Throughflow marsh flumes were used to measure total sediment exchanges (TSS) between the marshes and water column of two Louisiana estuaries. One, the Barataria Basin estuary, is isolated from significant riverine sediment input. There were significant (p<0.05) imports of 33.9 to 443 mg TSS m?2 h?1 at the Barataria Basin brackish marsh (BM) site. The Barataria Basin saltmarsh (SM) site exported TSS in two summer samplings, but significant uptake was measured in April (166 mg m?2 h?1) and November (45 mg m?2 h?1) during a winter frontal passage event. The other estuary, Fourleague Bay, receives large sediment inputs from the Atchafalaya River, and TSS imports of 22.5 to 118.5 mg m?2 h?1 were measured at the BM site here. We calculated sediment accumulation from fluxes quantified in marsh flumes using site-specific sedimentological data and flooding regimes at each site. Water level records from May 1987 to April 1989 showed an extended period of unusually low flooding frequencies. As a result, calculated accretion rates were low, with monthly rates of 0.02 to 0.11 mm and ?0.06 to 0.06 mm at the Barataria BM and SM sites, respectively, and ?0.18 to 0.08 mm at the Fourleague Bay marsh flume site. Actual net sediment deposition, determined by feldspar marker horizon analysis, was 0.7–1.6 mm mo?1 at the Barataria SM and 0.2–1.3 mm mo?1 at the Fourleague Bay BM. Even the highest calculated accretion rates, based on flume measurements, were half to one order of magnitude lower than actual measured sediment deposition. This discrepancy was probably because: 1) most sedimentation occurs during episodic events, such as Hurricane Gilbert in September 1988, which deposited 3.5–15.5 mm of sediment on the Barataria Basin saltmarsh, or 2) most vertical accretion in Louisiana marshes occurs via deposition of in situ organic matter rather than by influx of allochthonous sediment. Our results affirm the variability of short-term sediment transport and depositional processes, the close coupling of meteorologic forcing and flooding regime to sediment dynamics, and the importance of understanding these interrelated mechanisms in the context of longer term measurements.  相似文献

The exchange of dissolved nutrients between marshes and the inundating water column was measured using throughflow marsh flumes built, in two microtidal Louisiana estuaries: the Barataria Basin estuary and Fourleague Bay. The flumes were sampled between September 1986 and April 1988, coincident with an extended period of low sea level on the Louisiana coast. The Barataria Basin estuary is in the later, deteriorating stage of the deltaic cycle, characterized by low freshwater inputs and subsiding marshes. Both brackish and saline marshes supplied dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), inorganic nitrogen (ammonium + nitrate + nitrite = DIN), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total nitrogen (as total Kjeldahl nitrogen = TKN) to the water column. The export of DIN is probably related to the N accumulated in earlier stages of deltaic development and released as these marshes deteriorate. Coastal brackish marshes of Fourleague, Bay, part of an accreting marsh system in an early, developmental stage of the deltaic cycle, exported TKN to the open water estuary in all samplings. This marsh apparently acted as a short-term buffer of DIN by taking up NH4 + in spring, when baywide concentrations were high, and supplying DIN to the estuary in summer and fall, when concentrations, in the bay were lower. Differences in phosphorus (P), DOC, and DON fluxes between these two estuaries were also observed. The Fourleague Bay site exported soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and total phosphorus (TP) and imported DOC. This P export may be related to remobilization of sediment-bound riverine P by the reducing, soils of the marshes. Fluxes of SRP at the Barataria Basin sites were variable and low while DOC was imported. Most imports of dissolved nutrients were correlated with higher upstream [source] concentrations, and flux rates were fairly consistent throughout the tide. Dissolved nutrient exports, did not correlate with upstream concentrations, though, and in many cases the flux was dominated by early, flood tide nutrient release. This pulsed behavior may be caused by rapid diffusion from the sediments early in the tidal cycle, when the sediment-water concentration gradient is largest. Interestuary differences were also seen in particulate organic matter fluxes, as the Fourleague Bay marsh exported POC and PON during all samplings while Barataria Basin imported these nutrients. In general, the magnitude and direction of nutrient exchanges in Louisiana marshes, seem to reflect the deltaic successional stage of the estuary.  相似文献

