A terrestrial ecosystem model (Sim-CYCLE) was driven by multiple climate projections to investigate uncertainties in predicting the interactions between global environmental change and the terrestrial carbon cycle. Sim-CYCLE has a spatial resolution of 0.5°, and mechanistically evaluates photosynthetic and respiratory CO2 exchange. Six scenarios for atmospheric-CO2 concentrations in the twenty-first century, proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, were considered. For each scenario, climate projections by a coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation model (AOGCM) were used to assess the uncertainty due to socio-economic predictions. Under a single CO2 scenario, climate projections with seven AOGCMs were used to investigate the uncertainty stemming from uncertainty in the climate simulations. Increases in global photosynthesis and carbon storage differed considerably among scenarios, ranging from 23 to 37% and from 24 to 81 Pg C, respectively. Among the AOGCM projections, increases ranged from 26 to 33% and from 48 to 289 Pg C, respectively. There were regional heterogeneities in both climatic change and carbon budget response, and different carbon-cycle components often responded differently to a given environmental change. Photosynthetic CO2 fixation was more sensitive to atmospheric CO2, whereas soil carbon storage was more sensitive to temperature. The in situ measurements were conducted to 900° C in vacuum (10-4 to 10-5 torr) and to 600° C in air using synchrotron radiation (SR) at Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL). Summary Stress concentration at the bottom of a borehole due to the corners with small radius of curvature in an axial section and
its effect on the azimuth of breakout was studied. To this end, a 3-D finite element analysis was conducted and the stress
around the borehole was examined for boreholes arbitrarily oriented to three principal axes of remote stress. Results show
that, in the case of high strength rock, compressive failure resulting in spalling of a borehole may occur only at the bottom
of the borehole. The spalling can occur continuously with drilling, and results in continuous spalling with depth, i.e., a
breakout. This type of breakout tends to form on one side of the borehole and its orientation is approximately perpendicular
to the orientation of standard breakouts, inferred from the stress concentration due to the cylindrical shape of the borehole. 相似文献

During surveillance on the toxicity of invertebrates such as bivalves inhabiting the coasts of Hiroshima Bay in 2001 and 2002, the carnivorous gastropod rapa whelk Rapana venosa collected in the estuary of Nikoh River, was found to contain toxins which showed paralytic actions in mice; the maximum toxicities (as paralytic shellfish poison, PSP) were 4.2 MU/g (May 2001) and 11.4 MU/g (April 2002). Their total toxicities were 224 and 206 MU/viscera of one specimen throughout the monitoring period. Attempts were made to identify the toxic principle in the gastropod. The viscera were extracted with 80% ethanol acidified with acetic acid, followed by defatting with dichloromethane. The aqueous layer obtained was treated with activated charcoal and then applied to a Sep-Pak C18 cartridge. The unbound toxic fraction was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography techniques. The gastropod toxin was rather unexpectedly identified as PSP. It was comprised of high toxic component (gonyautoxin-3; GTX3, GTX2, saxitoxin; STX) as the major components, which accounted for approximately 91 mol% of all components along with C1 and C2, which are N-sulfocarbamoyl derivatives. Judging from their toxin patterns, it is suggested that the PSP toxification mechanism of the gastropod that PSP toxins produced by phytoplankton such as Alexandrium tamarense, are transferred to and accumulated in plankton feeders such as the short-necked clam, and then transferred to this carnivorous rapa whelk R. venosa through predation. 相似文献

During November 2000–June 2002, both direct current measurements from deployment of a line of five moorings and repeated CTD
observations were conducted along the Oyashio Intensive observation line off Cape Erimo (OICE). All the moorings were installed
above the inshore-side slope of the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench. Before calculating the absolute volume transports, we compared
vertical velocity differences of relative geostrophic velocities with those of the measured velocities. Since both the vertical
velocity differences concerned with the middle three moorings were in good agreement, the flows above the continental slope
are considered to be in thermal wind balance. We therefore used the current meter data of these three moorings, selected among
all five moorings, to estimate the absolute volume transports of the Oyashio referred to the current meter data. As a result,
we estimated that the southwestward absolute volume transports in 0–1000 db are 0.5–12.8 × 106 m3/sec and the largest transport is obtained in winter, January 2001. The Oyashio absolute transports in January 2001, crossing
the OICE between 42°N and 41°15′ N from the surface to near the bottom above the continental slope, is estimated to be at
least 31 × 106 m3/sec.

