Limestone drains are often implemented in the treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD), but when the AMD contains high levels of dissolved Fe their lifetime is dependent on the rate of precipitation of Fe hydroxide on the limestone surface. This study used a small-scale laboratory experiment to define the longevity of a limestone drain by determining the thickness of the Fe coating encapsulating the limestone particles when the system lost its maximum neutralising potential. Synthetic AMD (100 mg/L Fe, pH 4–4.8) was pumped through a column containing limestone particles for 1110 h, when the effluent pH had dropped from a maximum of 6.45–4.9. The decline in neutralisation during the experiment was due to the formation of Fe hydroxide coatings on the limestone grains. These coatings are composed of lepidocrocite/goethite in three distinct layers: an initial thick porous orange layer, overlain by a dense dark brown crust, succeeded by a layer of loosely-bound, porous orange globules. After 744 h, a marked increase in the rate of pH decline occurred, and the system was regarded as having effectively failed. At this time the Fe hydroxide crust effectively encapsulated the limestone grains, forming a diffusion barrier that slowed down limestone dissolution. Between the coating and the limestone substrate was a 60 μm wide void, so that agitation of the limestone sample would readily remove the coating from the limestone surface. 相似文献

Glauconite from eight stratigraphic horizons (Cambrian to Pennsylvanian) in the Llano Uplift, central Texas and two Cretaceous glauconites were analyzed by the Rb-Sr method. Only two untreated samples provide ages in agreement with those anticipated from current best estimates of the geologic time scale. With one exception all the other apparent ages fall short of the estimated age of deposition by as much as 22%. Low ages, the pattern customarily observed, are attributed to postdepositional loss of radiogenic 87Sr from expandable layers by weathering or during diagenesis.Detailed leaching experiments using a variety of reagents were performed to characterize the behavior of glauconite. The most promising treatment, which we recommend as standard procedure in all future studies, is with ammonium acetate which is able to purge the mineral of loosely-bound Rb and Sr while leaving tightly-bound components intact. After appropriate leach, three other Rb-Sr ages were brought into coincidence with their estimated ages of deposition.In contrast an Upper Cambrian glauconite was found to be extremely resistant to further alteration by chemical attack′, providing an age of 429 ± 17 M yr. Although 17% short of the age of deposition, this age is interpreted as the time of a real event: diagenetic recrystallization induced by burial. Comparison of data from four samples indicates that for Paleozoic glauconite, conditions exist in which the Rb-Sr system is less susceptible to mild disturbance than is the K-Ar system. 相似文献

Surface displacements and gravity changes due to volcanic sources are influenced by medium properties. We investigate topographic,
elastic and self-gravitation interaction in order to outline the major factors that are significant in data modelling. While
elastic-gravitational models can provide a suitable approximation to problems of volcanic loading in areas where topographic
relief is negligible, for prominent volcanoes the rough topography could affect deformation and gravity changes to a greater
extent than self-gravitation. This fact requires the selection, depending on local relief, of a suitable model for use in
the interpretation of surface precursors of volcanic activity. We use the three-dimensional Indirect Boundary Element Method
to examine the effects of topography on deformation and gravity changes in models of magma chamber inflation/deflation. Topography
has a significant effect on predicted surface deformation and gravity changes. Both the magnitude and pattern of the geodetic
signals are significantly different compared to half-space solutions. Thus, failure to account for topographic effects in
areas of prominent relief can bias the estimate of volcanic source parameters, since the magnitude and pattern of deformation

Severe droughts in the middle-12th and late-13th centuries appear to have affected Anasazi (pre-Columbian Native American)
populations. During the first drought most of the great houses in the central San Juan Basin were vacated; the second drought
resulted in the abandonment of the Four Corners region. During the first drought, villages may not have been completely abandoned.
The multi-year drought periods probably were characterized by reductions in both winter and summer precipitation. Maize is
dependent on winter precipitation for its germination and initial growth and on summer (monsoonal) precipitation for its continued
growth. Reductions in precipitation are hypothesized to have resulted in low yields of maize, the dietary staple of the Anasazi.
A comparison of historic climate data and tree-ring-based reconstructions of precipitation in the Four Corners region with
tree-ring-based reconstructions of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) indicate
that severe and persistent drought in the Four Corners region occurs when the PDO is negative and the AMO is positive. Historic
climate data from the greater San Juan Basin indicate that a negative PDO is characterized by reductions in both water-year
and summer precipitation, reinforcing the concept that at least some multi-year droughts involved weakening of the summer
monsoon with attendant decreases in the yields of maize. 相似文献

Climate is one factor that determines the potential range of malaria. As such, climate change may work with or against efforts
to bring malaria under control. We developed a model of future climate suitability for stable Plasmodium falciparum malaria transmission in Zimbabwe. Current climate suitability for stable malaria transmission was based on the MARA/ARMA
model of climatic constraints on the survival and development of the Anopheles vector and the Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite. We explored potential future geographic distributions of malaria using 16 projections of climate in 2100.
The results suggest that, assuming no future human-imposed constraints on malaria transmission, changes in temperature and
precipitation could alter the geographic distribution of malaria in Zimbabwe, with previously unsuitable areas of dense human
population becoming suitable for transmission. Among all scenarios, the highlands become more suitable for transmission, while
the lowveld and areas with low precipitation show varying degrees of change, depending on climate sensitivity and greenhouse
gas emission stabilization scenarios, and depending on the general circulation model used. The methods employed can be used

The standard expression of the reaction rate for low-energy, nonresonant nuclear reactions in nondegenerate plasma contains a parameter-dependent integral which in all previous calculations with physical or astrophysical background is considered as not capable of being evaluated in a closed form. So one usually resorts to approximation methods concerning large values of the parameter. At first we point out that CONSUL (1964) has given a series representation of the integral which was identified with a MEIJER 's G-function by MATHAI (1971). Next, in view of a physically more exact determination of the reaction rate formula, especially in connection with calculations concerning stellar energy generation, we consider a more general integral containing the mentioned one as special case and give an approximation-free representation by means of MEIJER 's G-function. The G-function so obtained may be conceived as complex-valued continuation of CONSUL 's series representation of a certain class of integrals contained in the considered one.
