Abstract– The insoluble carbonaceous matter from 12 chondrites (CI, CM, CO, CV, EH, and UOC), was characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Besides ubiquitous nanoglobules, the insoluble organic matter from petrologic type 1 and 2 chondrites and Semarkona (LL 3.0) is composed of a highly disordered polyaromatic component. No structural differences were observed between these IOMs, in agreement with the limited thermal metamorphism they all experienced. In chondrites of petrologic type >3.0, the evolution of the IOM is controlled by the extent of thermal metamorphism. The polyaromatic layers, shorter than 1 nm in petrologic type ≤3.0 chondrites, grow up to sizes between 5 and 10 nm in petrologic type >3.6 chondrites, contributing to the increase of the degree of structural order. In addition, we find rare, but ubiquitous onion‐like carbons, which may be the product of nanodiamond graphitization. The insoluble carbonaceous matter of the enstatite chondrite Sahara 97096 (EH 3) is different from the other meteorites studied here. It is more heterogeneous and displays a high abundance of graphitized particles. This may be the result of a mixture between (1) the disordered carbon located in the matrix, and (2) catalytic graphitized phases associated with metal, potentially originating from partial melting events. The structural and nanostructural evolution are similar in all IOMs. This suggests that the structure of the accreted precursors and the parent body conditions of their secondary thermal modifications (temperature, duration, and pressure) were similar. The limited degree of organization of the most metamorphosed IOMs compared with terrestrial rocks submitted to similar temperature suggests that the conditions are not favorable to graphitization processes, due to the chemical nature of the precursor or the lack of confinement pressure.  相似文献

The purpose of this work is to characterize the hydrochemical behavior of acid mine drainages (AMD) and superficial waters from the Adoria mine area (Northern Portugal). Samples of superficial and mine drainage water were collected for one year, bi-monthly, with pH, temperature, Eh, conductivity and HCO3 determined in situ with chemical analyses of SO4, Ca, K, Mg, Na, Cl, Ag, As, Bi, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn and Cd. In the mine, there are acidic waters, with low pH and significant concentrations of SO4, and metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Ni), while in the superficial natural stream waters outside the mine, the pH is close to neutral, with low conductivity and lower metal concentrations. The stream waters inside the mine influence are intermediate in composition between AMD and natural stream waters outside the mine influence. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) shows a clear separation between AMD galleries and AMD tailings, with tailings having a greater level of contamination.  相似文献

We present and discuss noble gas compositions of minerals from silicate rocks (olivines) and carbonatites (apatites and calcites) from Brava Island. The presence of an almost ubiquitous atmosphere-derived fingerprint is explained as reflecting contamination by seawater. Because of the high U and Th content in apatites, which are responsible for 4He production by α-decay, the high measured 4He/3He ratios do not represent magmatic signatures. In contrast, low values of 4He/3He in calcites (≥61,223; R/R a ≤ 11.80) and olivines (≥56,240; R/R a ≤ 12.85) are considered to be representative of signatures trapped at the time of crystallization, given that there are no evidences for significant cosmogenic additions. These relatively low 4He/3He ratios depicted by silicate and carbonatite rocks imply the contribution of a reservoir that evolved under low (U + Th)/3He; this is considered a strong evidence for the genesis of Brava by a mantle plume deeply anchored in the lower mantle. The inferred low 4He/40Ar* ratio (≈0.3), before degassing, is thought to reflect the contribution to the carbonatites source of a mantle domain evolving under high K/U, which cannot be explained by recycling of crustal components. The possible link between the low 4He/40Ar* source and the “missing Ar reservoir” is discussed. The usually referred geochemical dichotomy between Northern and Southern Cape Verde islands, which is markedly evident from Sr, Nd, and Pb isotope signatures, is not apparent from Brava Island (Southern Cape Verde), where some samples present relatively unradiogenic 4He/3He signatures, similar to those reported for the Northern islands of the archipelago.  相似文献

A major challenge to integrating local knowledge into collaborative environmental governance processes stems from the underlying differences between positivist science and local knowledge; these differences often result in strong differences of opinion regarding which forms of knowledge are valid in environmental decision-making. Previous research on these issues has mainly focused on the attitudes of scientists towards local knowledge. Studies of the views of local and non-scientific actors regarding their own knowledge are much less common. Through a qualitative case study of water allocation planning in South Australia, we analyzed participants’ conceptualizations of local knowledge and the role of local knowledge in collaborative governance. We found that participants defined local knowledge broadly across a number of dimensions and that many acknowledged variability in the nature and quality of different types of local knowledge. While most recognized the value of local knowledge in supporting technical investigations and developing policies, very few participants identified a role for local knowledge in the early stages of the collaborative process (i.e., in framing problems or establishing research protocols). Previous research has highlighted “epistemological anxiety” among scientists and resource managers toward local knowledge as a significant barrier to its effective use in environmental decision-making. This study suggests that state and local actors, and scientists and non-scientists, share similar reservations about local knowledge and highlights the need for researchers and practitioners to take into account the attitudes of all types of participants when considering how to overcome the epistemological challenges related to integrating local knowledge into collaborative management.  相似文献

Flooding is widely believed to be the most common natural disaster in Europe, and the changing climatic conditions are estimated to increase its adverse impacts. Effective flood strategies require thorough consideration of the factors underlying the flood generation mechanism and a widened display of mitigation priorities for spatially exhaustive assessments. Flood potential maps generated herein for indicating potential flood areas prove to be among powerful tools for comprehensive flood assessments. In the presented study, a countrywide characterization is achieved in this context by analyzing catchment units, which constitute the river basin systems in Turkey, through a series of spatial indices adapted from different factors effective in flood generation. The study aims to contribute to depicting priorities for in-depth flood assessments and to the re-orientation of subsequent control measures. The flood potential maps obtained for river catchments and designating individual locations with comparably higher flood potentials are expected to set light to the selection of case studies for local flood research in Turkey while contributing to decision making and policy implementation on flood control at the macroscale.  相似文献

