Ruby-bearing marbles from Nangimali, in the Azad-Kashmir, Pakistan, contain, besides phengite, different mica intergrowths: paragonite, phlogopite and aspidolite (sodium phlogopite). Both phlogopites, intimately linked and coexisting with paragonite, are fluorine rich, contrary to phengite and paragonite. F-enriched aspidolite is described for the first time. Phengite is either associated with phlogopite or could be isolated. The presence of aspidolite in the ruby-bearing marbles, together with other arguments such as salt solid inclusions and presence of anhydrite, suggest the implication of evaporites in the genesis of gem corundums. Marble-hosted ruby deposits represent the most important source of colored gemstones from Central and South East Asia. These deposits are located in the Himalayan mountain belt which developed during Tertiary collision of the Indian plate northward into the Eurasian plate. They are spatially related to granitoid intrusions and are contained in platform carbonates series that underwent high-grade metamorphism. All occurrences are located close to major tectonic features formed during Himalayan orogenesis, directly in suture zones in the Himalayas, or in shear zones that guided extrusion of the Indochina block after the collision in South East Asia. Ar–Ar dating of micas syngenetic with ruby and U–Pb dating of zircon included in ruby gives evidence that these deposits formed during Himalayan orogenesis, and the ages document the extensional tectonics that were active, from Afghanistan to Vietnam, between the Oligocene and the Pliocene.The petrography shows that ruby-bearing marbles formed in the amphibolite facies (T = 610 to 790 °C and P ~ 6 kbar). A fluid inclusion study defines the conditions of gem ruby formation during the retrograde metamorphic path (620 < T < 670 °C and 2.6 < P < 3.3 kbar) for the deposits of Jegdalek, Hunza and northern Vietnam.Whole rock analyses of non-ruby-bearing marbles indicate that they contain enough aluminum and chromiferous elements to produce all the ruby crystals that they contain. In addition, (C, O)-isotopic analyses of carbonates from the marbles lead to the conclusion that the marbles acted as a metamorphic closed fluid system that were not infiltrated by externally-derived fluids. The carbon isotopic composition of graphite in marbles reveals that it is of organic origin and that it exchanged C-isotopes with the carbonates during metamorphism. Moreover, the O-isotopic composition of ruby was buffered by metamorphic CO2 released during devolatilisation of marble and the H-isotopic composition of mica is consistent with a metamorphic origin for water in equilibrium with the micas. The (C, O, H)-isotopic compositions of minerals associated with marble-hosted ruby are all in agreement with the hypothesis, drawn from the unusual chemistry of CO2–H2S–COS–S8–AlO(OH)-bearing fluids contained in fluid inclusions, that gem ruby formed at P ~ 3 kbar and 620 < T < 670 °C, during thermal reduction of evaporite by organic matter, at high temperature-medium pressure metamorphism of platform carbonates during the Tertiary India–Asia collision. The carbonates were enriched in Al- and chromiferous-bearing detrital minerals, such as clay minerals that were deposited on the platform with the carbonates, and in organic matter. Ruby formed during the retrograde metamorphic path, mainly by destabilization of muscovite or spinel. The metamorphic fluid system was rich in CO2 released from devolatilisation of carbonates, and in fluorine, chlorine and boron released by molten salts (NaCl, KCl, CaSO4). Evaporites are key to explaining the formation of these deposits. Molten salts mobilized in situ Al and metal transition elements contained in marbles, leading to crystallization of ruby.  相似文献

After the first release of Hipparcos data, Feast & Catchpole gave a new value for the zero-point of the visual Cepheid period–luminosity relation, based on trigonometric parallaxes. Because of the large uncertainties on these parallaxes, the way in which individual measurements are weighted is of crucial importance. We therefore conclude that the choice of the best weighting system can be aided by a Monte Carlo simulation. On the basis of such a simulation, it is shown that (i) a cut ‐off in π or in σ π π introduces a strong bias; (ii) the zero-point is more stable when only the brightest Cepheids are used; and (iii) the Feast & Catchpole weighting gives the best zero-point and the lowest dispersion. After correction, the adopted visual period–luminosity relation is 〈 M V 〉=−2.77 log  P −1.44±0.05. Moreover, we extend this study to the photometric I band (Cousins) and obtain 〈 M I 〉=−3.05 log  P −1.81±0.09.  相似文献