An observation line along the TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) ground track 060 was set to estimate the Oyashio transport. We call this
line the OICE (Oyashio Intensive observation line off-Cape Erimo) along which we have been conducting repeated hydrographic
observations and maintaining mooring systems. T/P derived sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) was compared with velocity and
transport on OICE. Although the decorrelation scale of SSHA was estimated at about 80–110 km in the Oyashio region, the SSHA
also contains horizontal, small-scale noise, which was eliminated using a Gaussian filter. In the comparison between the SSHA
difference across two selected points and the subsurface velocity measured by a moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP),
the highest correlation (0.92) appeared when the smoothing scale was set at 30 km with the two points as near as possible.
For the transport in the Oyashio region, the geostrophic transport between 39°30′ N and 42°N was compared with the SSHA difference
across the same two points. In this case the highest correlations (0.79, 0.88 and 0.93) occurred when the smoothing scale
was set at 38, 6 and 9 km for reference levels of 1000, 2000 and 3000 db, respectively. The annual mean transport was estimated
as 9.46 Sv in the 3000 db reference case. The Oyashio transport time series was derived from the T/P SSHA data, and the transports
are smaller than that estimated from the Sverdrup balance in 1994–1996 and larger than that in 1997–2000. This difference
is consistent with baroclinic response to wind stress field.

This study is an attempt to correlate the graphitization process of carbonaceous matter during metamorphism with metamorphic grade. Graphitization can be parameterized using crystal structure and chemical and isotopic compositions. The extent of graphitization could be characterized mainly by temperature, duration of metamorphism and rock composition. We compared the graphitization trends for two metamorphic terrains, a contact aureole of the Kasuga area and a regional metamorphic terrain of high-temperature/low pressure type of the Ryoke metamorphic terrain in Northern Kiso area, Central Japan, and for two different lithologies (carbonate and pelite), using X-ray diffractogram, DTA-TG analysis, and chemical and stable isotope analyses. During contact metamorphism, graphitization and carbon isotopic exchange reactions proceeded simultaneously in pelitic and carbonate rocks. The decreases in basal spacing d(002) of the carbonaceous matter in carbonate rocks is greatly accelerated at temperatures higher than about 400° C. Furthermore, carbon isotopic ratios of graphite in carbonate rocks also change to 13C-enriched values implying exchange with carbonates. The beginning of this enrichment of 13C in the carbonaceous matter coincides with an abrupt increase of the graphitization processes. Carbon isotopic shifting up to 5 in pelites could be observed as metamorphic temperature increased probably by about 400° C. Carbonaceous matter in pelitic rocks is sometimes a mixture of poorly crystallized organic matter and well-crystallized graphite detritus. DTA-TG analysis is an effective tool for the distinction of detrital graphitic material. Two sources for the original carbon isotopic composition of carbonaceous matter in pelites in the Kasuga contact aureole can be distinguished, about-28 and-24 regardless of the presence of detrital graphite, and were mainly controlled by depositional environment of the sediments. Graphitization in limestones and pelitic rocks in regional metamorphism proceeds further than in a contact aureole. In the low-temperature range, the differences in extent of graphitization between the two metamorphic regions is large. However, at temperatures higher than 600° C, the extent of graphitization in both regions is indistinguishable. The degree of graphitization is different in limestones and pelitic rocks from the Ryoke metamorphic terrain. We demonstrate that the graphitization involves a progressive re-construction process of the crystal structure. The sequence of the first appearance of crystal inter planar spacing correlates with the metamorphic grade and indicates the crystal growth of three-dimensional structured graphite. 相似文献

Data on the mechanisms of mantle phase transformations have come primarily from studies of analogue systems reacted experimentally at low pressures. In order to study transformation mechanisms in Mg2SiO4 at mantle pressures, forsterite () has been reacted in the stability field of -phase, at 15 GPa and temperatures up to 900° C, using a multianvil split-sphere apparatus. Transmission electron microscope studies of samples reacted for times ranging from 0.25–5.0 h show that forsterite transforms to -phase by an incoherent nucleation and growth mechanism involving nucleation on olivine grain boundaries. This mechanism and the resultant microstructures are very similar to those observed at much lower pressures in analogue systems (Mg2GeO4 and Ni2SiO4) as the result of the olivine to spinel () transformation. Metastable spinel () also forms from Mg2SiO4 olivine at 15 GPa, in addition to -phase, by the incoherent nucleation and growth mechanism. With time, the spinel progressively transforms to the stable -phase. After 1 h, spinels exhibit a highly striated microstructure along {110} and electron diffraction patterns show streaking parallel to [110] which indicates a high degree of structural disorder. High resolution imaging shows that the streaking results from thin lamellae of -phase intergrown with the spinel. The two phases have the orientation relationship [001]//[001] and [010]//[110] so that the quasi cubic-close-packed oxygen sublattices are continuous between both phases. These microstructures are similar to those observed in shocked meteorites and show that spinel transforms to -phase by a martensitic (shear) mechanism. There is also evidence that the mechanism changes to one involving diffusion-controlled growth at conditions close to equilibrium. 相似文献
