Two Holocene ice core records from East Antarctica (Vostok and EPICA-Dome C) were analysed for dust concentration and size distribution at a temporal resolution of 1 sample per ~50 years. A series of volcanic markers randomly distributed over the common part of the ice cores (from 9.8 to 3.5 kyear BP) ensures accurate relative dating (±33 years). Dust-size records from the two sites display oscillations structured in cycles with sub-millennial and secular scale frequencies that are apparently asynchronous. The power spectra of the composite sum (Σ) of the two dust-size records display spectral energy mostly for 150- to 500-year periodicities. On the other hand, the 200-year band is common to both records and the 200 year components of the two sites are out-of-phase (100-year lead or lag) over ~5.5 kyear, a phenomenon also reflected by a significant (>99% conf. lev.) band in the power spectra of the composite difference (Δ) of the two size records. During long-range transport, mineral dust originating from the Southern Hemisphere continents is graded to a variable extent depending on the altitude and duration of atmospheric transport. Relatively coarse dust is associated with air mass penetration from the middle–lower troposphere and conversely relatively fine dust with upper troposphere air masses or the influence of subsidence over the Antarctic plateau, a hypothesis already proposed for the changes that occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum to Holocene transition (Delmonte et al. 2004b). Moreover, we assume that the overall fluctuation of air mass advection over Antarctica depends on the meridional pressure gradient with respect to low latitudes, i.e. the Antarctic Oscillation (AAO). We therefore suggest a regional variability in atmospheric circulation over East Antarctica. The 150–500 year power spectrum of the composite (Σ) parameter represents the long term variability of the AAO, imprinted by secular internal oscillations probably related to the southern ocean-climatic system. On the other hand, the Δ dust composite parameter suggests a persistent atmospheric dipole over East Antarctica delivering coarser (finer) dust particles alternatively to Vostok and Dome C regions with a bi-centennial periodicity. Indeed, a seesaw phenomenon in dust size distribution was already observed at three East Antarctic sites during the last deglaciation (Delmonte et al. 2004b) and was interpreted as a progressive reduction of the eccentricity of the polar vortex with respect to the geographic south pole. Interestingly, the Δ parameter shows a pronounced 200-year oscillation mode, throwing new light on the unresolved question of a possible relationship between climate and solar activity.  相似文献

The progress of the joint Pilot Project for time transfer, formed by the International GPS Service (IGS) and the Bureal International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), was recently reviewed. Three notable milestones were set. (1) The IGS will implement, at least in a test mode, an internally realized time scale based on an integration of combined frequency standards within the IGS network. This will eventually become the reference time scale for all IGS clock products (instead of the current GPS broadcast time). (2) A new procedure for combined receiver and satellite clock products will be implemented officially in November 2000. Receiver clocks are an entirely new product of the IGS. (3) The BIPM will coordinate an effort to calibrate all Ashtech Z12-T (and possibly other) receivers suitable for time transfer applications, either differentially or absolutely. Incoherent scatter radars are designed to detect scatter from thermalfluctuations in the ionosphere. These fluctuations contain, among other things,features associated with ion-acoustic waves driven by random motions within theplasma. The resulting spectra are generally broad and noisy, but neverthelessthe technique can, through a detailed analysis of spectra, be used to measure arange of physical parameters in the Earth's upper atmosphere, and provides apowerful diagnostic in studies of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling,thermosphere dynamics and the geospace environment in general. In recent yearsthere has been much interest in naturally occurring (as opposed to artificiallystimulated) enhanced ion-acoustic spectra seen in the auroral zone andcusp/cleft region. A study of the plasma instability processes that lead tosuch spectra will help us to better understand auroral particle acceleration,wave-particle and wave-wave interactions in the ionosphere, and theirassociation with magnetospheric processes. There is now a substantial body ofliterature documenting observations of enhanced ion-acoustic spectra, but thereremains controversy over generation mechanisms. We present a review ofliterature documenting observations of naturally enhanced ion-acoustic spectra,observed mainly along the geomagnetic field direction, along with a discussionof the theories put forward to explain such phenomena.  相似文献

