric anhydride (HFBA) in the case of diaminotoluenes and HFBA or acetic anhydride in the case of nitrophenols. An atomic emission detector (AED) coupled to a gas chromatograph may be employed for the analysis of chloroaromatics. High selectivity can be achieved using the characteristic wavelengths of chlorine. A variety of these compounds were identified and quantified in a groundwater sample from the former ammunition plant Elsnig (Saxony, Germany). Concentrations were in the lower ppb range. Thus, dichlorobenzenes which may have been used as substituents at the end of World War II could be identified in groundwater samples at this site. 相似文献
Detailed mapping of Tok Island, located in the middle of the East Sea (Sea of Japan), along with lithofacies analysis and K-Ar age determinations reveal that the island is of early to late Pliocene age and comprises eight rock units: Trachyte I, Unit P-I, Unit P-II, Trachyandesite (2.7±0.1 Ma), Unit P-III, Trachyte II (2.7±0.1 Ma), Trachyte III (2.5±0.1 Ma) and dikes in ascending stratigraphic order. Trachyte I is a mixture of coherent trachytic lavas and breccias that are interpreted to be subaqueous lavas and related hyaloclastites. Unit P-I comprises massive and inversely graded basaltic breccias which resulted from subaerial gain flows and subaqueous debris flows. A basalt clast from the unit, derived from below Trachyte I, has an age of 4.6±0.4 Ma. Unit P-II is composed of graded and stratified lapilli tuffs with the characteristics of proximal pyroclastic surge deposits. The Trachyandesite is a massive subaerial lava ponded in a volcano-tectonic depression, probably a summit crater. A pyroclastic sequence containing flattened scoria clasts (Unit P-III) and a small volume subaerial lava (Trachyte II) occur above the Trachyandesite, suggesting resumption of pyroclastic activity and lava effusion. Afterwards, shallow intrusion of magma occurred, producing Trachyte III and trachyte dikes. The eight rock units provide an example of the changing eruptive and depositional processes and resultant succession of lithofacies as a seamount builds up above sea level to form an island volcano: Trachyte I represents a wholly subaqueous and effusive stage; Units P-I and P-II represent Surtseyan and Taalian eruptive phases during an explosive transitional (subaqueous to emergent) stage; and the other rock units represent later subaerial effusive and explosive stages. Reconstruction of volcano morphology suggests that the island is a remnant of the south-western crater rim of a volcano the vent of which lies several hundred meters to the north-east. 相似文献
The steady-state dynamic responses of both flexible and rigid massless foundations with complex geometries on layered media are studied by the finite layer method. The discussion covers both the horizontal and vertical responses including the rocking mode of vibration. The effect of various parameters, namely, the size of the domain, the number of harmonic terms and the material damping of the soil media, on the convergence and accuracy of the results is investigated. Non-homogeneous soil profiles are treated as a matter of course. The results obtained are compared with solutions by other theoretical methods. 相似文献
Mantle-derived helium has a substantial primordial component and is readily distinguished from radiogenic “crustal” He by its isotopic composition. For some years it has been known to be escaping at mid-ocean ridges and more recently it has been shown to be escaping through the continental lithosphere in tectonically active areas, particularly those undergoing extension or volcanism. The C/3He value observed in ocean ridge basalts and continental gases that contain only mantle He, is close to 109. This is believed to be a typical value for the upper mantle. Other continental gases have ratios that vary widely and are diluted with crustal carbon. The ratio C/4He decreases with time through the production of radiogenic4He, and depends on the C/(U + Th) value. Departures from the average may result from exceptional concentrations of U and Th or from C/He fractionation. There is circumstantial evidence for a steady-state flux of He through the continents that may be estimated from He accumulations in lakes and aquifers. The mantle component of such fluxes is calculated from their3He content. If the mantle component is accompanied by C in the proportion indicated above, and extensional areas make up as little as 10% of the crust at any one time, then about 10% of the present inventory of crustal C would have been added to the crust every Ga by this means. C/K values for the crust and mantle are today very similar, and K may therefore scale as C. K/U and K/Th vary within narrow limits and they may scale with C also. The most plausible means of scavenging He from the mantle is by partial melting: He is expected to enter the first few percent of liquid formed, and the loss of mantle He and C at the surface is associated with the emplacement of basaltic bodies in the lower crust carrying K, U and Th. Some limits are placed on the thickness of basalt added in extensional areas.Mantle-derived CO2 has often been invoked as a means of dehydrating continental crust to produce granulites. However, the amounts of CO2, estimated from mantle He fluxes, entering the crust in those active tectonic areas studied so far appears too small to produce dehydration on a regional scale. The addition of mantle-derived material to the crust in extensional zones is a first-order crustal growth process the importance of which has previously been underestimated. 相似文献
The tolerance level of the fertilizer NPK for the freshwater siluroid Mystus M. vittatus (BL .) and histopathological changes in the gill of this fish against two concentrations of NPK were investigated. It was found that at 400 ppm (24 h) mortality in the fish started, and at 700 ppm (96 h) all the fish died. Hence the concentration of NPK at 400 ppm was taken as an experimental concentration for this fish. Curling towards the upperside in the secondary lamellae resulting in the joining with each other and profuse mucus secretion and subsequent death of 40% of the fish (96 h) were observed. At 700 ppm (96 h) NPK, which is far higher than the highest tolerance limit of the fish, all the fish died. Profuse mucus secretion, formation of subepithelial spaces, sloughing of epithelial layer, leaving only the rows of pilaster cells, resulting in the death of the fish, were observed. The mortality of the fish was due to asphyxiation and damage in the gill tissues resulting in the alteration in the respiratory and osmoregulatory metabolism. 相似文献
The gonads of spawning Mystus vittatus exposed for 96 h to the LC50-96 h dose (i.e. 550 ppm) of NPK, the agricultural fertilizer, were biochemically analysed for their carbohydrate content. The glucose and glycogen contents of the spawning fish were found to be lowered significantly, and the total carbohydrate and lactic acid contents altered insignificantly, under the pollutional stress. The stressed fish also exhibited the presence of some additional free sugars within their gonads. 相似文献
