An accelerometer array at Pacoima Dam with three locations along the base and abutments recorded ground motion from a magnitude 4.3 earthquake on 13 January 2001. These records present an opportunity to study spatial nonuniformity for the motion in a canyon. Topographic amplification is characterized by ratios of response spectral displacement between locations, and seismic wave travel times are studied using cross‐correlation functions to obtain delays. Results of the analysis of the 2001 earthquake records are used to generate ground motion for the 1994 Northridge earthquake to replace records that were not able to be fully digitized. The ground motion generated for the Northridge earthquake is used as input to a finite element model of Pacoima Dam. The response of the model is consistent with observations of Pacoima Dam after the Northridge earthquake. Comparison of the response due to nonuniform input with the response due to uniform input demonstrates the importance of accounting for spatial nonuniformity because of the significance that the pseudostatic component has for the response to nonuniform input.  Four Late Holocene pyroclastic units composed of block and ash flows, surges, ashfalls of silicic andesite and dacite composition, and associated lahar deposits represent the recent products emitted by domes on the upper part of Nevado Cayambe, a large ice-capped volcano 60 km northeast of Quito. These units are correlated stratigraphically with fallout deposits (ash and lapilli) exposed in a peat bog. Based on 14C dating of the peat and charcoal, the following ages were obtained: ∼910 years BP for the oldest unit, 680–650 years BP for the second, and 400–360 years BP for the two youngest units. Moreover, the detailed tephrochronology observed in the peat bog and in other sections implies at least 21 volcanic events during the last 4000 years, comprising three principal eruptive phases of activity that are ∼300, 800, and 900 years in duration and separated by repose intervals of 600–1000 years. The last phase, to which the four pyroclastic units belong, has probably not ended, as suggested by an eruption in 1785–1786. Thus, Cayambe, previously thought to have been dormant for a long time, should be considered active and potentially dangerous to the nearby population of the Interandean Valley. The spring of 1997 has represented a stable period of operation for the joint University of Tromsø/University of Saskatchewan MF radar, being between refurbishment and upgrades. We examine the horizontal winds from the February to June inclusive and also include estimates of energy dissipation rates derived from signal fading times and presented as upper limits on the turbulent energy dissipation rate, . Here we address the periodicity in the dynamics of the upper mesosphere for time scales from hours to one month. Thus, we are able to examine the changes in the spectral signature of the mesospheric dynamics during the transition from winter to summer states.  相似文献

This paper examines the prospects for Albanian rural diversification with particular reference to rural tourism. In the early 1990s, tourism was identified by the Albanian government and Western development consultants as a likely vehicle for an appropriate and sustainable development strategy, given the relative wealth generated by international tourism in neighbouring Greece, Italy and Croatia. Pressure has been exerted by commercial developers for mass coastal tourism and permission for around 40 new tourist development has been granted. But Albania embraces a considerable wealth of natural and cultural heritage, which provides opportunities for the development of small scale rural tourism carefully integrated into the local economy with respect to organic farming, quality wine production and sustainable fishing. But sensitive social integration is vital where it is difficult to identify rural communities where there is a conspicuous absence of local consensus. The resurgence of traditional social systems and the empowerment of local actors in cases where organised crime has taken root pose major problems for rural diversification. Results of freeze-thaw simulations on three large blocks of quartz-micaschist are presented. Three types of water to ice phase change were identified from temperature and ultrasonic measurements. It is suggested that the type of phase change results from a particular combination of rock moisture content, solute concentration, freeze amplitude, and rate of fall of temperature. The temperature at which ice thawed inside the rock (?0.7 to ?1.9°C) was also found, and this indicates the possibility of freeze-thaw effects without positive temperatures. Approximately 80 per cent of the water that will freeze under natural conditions, in the Maritime Antarctic environment under study, appears to have done so by ?6°.  相似文献