We study the orbital evolutions of various systems of planetary embryos in the transneptunian region, undergoing mutual scattering and perturbations from the giant planets. We show that about 15-20% of the original embryos should survive in the transneptunian region at the current epoch. The orbital dispersion of the surviving embryos depends on their individual mass, so that only lunar mass embryos could survive with semimajor axis smaller than 50 AU. In all cases, we show by a Monte Carlo model that at least one of the surviving embryos should have already been discovered by one of the most effective Kuiper-belt surveys. This implies that planetary embryos did not form in the transneptunian region (or have been removed by some external and unknown mechanism). Therefore, we conclude that the Kuiper belt was not excited by resident planetary embryos, unlike the asteroid belt. We also compute with the Monte Carlo model that a significant number (order 10) of Pluto-size bodies could exist only on very eccentric and long-periodic orbits, typical of the scattered disk, while the existence of about 30 bodies brighter than absolute magnitude 4 in the classical belt is compatible with the discovery of Varuna by the Spacewatch survey.  相似文献

Particularly well exposed structures in folded and cleaved sedimentary cover immediately overlying a crystalline basement have been studied. Chemical analysis (X.R.F. and microprobe) reveal pressure solution process and give the possibilities of measurement of mass transfer. Study of fluid inclusion veins has determined the temperature pressure conditions: thermal effect of the basement and decrease of temperature and pressure with the age of various synkinematic veins.Characteristic examples of the behaviour of a heterogeneous material during coaxial and non-coaxial deformation are shown:
1. (1) Successive different asymmetrical folds, various cleavages and fractures appear in a shear zone parallel to the main fabric with variations of thickness and rock behaviour.
2. (2) Evolution of cleavage in such a shear zone (with or without slipping) is linked to the relations between the rotation of contraction direction and the rate of the cleavage process.
3. (3) Fold axes changed from the horizontal y direction to the vertical (or E—W transversal to the crystalline massif) X direction, with increase of the (X/Z) and (X/Y) ratios (obtained by fossils and reconstructed fold shape). This strain is always heterogeneous and the most deformed zone frequently evolves to discontinuities with slip.
4. (4) Indentation exists on all scale: from hard object (100 μ, with parenthesis form of pressure solution cleavage apparent on map distribution of various element) to basement block (with variation of strain value in the indented cover).
A model of the evolution of the deformation of sedimentary cover immediately overlying a crystalline basement is given in conclusion.  相似文献

It has been suggested that iodine oxides, IOx, could play a significant role in the ozone destruction in the lower stratosphere. To investigate this suggestion, spectra from nine SAOZ uv-visible spectrometer balloon flights were examined for the IO absorption signature between 405 and 450 nm. IO was not detected, either at mid- or high latitude, in the morning or the evening, in summer or winter. An upper limit of 0.2 parts per trillion by volume (pptv) at 20 km and 0.1 pptv at 15 km at the 95% confidence level (2), was derived from the best measurements at 90° SZA at sunset and sunrise. Since a photochemical model shows that 70% of inorganic iodine should be in the form IO at that time, it is concluded that unless iodine chemistry is different from that assumed at the moment, the role of iodine in stratospheric ozone depletion is small.  相似文献

Metasomatic reactions between quartz and incompatible oxides or hydroxides were experimentally studied at 550°C and 1000 bars water pressure. Two porous pellets of the initial reagents pressed one against the other were used. Reaction rims in the millimeter range develop at the initial boundary in the oxide pellet. All the experiments show that an important transfer of silica occurs by diffusion in the stationary intergranular solution.The chemical transfer of silica through the intergranular fluid is quantitatively determined by studying the kinetics of growth of the forsterite rim in the system quartz-brucite. The kinetics limiting stage being silica transfer, the experiments allow the determination of the diffusion coefficient of silica through the solution. At 550°C and 1000 bars, a value of 2.4 × 10?1cm2 s1 is found.This high value shows the importance of chemical diffusion in the intergranular fluid of rocks during metamorphic processes.  相似文献
