Some connections between aerosols, atmospheric transport, and relative humidity are investigated based on measurements at Basic Environmental Observatory (BEO) station, peak Musala (2,925 masl) for the period January 2009–January 2010. Data are chosen at 0:00 and 12:00 GMT every day. Main methods employed in this research are statistical—nonparametric tests of Mann–Whitney and Spearman. The main conclusion is that greater aerosol load at peak Musala is connected with transport of air masses from north to east horizon quarters. Bigger particles with longer lifetimes come from there. Air coming from the south horizon quarter is aerosol clearer. Relative humidity shows opposite distribution—higher values for transport from south horizon quarter. Correlation between this parameter and aerosols is negative with significant but small value. Distribution of blue, green, and red scattering and backscattering coefficients is similar to distribution of total aerosol concentration. Correlations between scattering and backscattering coefficients and total aerosol concentration are significant and positive. Courses of total aerosol concentration; diameter of particles with maximum concentration; and blue, green, and red scattering and backscattering coefficients have summer maximum and winter minimum. Diurnal course of total aerosol concentration in the two main seasons, winter (January) and summer (July), has day maximum and night minimum. Aerosols at peak Musala are predominantly of transparent or translucent type. The calculation of Ångström exponent α is more precise by using scattering coefficients. The nephelometers data could successfully characterize the haziness of the atmosphere above peak Musala. 相似文献

We present a revised lithostratigraphy for the Voltaian Supergroup of Ghana, based on a review of existing literature, interpretations of remotely sensed data and reconnaissance field survey of the Volta Basin. These strata thicken eastwards, to a maximum of between 5 and 6 km adjacent to the Pan-African Dahomeyide orogen. They began to accumulate some time after about 1000 Ma, along the margin of an epicontinental sea. Initial sedimentation, comprising the age-equivalent Kwahu and Bombouaka Groups, shows a cyclical mode of deposition controlled by eustatic changes in sea-level that produced a range of nearshore marine, littoral and terrestrial environments. 相似文献

Based on surface and borehole information, together with pre-existing regional and local interpretations, a 7,150 square kilometre Raster Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the bedrock surface of northern Switzerland was constructed using a 25 m cell size. This model represents a further important step in the understanding of Quaternary sediment distribution and is open to a broad field of application and analysis, including hydrogeological, geotechnical and geophysical studies as well as research in the field of Pleistocene landscape evolution. An analysis of the overdeepened valleys in the whole model area and, more specifically in the Reuss area, shows that, in most cases, overdeepening is restricted to the areas covered by the Last Glaciation Maximum (LGM). However, at various locations relatively narrow overdeepened valleys outreach the tongue basins and the LGM ice shield limits. Therefore, an earlier and further-reaching glacial event has probably contributed significantly to the overdeepening of these valleys. No significant overdeepening has been identified downstream of Böttstein (Aare) and Kaiserstuhl (Rhine), although the ice extended considerably further downstream, at least during the most extensive glaciation. Except for the bedrock between Brugg and Böttstein, no overdeepened valleys are found significantly north of the outcrop of Mesozoic limestone of the Folded and Tabular Jura. A detailed analysis of the Reuss area shows that the Lake and Suhre valleys are separated from the Emmen—Gisikon Reuss valley basin by a significant bedrock barrier. The individual bedrock valleys are divided into several sub-basins, indicating a multiphase evolution of the valleys. Some of the swells or barriers separating the sub-basins coincide with known late LGM retreat stages. In the Suhre valley, an old fluvial valley floor with restricted overdeepened sections is documented. 相似文献

The deposits of the Early Jurassic in northern Switzerland accumulated in the relatively slowly subsiding transition zone
between the southwestern part of the Swabian basin and the eastern part of the Paris basin under fully marine conditions.
Terrigenous fine-grained deposits dominate, but calcarenitic and phosphorit-rich strata are intercalated. The total thickness
varies between 25 and 50 m. In the eastern and central parts of N Switzerland, sediments Sinemurian in age constitute about
90% of the total thickness. To the West, however, in the Mont Terri area, Pliensbachian and Toarcian deposits form 70% of
the total thickness. Stratigraphic gaps occur on a local to regional scale throughout N Switzerland. Such hiatus comprise
a subzone to a stage in time. With respect to lithology and fossil content, the Early Jurassic deposits in northern Switzerland
are similar to those in SW Germany. Nonetheless, an exact stratigraphic correlation is hardly possible, particulary in the
southern and southwestern Folded Jura where distinct facies changes occur over short distances. Revised existing and new litho-
and biostratigraphic data form the base to refine the stratigraphic subdivision of the deposits that have been informally
called “Lias”. The name Staffelegg Formation is suggested and defined as the mapping unit for the Early Jurassic. The Staffelegg
Formation is introduced for Early Jurassic sediments in northern Switzerland between the Doubs River and Mt. Weissenstein
in the west and the Randen Hills located north of the city of Schaffhausen in the east. The Staffelegg Formation starts within
the Planorbis zone of the Hettangian. The upper boundary to the overlying Aalenian Opalinus-Ton is diachronous. The lithostratigraphic
names previously in use have been replaced by new ones, in accordance within the rules of lithostratigraphic nomenclature.
The Staffelegg Formation comprises 11 members and 9 beds. Several of these beds are important correlation horizons in terms
of allostratigraphy. Some of them correspond to strata or erosional unconformities encountered in the Swabian realm, some
of them can be correlated with strata in the Paris basin. The facies transition to the Paris basin is expressed by introduction