Two major swarms of early Proterozoic (ca. 2.1 Ga) basic dykes occur within the Archaean craton of southern West Greenland. One swarm comprises ophitic and sub-ophitic tholeiitic dolerites, while the other (the BN dyke swarm) constitutes mainly norites in which pyroxenes and olivine are enclosed by plagioclase oikocrysts. The close geochemical similarity between a quenched norite and the coarser-grained varieties indicates that the composition of the latter type has not been significantly modified by crystal accumulation. The BN dykes are geochemically distinctive, most having high MgO (ca. 16%), Cr and Ni contents in conjunction with relatively high SiO2, light rare-earth (REE) and large ion lithophile (LIL) element concentrations. The texture, mineral chemistry and petrochemistry of the quenched noritic dyke all bear strong resemblances to those features in modern boninitic lavas. The BN dykes also correspond to proposed parental liquids of the Bushveld Complex and other major layered basic igneous intrusions. The two dyke swarms are petrogenetically distinct. The tholeiitic dolerites were derived from a relatively undepleted, primordial mantle while the noritic dykes originated from a metasomatized harzburgitic source. The wide-spread distribution of similar Proterozoic intrusions suggests crustal underplating by harzburgitic mantle on a world-wide scale at this time.  相似文献

Hallmark tourist events are major fairs, expositions, cultural and sporting events of international status which are held on either a regular or a one-off basis. A primary function of the hallmark event is to provide the host community with an opportunity to secure high prominence in the tourism market place. However, international or regional prominence may be gained with significant social and environmental costs.Several important features emerge from an examination of the research on hallmark events. First, there is no agreed upon definition of events. Second, major methodological weaknesses emerge in the study of hallmark events. Third, the majority of research is economic in orientation with relatively little attention being paid to the important social and physical impacts of such events.The paper concludes by noting the general neglect of hallmark tourism events by researchers and the urgent need for further theoretical and empirical studies.  相似文献

Preferential water loss from synthetic fluid inclusions   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A fundamental question in most fluid inclusion studies is whether inclusions behave as compositionally closed systems after trapping, and, thus, represent samples of the fluid phase(s) present in the system at the time of their formation. This question was addressed in high-temperature laboratory experiments with synthetic fluid inclusions in quartz and it was found that at 825°C the inclusions exhibited open-system behavior with respect to water. Synthetic salt-water fluid inclusions in quartz were reequilibrated for 12 hours to 35 days at 825° C in a dry argon atmosphere under 1.5 kbar confining pressure. These conditions created initial internal overpressures (P int> P conf) of 1.5–4 kbar in the inclusions and differential water fugacities in the same sense i.e., fH2OfH2O. After 108 hours of reequilibration, preferential water loss had resulted in salinity increases as large as 22 wt% salt (e.g., from 57 to 79 wt% NaCl, as determined from measured temperatures of salt dissolution). Also, following reequilibration, a strong inverse correlation between salinity and inclusion volume was observed, and this trend became more pronounced with increasing reequilibration time. These observations, together with a lack of evidence for selective H2O removal via hydration reactions, suggest that water loss occurred by a diffusion-related mechanism. Fluxes of 4x10-11 g/cm2-s and diffusion coefficients on the order of 10-9 cm2/s are calculated for water loss from the inclusions. The calculated H2O diffusion coefficient is consistent with the determination of Blacic (1981) derived from hydrolytic weakening experiments, but is much larger than the value obtained by Giletti and Yund (1984) for volume diffusion of oxygen in isotope exchange experiments. These observations suggest that the mechanism of water loss from our synthetic fluid inclusions may have been pipe diffusion along dislocations, subgrain boundaries or other structural defects rather than bulk volume diffusion.The results of this study are relevant to the interpretation of fluid inclusions in quartz from several natural high-temperature environments where water fugacities of included and ambient fluids are known to have evolved along separate paths over geologic time.  相似文献

A study of the solar spectrum near helium 10 830 Å has shown that, where the line is very weak, the anomalous ratio of the two components is due almost certainly to faint blends. The centre-limb intensity variation over supergranule centres is in good agreement with an optically-thin law. The line is stronger over supergranule boundaries, and the ratio of the two components can be understood only if the absorbing elements have been resolved incompletely (as is probable); using centre-limb intensity variations, we have been unable to distinguish between unresolved horizontal platelets or inclined slabs.The integrated absorption in 10 830 Å over supergranule centres is double that at the boundaries. An analysis of the extension of 10 830 Å beyond the limb has failed to reveal the relative contributions from these two regions or their variations with height (though the supergranule-centre emission should be located relatively low). Line profiles in 10 830 Å, hydrogen Pa and Caii 8542 Å indicate that, out to at least 5000 km, line broadening is effectively non-thermal, with horizontal rms velocities of about 20 km s–1.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献