We present in this paper an exhaustive compilation of all published data of extragalactic Cepheids. We have checked every light curve in order to characterize the different types of Cepheid and detect potential overtone pulsators, or to estimate the quality of the data. This compilation of about 3000 photometric measurements will constitute a very useful tool for astronomers involved for instance in the extragalactic distance scale.  相似文献

Ecological processes driving the oxygen budget were investigated in the downstream part of the Seine River and its estuary. Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton production were measured along longitudinal profiles (11 to 17 stations) in a range of low discharges from 300 m3 s−1 in 1993 and 1995 to 140 m3 s−1 in 1996. Values representative of the water column were based on investigations carried out during two tidal cycles. Net primary production was invariably greatest in the freshwater estuary, from Poses to Rouen (from 500 to 1,000 μg C l−1 d−1 between PK 202 and 240) and decreased sharply downstream (from 10 to 25 μg c l−1 d−1 between PK 250 and 310). This decrease was mainly due to the deterioration of the light conditions with the increase in depth and suspended matter concentrations. Heterotrophic activity was maximum in the reach where primary production declined. Judging by the production:respiration ratio (P:R), the system appeared clearly heterotrophic in the Seine River immediately downstream of the Paris region due to high allochthonous organic pollution by the incompletely treated Parisian effluents and in the part of the estuary characterized by intense degradation of autochthonous material. Because the effluents are not treated by a nitrification step, the oxygen consumption due to nitrification was much higher than expected from the P:R ratio. Oxidation of ammonium represented an oxygen consumption of between 1 and 14 g O2 m−2 d−1, almost equalling the sum of heterotrophic respirations that were barely balanced by photosynthesis. The reaeration flux at the water-atmosphere interface was deduced from the calculations and a reaeration coefficient was estimated.  相似文献

Dreissena larval fluxes were studied in the lower stretch of the Seine River in 1996–1998. Fluxes reached 150×1012 ind d−1, representing a larval concentration of 5,000 ind l−1 in the Seine estuary. We showed that a sampling frequency with a 3-d interval allowed us to adequately estimate the annual production of larvae. The water residence time in the Seine River and estuary is sufficient for theDreissena larvae to complete their cycle and settlement. High abundance of the larvae in the plankton samples from the Seine River and its estuary showed the existence of a large community of benthic adults, known to be powerful filter-feeders. The progenitor population and the geographical extent of the adultDreissena were estimated from cohort analyses of the planktonic larvae. The maximum density ofDreissena was found in the highly channelized part of the estuary (up to 4,500 ind m−2). Estimated values were compared with concentration of mussels in the benthic traps and samples. Calculated filtration rates of benthic mussels were compared with those of larvae at different stages and with filtration of the zooplankton community. The impact of theDreissena was much higher than that of zooplankton; the filtration of the larvae exceeded that of adults during short periods of maximum larval emission.  相似文献

The behavior of dissolved cadmium (Cd) in the Danube estuary was investigated through field sampling and mixing experiments using Danube River water and Black Sea water. The experiments were performed by mixing these two end-member waters in various proportions, with the addition of stable or radioactive Cd to the freshwater Danube end-member prior to the mixing. The release of Cd that resulted in maximum concentrations under field conditions was well simulated by mixing experiments. The experimental results were modeled assuming that the release of Cd was the sum of the contribution of physical effects resulting from dilution effects and the contribution of chemical effects resulting from dissolved Cd-complex formation (and isotopic exchange when concerned). In the absence of dissolved Cd-complexing ligands, the release of Cd due to the dilution of the particulate phase during mixing could explain part of the maximum concentrations observed in field conditions. Kinetic effects were established by comparing the theoretical and measured contribution of chemical effects resulting from dissolved Cd-complex formation. The non-equilibrium state observed during the mixing experiment suggested the presence of particulate labile Cd that was not easily mobilized. All these features supported the hypothesis that Cd released in estuaries is controlled both by the dilution of the particulate phase and by kinetic competitive complexation between particulate ligands (covering a large spectrum of nature and strength) and dissolved ligands.  相似文献