A time series of K3 spectroheliograms taken at the Coimbra Observatory exhibits an erupting loop on the east limb on July 9, 1982 in active region NOAA 3804. The Goddard SMM Hard X-Ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) observations taken during this period reveal a hard X-ray flare occurring just before the loop eruption is observed, and SMS-GOES soft X-ray observations reveal a strong long-duration event (LDE) following the impulsive phase of the flare. A Solwind coronagram exhibits a powerful coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the erupting loop. H flare and prominence observations as well as centimeter and decimeter radio observations of the event are also reviewed. A large, north–south-oriented quiescent prominence reported within the upper part of the CME expansion region may play a role in the eruption as well. The spatial and temporal correlations among these observations are examined in the light of two different current models for prominence eruption and CME activation: (1) The CME is triggered by the observed hard X-ray impulsive flare. (2) The CME is not triggered by a flare, and the observed soft X-ray flare is an LDE due to reconnection within the CME bubble. It is concluded that this event is probably of a mixed type that combines characteristics of models (1) and (2). The July 9 event is then compared to three other energetic CME and flare eruptions associated with the same active-region complex, all occurring in the period July 9 through September 4, 1982. It is noted that these four energetic events coincide with the final evolutionary phase of a long-lasting active-region complex, which is discussed in a companion paper (Bumba, Garcia, and Jordan, 1997). Measuring land-use, land-cover change in biodiverse, tropical countries is critical for conservation management and sustainable planning because it provides quantifiable data regarding broad environmental changes. This project uses Landsat satellite imagery to document vegetation cover change on Ambergris Caye, Belize, from 2000 to 2017. The close proximity of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System has made Ambergris Caye the most popular tourist destination and economic hub in Belize. As a result, the region has undergone intense commercial and residential development coupled with rapid population growth over the past two decades. Understanding general trends in landscape dynamics is critical for the natural resource–based tourism industry of Belize to continue to thrive. Unsupervised classification methods and a per pixel postclassification comparison were used with Landsat imagery to estimate loss in vegetation cover and increases in urban and barren land. The results indicate a 10.85 percent decrease in vegetation and a 39 percent increase in urban and barren land during the seventeen-year study period with an annual forest loss rate of 0.67 percent per year using a compound interest rate formula. The results of this analysis represent a baseline study of vegetation change on Ambergris Caye to inform management and conservation efforts. 相似文献

A 4-month deployment on Ice Station Weddell (ISW) in the western Weddell Sea yielded over 2000 h of nearly continuous surface-level meteorological data, including eddy-covariance measurements of the turbulent surface fluxes of momentum, and sensible and latent heat. Those data lead to a new parameterization for the roughness length for wind speed, z0, for snow-covered sea ice that combines three regimes: an aerodynamically smooth regime, a high-wind saltation regime, and an intermediate regime between these two extremes where the macroscale or `permanent' roughness of the snow and ice determines z0. Roughness lengths for temperature, zT, computed from this data set corroborate the theoretical model that Andreas published in 1987. Roughness lengths for humidity,zQ, do not support this model as conclusively but are all, on average, within an order of magnitude of its predictions. Only rarely arezTand zQ equal to z0. A series of new radio-continuum (λ=20, 13, 6 and 3 cm) mosaic images focused on the NGC 55 galactic system were produced using archived observational data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array. These new images are both very sensitive (down to rms=33 μJy) and feature high angular resolution (down to <4″). Using these newly created images, 66 previously unidentified discrete sources are identified. Of these sources, 46 were classified as background sources, 11 as H?ii regions and 6 as supernova remnant candidates. This relatively low number of SNR candidates detected coupled with the low number of large H?ii regions is consistent with the estimated low star formation rate of the galaxy at 0.06 M ⊙?year?1. Our spectral index map shows that the core of galaxy appears to have a shallow spectral index between α=?0.2 and ?0.4. This indicates that the core of the galaxy is a region of high thermal radiation output. 相似文献

Simultaneous observations of the slow solar wind off the southeast limb of the Sun were made in May 1999 using optical measurements from the C2 and C3 LASCO coronagraphs on board the SOHO spacecraft and radio-scattering measurements from the MERLIN and EISCAT facilities. The observations show the slow solar wind accelerating outwards from 4.5 solar radii (R), reaching a final velocity of 200–300 km s-1 by 25–30 R. The acceleration profile indicated by these results is more gentle than the average profile seen in earlier LASCO observations of larger scale features, but is within the variation seen in these studies. 相似文献