Samples located near the Oregon Dome anorthosite massif in the south-central Adirondack Mountains, New York contain the fluid-buffering mineral assemblages: amphibole + clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + quartz or biotite + quartz + orthopyroxene + K-feldspar. These rocks were metamorphosed under granulite-facies conditions (T=725°–750°C, P=7.5 kbar) during the Grenville orogeny. The Mg-rich nature of amphiboles, micas, and pyroxenes allow accurate calculation of water activities because corrections for the effects of solid solution are relatively small. The activity of water was low during the peak of granulite-facies metamorphism, with H2O0.15±0.14. Wollastonite occurrences indicate that the CO2 was low (<0.3) in nearby rocks, demonstrating that large quantities of CO2 did not infiltrate in a pervasive manner. In order to provide additional constraints on models for partial melting of common metasediments, we have studied experimentally the melting of a natural metapelite under fluid-absent conditions. The starting composition contains quartz, plagioclase, biotite, muscovite, garnet, staurolite, and kyanite. Experiments were done in a halfinch piston-cylinder apparatus at 7, 10, and 12 kbar and at temperatures ranging from 750° to 1250° C. The following reactions account for the mineralogical changes observed at 10 kbar between 750° and 1250° C: Bi+Als+Pl+Q=L+Gt+(Kf), Ky=Sill, Gt+Als=Sp+Q, Gt=L+Sp+Q, and Sp+Q=L+Als.The compositions of the phases (at T>875° C) were determined using an energy-dispersive system on a scanning electron microscope. The relative proportions of melt and crystals were calculated by mass balance and by processing images from the SEM. These constraints, together with other available experimental data, are used to propose a series of P-T, T-XH2O, and liquidus diagrams which represent a model for the fluid-present and fluid-absent melting of metapelites in the range 2–20 kbar and 600°–1250° C.We demonstrate that, even under fluid-absent conditions, a large proportion (40%) of S-type granitic liquid is produced within a narrow temperature range (850°–875° C), as a result of the reaction Bi+Als+Pl+Q=L+Gt(+/-Kf). Such liquids, or at least some proportion of them, are likely to segregate from the source, leaving behind a residue composed of quartz, garnet, sillimanite, plagioclase, representing a characteristic assemblage of aluminous granulites.The production of a large amount of melt at around 850° C also has the important effect of buffering the temperature of metamorphism. In a restitic, recycled, lower crust undergoing further metamorphism, temperature may reach values close to 1000° C due to the absence of this buffering effect. Partial melting is the main process leading to intracontinental differentiation. We discuss the crustal cross-section exposed in the North Pyrenean Zone in the context of our experiments and modelling.  相似文献

