Global Climate Models (GCMs) generally exhibit significant biases in the representation of large-scale atmospheric circulation. Even after a sensible bias adjustment these errors remain and are inherited to some extent by the derived downscaling products, impairing the credibility of future regional projections. In this study we perform a process-based evaluation of state-of-the-art GCMs from CMIP5 and CMIP6, with a focus on the simulation of the synoptic climatological patterns having a most prominent effect on the European climate. To this aim, we use the Lamb Weather Type Classification (LWT, Lamb British isles weather types and a register of the daily sequence 736 of circulation patterns 1861-1971. METEOROL OFF, GEOPHYS MEM; 737 GB; DA 1972; NO 116; PP 1-85; BIBL 2P1/2, 1972), a subjective classification of circulation weather types constructed upon historical simulations of daily mean sea level pressure. Observational uncertainty has been taken into account by considering four different reanalysis products of varying characteristics. Our evaluation unveils an overall improvement of salient atmospheric circulation features consistent across observational references, although this is uneven across models and large frequency biases still remain for the main LWTs. Some CMIP6 models attain similar or even worse results than their CMIP5 counterparts, although in most cases consistent improvements have been found, demonstrating the ability of the new models to better capture key synoptic conditions. In light of the large differences found across models, we advocate for a careful selection of driving GCMs in downscaling experiments with a special focus on large-scale atmospheric circulation aspects.

The tidal circulation patterns in the Terminos Lagoon were studied based on the analysis of 1 year of measurements and numerical simulations using a baroclinic 3D hydrodynamic model, the MARS3D. A gauging network was installed consisting of six self-recording pressure–temperature sensors, a tide gauge station and two current profilers, with pressure and temperature sensors moored in the main lagoon inlets. Model simulations were validated against current and sea level observations and were used to analyse the circulation patterns caused by the tidal forcing. The numerical model was forced with eight harmonic components, four diurnal (K 1, O 1, P 1, Q 1) and four semi-diurnal (M 2, S 2, N 2, K 2), extracted from the TPX0.7 database. The tidal patterns in the study area vary from mixed, mainly diurnal in the two main inlets of the lagoon, to diurnal in its interior. The tidal residual circulation inside the lagoon is dominated by a cyclonic gyre. The results indicate a net flux from the southwest Ciudad del Carmen inlet (CdC) towards the northeast Puerto Real inlet (PtR) along the southern side of the lagoon and the opposite in the northern side. The results indicate two areas of strong currents in the vicinity of the inlets and weak currents inside the lagoon. The area of strong currents in the vicinity of the CdC inlet is larger than that observed in the PtR inlet. Nevertheless, the current analysis indicates that the highest current speeds, which can reach a magnitude of 1.9 m s?1, occurred in PtR. A further analysis of the tide distortion in the inlets revealed that both passages are ebb dominated.  相似文献

We present a diagnostic study to evaluate the suitability of Ficus benjamina tree leaves as a captor of heavy metal particles from atmospheric dusts in urban areas. Leaf samples were taken at 16 localities within three areas in Morelia, state of Michoacán (Mexico??s medium size city, 830000 inhabitants). Measurements of magnetic susceptibility were conducted to determine the magnetic enhancement using samples from green, relatively unpolluted area, as a reference. The samples collected at areas with heavy traffic (main avenues) yielded values almost ten times higher than the values obtained for the unpolluted reference. Isothermal Remanent Magnetization curves are proportional to the degree of pollution. Associations of almost pure magnetite with heavy metals were revealed by scanning electron microscope.  相似文献

