FOUR NEW IRON METEORITE FINDS

Four new irons are described; Buenaventura (IIIB) from Chihuahua, Mexico: mass 114 kg; Denver City (anomalous) from Texas, USA: mass 26.1 kg; Kinsella (IIIB) from Alberta, Canada: mass 3.7 kg; and Tacoma (IA) from Washington, USA: mass 17 g. Denver City is unique, i.e., not related to any other known iron. Tacoma is the smallest iron meteorite recorded. All were purchased for the UCLA collection following a publicity drive for new meteorites     

A model combining the polar and the sector structured solar magnetic fields

A phenomenological model of the interplay between the polar magnetic fields of the Sun and the solar sector structure is discussed. Current sheets separate regions of opposite polarity and mark the sector boundaries in the corona. The sheets are visible as helmet streamers. The solar sector boundary is tilted with respect to central meridian, and boundaries with opposite polarity change are oppositely tilted. The tilt of a given type of boundary [(+, ?) or (?, +)] changes systematically during the sunspot cycle as the polarity of the polar fields reverses. Similar reversals of the position of the streamers at the limbs takes place. If we consider (a) a sunspot cycle where the northern polar field is inward (?) during the early part of the cycle and (b) a (+, ?) sector boundary at central meridian then the model predicts the following pattern; a streamer at high northern latitudes should be observed over the west limb together with a corresponding southern streamer over the east limb. The current sheet runs now NW-SE. At sunspot maximum the boundary is more in the N-S direction; later when the polar fields have completed their reversal the boundary runs NE-SW and the northern streamer should be observed over the east limb and the southern streamer over the west limb. Observational evidence in support of the model is presented, especially the findings of Hansen, Sawyer and Hansen and Koomen and Howard that the K-corona is highly structured and related to the solar sector structure.     

Solar activity and the variations of the geomagnetic Kp-index

A careful correlation analysis is made between various types of solar activity as observed at photospheric levels and the daily variations of the geomagnetic K_p-index which, in turn, is a measure of the solar wind speed. We find that in no case does a significant enough correlation exist to pin-point a physical relation between some aspect of photospheric activity and the solar wind speed. It is concluded that the physical processes that do determine the wind speed occur at coronal heights.     

INDUSTRIAL IMPACTS OF FOREIGN ENTERPRISE: A CANADIAN TECHNOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

The technological underdevelopment of secondary manufacturing in Canada is inferred from patterns of trade, industrial structure, and the range of industrial functions performed within firms in Canada. These patterns are explained by reference to the behavior of foreign subsidiaries that have major direct and indirect effects on the linkages and developmental potential of the Canadian industrial system. Canadian manufacturing is found to have a low level of innovative capability because of inadequate R & D and product and design engineering in foreign and domestic firms. In view of the strong need for new policy initiatives, the components of a techno-industrial strategy are evaluated.