Abstract

Six cavities have been discovered in the Oletta massif. The massif, today constitued of Schistes lustrés with several metres of calcareous layers above them, has undergone intense fracturing. The networks of cavities are organised along north-south and subequatorial directions, and form a narrow bayonnet-network. All the elements in the galleries appear to be karstic: stalagmites, stalactites and calcitic deposits along the walls; but no trace of dissolution or excavation was found. Thus, the origin of the galleries is only tectonic, while the calcitic deposits result from the dissolution of the old, thick calcareous layers above, which are no longer present. The thickness and the volume of the calcitic deposits, which is variable depending on the galleries, indicates the chronology of the different tectonic periods which have fractured the massif. Five tectonic and successsive events have been detected. Calcitic datings confirm the timing of successional fracturing, indicating also the variable age of the fossiliferous Middle Pleistocene deposits found in these cavities. © 1999 Éditions scientifiques et médicales Elsevier SAS  相似文献

In Norway, as in the rest of Fennoscandia, the process of Glacial Isostatic Adjustment causes ongoing crustal deformation. The vertical and horizontal movements of the Earth can be measured to a high degree of precision using GNSS. The Norwegian GNSS network has gradually been established since the early 1990s and today contains approximately 140 stations. The stations are established both for navigation purposes and for studies of geophysical processes. Only a few of these stations have been analyzed previously. We present new velocity estimates for the Norwegian GNSS network using the processing package GAMIT. We examine the relation between time-series length and precision. With approximately 3.5 years of data, we are able to reproduce the secular vertical rate with a precision of 0.5 mm/year. To establish a continuous crustal velocity field in areas where we have no GNSS receivers or the observation period is too short to obtain reliable results, either interpolation or modeling is required. We experiment with both approaches in this analysis by using (i) a statistical interpolation method called Kriging and (ii) a GIA forward model. In addition, we examine how our vertical velocity field solution is affected by the inclusion of data from repeated leveling. Results from our geophysical model give better estimates on the edge of the network, but inside the network the statistical interpolation method performs better. In general, we find that if we have less than 3.5 years of data for a GNSS station, the interpolated value is better than the velocity estimate based on a single time-series.  相似文献

This paper describes results from a detailed study of circular anomalies—related to outcrops of granitic domes over the western part of the Armorican Massif—using SPOT, Landsat TM, Seasat, and composite imagery in conjunction with aerial photographs. Two types of features have been distinguished: (1) simple and circular, related to small granitic bodies or to hidden domes, which correspond with concentric networks of fractures formed during the cooling of the granite, and (2) complex and composite of the onion skin type, related to the larger plutonic domes. This type of feature could also be related to the concentric cooling networks but would more probably correspond to the magmatic foliation planes. Semi-circular features of the “half-moon” type, derived from these described structures, are located on the periphery of plutonic domes. These could correspond to preliminary intrusions cross cut by the major structures. From the lineament maps and based on the relationship between regional foliation fracturing networks and circular features, the following networks can be distinguished: (1) radial networks centered on plutonic diapirs, which seem to be contemporary with the granitic intrusions; (2) transverse networks that pass around or across circular features, creating fan-shaped forms and which are late with respect to the granitic intrusions; (3) post-tectonic fracturing networks that cross all previously described structures; and (4) a network, parallel to the regional foliation N070, which crosses or twists the circular features. The tropical Indian Ocean experiences an interannual mode of climatic variability, known as the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). The signature of this variability in ocean salinity is hypothesized based on modeling and assimilation studies, on account of scanty observations. Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite has been designed to take up the challenge of sea surface salinity remote sensing. We show that SMOS data can be used to infer the pattern of salinity variability linked with the IOD events. The core of maximum variability is located in the central tropical basin, south of the equator. This region is anomalously salty during the 2010 negative IOD event, and anomalously fresh during the 2011 positive IOD event. The peak-to-peak anomaly exceeds one salinity unit, between late 2010 and late 2011. In conjunction with other observational datasets, SMOS data allow us to draw the salt budget of the area. It turns out that the horizontal advection is the main driver of salinity anomalies. This finding is confirmed by the analysis of the outputs of a numerical model. This study shows that the advent of SMOS makes it feasible the quantitative assessment of the mechanisms of ocean surface salinity variability in the tropical basins, at interannual timescales.  相似文献

Submerged macrophyte abundance strongly influences aquatic ecosystems. Because of a lack of monitoring data, however, the long-term dynamics of such aquatic plants are poorly understood. Increasingly, paleolimnologists use changes in subfossil algae and invertebrates to infer past submerged macrophyte dynamics and assess how human activities have altered this important primary producer component of aquatic ecosystems. We evaluated the sensitivity of subfossil diatom and chironomid assemblages to historically documented changes in macrophyte abundance in Chenango Lake, New York, USA, where macrophyte cover has been monitored since 1978. We also tested the ability of a semi-quantitative diatom-based macrophyte-abundance inference model to detect the pronounced macrophyte decline that was observed between 1993 and 2001. Diatoms responded to the recent loss of macrophytes, with a decline in the relative abundance of macrophyte-associated taxa. Estimates of macrophyte abundance fluctuated according to the diatom-based inference model. Chironomid changes were coherent with the diatom-inferred macrophyte zones. The largest shifts in subfossil assemblages occurred before the start of the monitoring record and coincided with construction of a ~4.3-m-high dam on the lake, which substantially expanded the littoral habitat. Even in heavily managed systems, large reductions in macrophyte abundance can be detected with paleolimnological approaches.  相似文献
