Chlorination by-products (CBPs) are formed as a result of the cnlorination of power station cooling water for anti-fouling purposes. Their production was studied at 10 coastal power stations in the UK, France and The Netherlands. Three categories of CBPs were determined: trihalomethanes; haloacetonitriles; and halophenols. Bromoform was the CBP most abundantly present in the effluents of all 10 power stations. At a mean chlorine dosage of 0.5–1.5 mg/litre (as Cl2) the mean bromoform concentration was 16.32 ± 2.10 μg/litre. The CBP found in second highest concentrations was dibromoacetonitrile (DBAN) with mean concentrations of 1.48 ± 0.56 μg/litre. Other CBPs detected were dibromochloromethane, bromodichloromethane and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol; concentrations of these three compounds were very low (< 1 μg/litre). At those sites at which bromoform was measured in the dispersing effluent plume it was found to behave as a conservative parameter (Significant direct correlation with plume ΔT).  相似文献

The El Niño of 1997–98 was one of the strongest warming events of the past century; among many other effects, it impacted phytoplankton along the Peruvian coast by changing species composition and reducing biomass. While responses of the main fish resources to this natural perturbation are relatively well known, understanding the ecosystem response as a whole requires an ecotrophic multispecies approach. In this work, we construct trophic models of the Northern Humboldt Current Ecosystem (NHCE) and compare the La Niña (LN) years in 1995–96 with the El Niño (EN) years in 1997–98. The model area extends from 4°S–16°S and to 60 nm from the coast. The model consists of 32 functional groups of organisms and differs from previous trophic models of the Peruvian system through: (i) division of plankton into size classes to account for EN-associated changes and feeding preferences of small pelagic fish, (ii) increased division of demersal groups and separation of life history stages of hake, (iii) inclusion of mesopelagic fish, and (iv) incorporation of the jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas), which became abundant following EN. Results show that EN reduced the size and organization of energy flows of the NHCE, but the overall functioning (proportion of energy flows used for respiration, consumption by predators, detritus and export) of the ecosystem was maintained. The reduction of diatom biomass during EN forced omnivorous planktivorous fish to switch to a more zooplankton-dominated diet, raising their trophic level. Consequently, in the EN model the trophic level increased for several predatory groups (mackerel, other large pelagics, sea birds, pinnipeds) and for fishery catch. A high modeled biomass of macrozooplankton was needed to balance the consumption by planktivores, especially during EN condition when observed diatoms biomass diminished dramatically. Despite overall lower planktivorous fish catches, the higher primary production required-to-catch ratio implied a stronger ecological impact of the fishery and stresses the need for precautionary management of fisheries during and after EN. During EN energetic indicators such as the lower primary production/total biomass ratio suggest a more energetically efficient ecosystem, while reduced network indicators such as the cycling index and relative ascendency indicate of a less organized state of the ecosystem. Compared to previous trophic models of the NHCE we observed: (i) a shrinking of ecosystem size in term of energy flows, (ii) slight changes in overall functioning (proportion of energy flows used for respiration, consumption by predators and detritus), and (iii) the use of alternate pathways leading to a higher ecological impact of the fishery for planktivorous fish.  相似文献

Real and complex Ritz vector bases for dynamic analysis of large linear systems with non-proportional damping are presented and compared. Both vector bases are generated utilizing load dependent vector algorithms that employ recurrence equations analogous to the Lanczos algorithm. The choice of static response to fixed spatial loading distribution, as a starting vector in recurrence equations, is motivated by the static correction concept. Different phases of dynamic response analysis are compared with respect to computational efficiency and accuracy. It is concluded that the real vector basis approach is approximately eight times more efficient than the complex vector basis approach. The complex vector basis has some advantages with respect to accuracy, if the excitation is of piecewise linear form, since the exact solution can be utilized. In addition, it is demonstrated that both Ritz vector bases, real and complex, possess superior accuracy over the adequate eigenvector bases.  相似文献

The principal rock types in the highlands are highland basalt (gabbroic anorthosite) with 28% Al2O3 and low K Fra Mauro basalt with 18% Al2O3. The chemistry of the highland soils and breccias can be represented by simple mixing models involving these rock types as major constituents. The mixing occurred during the intense highland cratering. Layering observed at the Apennine Front is interpreted as produced the Serenitatis basin collision. The plains-forming Cayley Formation and the Descartes Formation are not volcanic, but are derived from pre-existing highland crust.Although the overall chemical composition of the Moon has been affected by pre-accretion processes (e.g. loss of volatile elements), the composition of the highlands is mainly the result of postaccretion melting and element fractionation. Thus the individual rock types show involatile element distribution patterns, relative to primitive abundances, indicative of solid-liquid equilibria, evidence of post-accretion lunar igneous activity.The chemistry of the primitive green glass component (15426) indicates that the abundance of the involatile elements (REE, Ba, Zr, Hf, Th and U) in the source regions is at most only 2–3 times the abundances in chondrites.Paper dedicated to Professor Harold C. In this paper, the first statistically rigorous test is performed to determine whether there are dwarfs in the solar neighbourhood with [Fe/H] > +0.2 dex. The possibility that no such stars exist is rejected with a confidence limit exceeding 99.994 per cent. If the threshold value is raised to +0.38 dex, the corresponding hypothesis is rejected with a confidence limit of 98.5 per cent. It is tentatively found that this upper limit does not depend on the presence or absence of planets orbiting metal-rich stars. In a result that is unchanged from a previous paper, the upper limit for the known metallicities of giants is found to be about 0.2 dex lower than the limit for dwarfs. Stars that might be observed to improve the upper metallicity limit for dwarfs are listed.  相似文献