Sedimentary basins represent an archive of tectonic events of the hinterland source regions. By determining the variation in sediment lagtime over time, events can be distinguished which may no longer be available as the source has been eroded. In regions characterized by rapid exhumation this is most often the case but the erosion products form a record of these events. Detrital zircon fission‐track ages from sediments of the Siwalik basin, Pakistan, originally presented by Cerveny et al. (New Perspectives in Basin Analysis, Springer‐Verlag, New York, 1988, p. 43), have been reinvestigated and reinterpreted using a revised methodological approach. Detrital age populations were determined from different stratigraphic levels and were correlated through time in order to assess the change in lag time over the stratigraphic section. This information was combined with the many new ages from the hinterland to further interpret events in the source region. The new investigation suggests that steady‐state evolution has not always existed. An overall trend of exhumation increasing by 0.1 mm Myr?1 (from 0.9 to 2.65 mm yr?1) from 18 Ma to the present is evident with a major exception of a net pulse between 11.7 and 10.9 Ma associated with an increase in sedimentation increasingly rich in hornblende. Earlier studies suggested that at this time the source of the sediments was the presently outcropping Kohistan Arc. We are able to demonstrate that this cannot be so but was rather the rapidly exhuming Nanga‐Parbat Haramosh syntaxis (> 2 mm yr?1) coevally with transpressional displacement along the Main Karakorum Thrust, whereby the overlying Kohistan Arc sequences were removed. Furthermore, comparison of our detrital thermochronological data set with another one from the same basin and one from another foreland basin to the east, in NW India suggest that the Himalayan orogenesis was probably not synchronous for the late Early–Middle Miocene. Overall, regions that undergoes today's rapid uplift may be useless to reconstruct earlier phases of exhumation as the levels that may have yielded such info were eroded and deposited into the adjacent basin(s). Such scenario is reproducible in most orogens as in the Himalaya in NW Pakistan stressing the high potential of detrital thermochronological studies to trace hinterland dynamics. Five common placolith-bearing coccolithophorid algae—Gephyrocapsa oceanica, Coccolithus pelagicus, Calcidiscus leptoporus, Umbilicosphaera sibogae (var. sibogae and var. foliosa), and Emiliania huxleyi—were cultured to investigate controls on Sr partitioning in coccolith calcite. For identical temperature and media composition, Sr partitioning varies by more than 30% in exponential phase cultures of the five species and is linearly related to rates of calcite production/cell (ρ=0.91). Exponential phase culture experiments with three strains of C. leptoporus and six strains of G. oceanica at varying temperatures show variations in Sr partitioning of 20% and 30%, respectively. With C. leptoporus, Sr partitioning is equally correlated with temperature and calcification rate (ρ=0.8), which themselves are highly correlated; the slope of the relationship between DSr and calcification rate is comparable to that observed in all species at constant temperature. However, in G. oceanica, increased temperature appears to enhance Sr incorporation by up to 2% to 1.6% °C−1 in the range of 15 to 30 °C. The strong influence of calcification rate on Sr partitioning may be useful for inferring past variations in coccolithophorid productivity from Sr partitioning in coccolith sediments if the influence of temperature on Sr partitioning can be resolved. Because the relationship between calcite production and Sr partitioning is linear, a proportional change in calcification should be expressed much more strongly in the Sr/Ca ratio of large species with rapid calcite production than in smaller species, which produce calcite more slowly. Consequently, it may be possible to separate temperature and calcification influences on coccolith Sr/Ca by separately analyzing Sr/Ca in species that produce calcite rapidly and those that produce calcite slowly, if both undergo comparable relative changes in calcification rates.  相似文献

The effectiveness of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMD) on buildings subjected to moderate and high-intensity motions is analysed. First, the response of a 22-storey four-bay reinforced concrete non-linear frame with a TMD is studied for motions with different intensities. Several values of the relevant parameters are assumed in the analyses. Then, equivalent single-degree-of-freedom systems with TMDs and without them are defined and analysed under the action of ground motions with intensities associated with different return intervals at the site where the structures are located. Vulnerability curves for the systems are obtained based on the probabilities of reaching two different performance limit states. The expected annual rate of exceedance of each limit state is calculated. The results show that the effectiveness of TMDs is higher for systems with small non-linearity produced by small and moderate earthquakes, than for systems with high non-linear behaviour, generally associated with high-intensity motions. Coastal developments in Venezuela are leading to the rapid destruction of the mangrove forests. Population pressure leads to an overcrowding of public recreational beaches and the wealthy are increasingly seeking out previously deserted coasts. A rash of summer houses built on stilts over the shallow water is now extending around the mangrove areas, causing pollution, erosion and a progressive deterioration of the coastal environment.  相似文献

The phreatic activity and the subsequent dacitic dome growth in 1998–1999 at Guagua Pichincha volcano, Ecuador, were associated with two seismic swarms: one located in the northern part of Quito (population: 1,500,000) and another one, just below the active volcano, about 15–20 km SW from the first one. Quito swarm tectonic events have high frequencies (from 1 to 10–15 Hz). We registered more than 3200 events (among which 2354 events of 1.4≤ML≤4.2) between June 1998 and December 1999 at the −2- and −17-km depth. The volcanic events below the Guagua Pichincha caldera have high (from 1 to 10–15 Hz) and low (less than 3 Hz) frequencies. Approximately, 130,000 events were registered between September 1998 and December 1999 at the +2.4- and −3.5-km depth. Here, we study the stress tensors of these two swarms deduced from the polarities of P first motions and compare them to the regional stress tensor deduced from CMT Harvard focal mechanisms. The Quito swarm stress tensor is relatively close to the regional stress tensor (the σ1 axis was oriented N117°E close to the N102°E direction of the plate motion found by the GPS measurement, and σ3 is nearly vertical). The difference may be due to the action of the closely active Guagua Pichincha volcano. The Guagua Pichincha stress tensor is very different from the regional tectonic one. The σ1 axis of the volcano is oriented N214°E, almost perpendicular to the σ1 of the swarm of Quito and σ3 is almost horizontal. Even if these two tensors are different, they can be explained in a more general tectonic scheme. The almost horizontal direction of σ3 just below the volcano is compatible with an extensional horizontal direction that may be expected in the shallow extrados part of a compressional region and consistent with an opening of the top of the Guagua Pichincha volcano. The movement of the fluids (magma, gas and/or groundwater) produced by the closely active Guagua Pichincha volcano seems to have an influence in the acceleration of the generation of seismic events.  相似文献