Oxygen isotope analyses of 101 samples from the Marcy Anorthosite Massif (61 from this study, 40 from Taylor 1969), indicate that two major and distinct processes of crustal contamination have affected the massif. Ninety percent of the 93 samples with over 65% plagioclase are enriched in 18O by 2.6 relative to normal anorthosites or gabbros: the average 18O for 83 enriched samples is 9.5 Depletions in 18O occur in 8% of the samples which have values ranging from 3.0 to 5.8 Only 2 of the samples fall within the normal magmatic range for anorthosites.Low 18O values of 3.0 to 5.8 in the anorthosite occur only near contacts, and a gradient in 18O occurs near the contact within the border zone of the massif. Low 18O values in both the anorthosite and adjacent wollastonite skarns (with 18O down to –1.3) were probably caused by isotopic exchange with heated meteoric water when the anorthosite intruded at shallow levels, prior to Grenvilleage ( 1.1 by) granulite facies metamorphism.The 18O-enrichment was ascribed to exchange between anorthosite and 18O-rich marble by means of a pervasive, H2O-CO2 fluid during the regional metamorphism by Taylor (1969). However, a number of lines of evidence argue against this hypothesis: 1) the preservation of premetamorphic low 18O values in anorthosite from the border zone as well as preserved gradients in 18O from a number of localities, 2) mass balance calculations of the amount of marble necessary to produce the 18O enrichment 3) metamorphic phase equilibria which buffer and to low values, and, 4) recent oxygen isotope analyses show homogeneity which indicates that magmatic oxygen isotope compositions have been preserved. We evaluated the importance of magmatic assimilation of country rock at the present level of intrusion as an alternative cause of the 18Oenrichment. Samples from 2 distinct lobes of the massif were analyzed: the NE lobe where xenoliths of metasedimentary country rock are common, and the NW lobe, where xenoliths are scarce and the country rock is dominantly granitic. The mean values of 18O for these two lobes are 9.6 in the NE and 9.3 in the NW. Thus, magmatic assimilation at the present level of exposure probably had only localized and relatively minor effects on the oxygen isotope composition of the massif. This conclusion is supported by Rb/Sr data: variations in Rb content and (87Sr/ 86Sr)i show that such crustal contamination is localized, generally occurring only in samples near the border zone. All of the available results suggest that the 18O-enrichment is a magmatic feature, acquired prior to intrusion at the present level of exposure.  相似文献

Plankton metabolism andRuppia maritima biomass were measured seasonally during 1982–83 in El Verde Lagoon, a small coastal lagoon with an ephemeral inlet on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Total net aquatic primary production was 521 g C m?2 y?1. The water column was slightly heterotrophic, with an annual P/R ratio of 0.89. Our analysis indicates that tropical and subtropical coastal lagoons with restricted or seasonal inlets have generally higher net aquatic primary productivity levels than lagoons with permanently open inlets. We hypothesize that this is due to retention of nutrients and plankton stocks during the dry season. The seasonal pattern of water column metabolism was related to rainfall and riverflow, with higher values generally occurring during the wet season. Net production and respiration were about three times lower during the 1982 dry season as compared to the 1983 dry season which received considerable rains due to abnormal climatic conditions. The biomass ofR. maritima ranged from zero to 620 g dry wt m?2. Growth occurred only during the dry season and there were two distinct biomass peaks representing two separate crops. The second crop was heavily epiphytized with nitrogen-fixing algae. There was an apparent succession in dominance of water column productivity over the year, withRuppia dominating during the dry season and phytoplankton more important during the wet season.  相似文献

A finite element procedure to model the non-linear earthquake response of concrete gravity dam systems is presented. A two-dimensional idealization is adopted for the dam and water in order to simplify the analysis and reduce the computational effort. The foundation of the dam is modelled as a rigid rectangular massless plate attached to a three-dimensional viscoelastic half-space. The non-linear behaviour is represented by smearing techniques and includes tensile cracking with subsequent opening, closing and sliding, as well as water cavitation in the reservoir. Special treatments are applied to suppress spurious oscillations in the water response associated with cavitation and to prevent cracks in the dam from spreading into wide zones. Experience from non-linear analyses is cited as it affects the design of the algorithm.  相似文献

The areal outflow of ice through Fram Strait during the period 1953–1984 is estimated on a monthly basis from the geostrophic wind and the ice concentration. Summer ice coverage in various sectors of the Arctic is then compared with the computed outflow through Fram Strait in various antecedent periods. Lag correlations indicate that interannual variations of summer ice severity in the Pacific side of the Arctic Basin are consistent with fluctuations of Fram Strait outflow during the previous 3–9 months. The findlings suggest that above-normal outflow of multiyear ice during the winter/spring months may precondition the large-scale pack ice to respond more directly to offshore flow events during the ensuing months.The areas of highest correlation with Fram Strait outflow undergo a pronounced shift in the early 1970's. Coincident changes in the large-scale circulation pattern imply that the source region of the Transpolar Drift Stream shifted westward from the Alaskan to the Siberian waters during this period.  相似文献
