Bacterial spores (Bacillus subtilis), cyanobacteria (Chroococcidiopsis sp.), and lichen (Xanthoria elegans) embedded in martian analogue rock (gabbro) were exposed to shock pressures between 5 and 50 GPa which is the range of pressures observed in martian meteorites. The survival of Bacillus subtilis and Xanthoria elegans up to 45 GPa and of Chroococcidiopsis sp. up to 10 GPa supports the possibility of transfer of life inside meteoroids between Mars and Earth and it implies the potential for the transfer of life from any Mars-like planet to other habitable planets in the same stellar system. 相似文献

One amazing heritage of the current altimetry missions, Jason-2, CryoSat-2 (without mentioning their predecessors TOPEX-Poseidon, ERS, Jason-1, and EnviSat) is that DORIS using DIODE On-Board Orbit Determination software calculate orbits in real-time with accuracy. For example, accuracy has been improved to 2.7 cm RMS on board DORIS/Jason-2 compared with the final Precise Orbit Ephemerides (POE) orbit, generally known to have less than 1 cm accuracy on the radial component. Simultaneously, an efficient integrity team on-ground continually monitors the health of the DORIS system.In February 2013, SARAL/AltiKa was launched hosting a DORIS DGXX receiver with the latest LV11 software as previously used in Jason-2 and CryoSat-2. DORIS on-board SARAL has since been permanently producing results efficiently every ten seconds without exception, including during manoeuvring phases. Spacecraft, ground-system, and users are provided with real-time information on the satellite position: the accuracy is approximately 3.0 cm RMS on the radial component, which is a major break-through for Near Real-Time (NRT) processing. A circular albedo feature in the Arabia Terra province was first hypothesized as an ancient impact basin using Viking-era information. To test this unpublished hypothesis, we have analyzed the Viking era-information together with layers of new data derived from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) and Mars Odyssey (MO) missions. Our analysis indicates that Arabia Terra is an ancient geologic province of Mars with many distinct characteristics, including predominantly Noachian materials, a unique part of the highland-lowland boundary, a prominent paleotectonic history, the largest region of fretted terrain on the planet, outflow channels with no obvious origins, extensive exposures of eroded layered sedimentary deposits, and notable structural, albedo, thermal inertia, gravity, magnetic, and elemental signatures. The province also is marked by special impact crater morphologies, which suggest a persistent volatile-rich substrate. No one characteristic provides definitive answers to the dominant event(s) that shaped this unique province. Collectively the characteristics reported here support the following hypothesized sequence of events in Arabia Terra: (1) an enormous basin, possibly of impact origin, formed early in martian history when the magnetic dynamo was active and the lithosphere was relatively thin, (2) sediments and other materials were deposited in the basin during high erosion rates while maintaining isostatic equilibrium, (3) sediments became water enriched during the Noachian Period, and (4) basin materials were uplifted in response to the growth of the Tharsis Bulge, resulting in differential erosion exposing ancient stratigraphic sequences. DUAL will study the origin and evolution of the elements and explores new frontiers of physics: extreme energies that drive powerful stellar explosions and accelerate particles to macroscopic energies; extreme densities that modify the laws of physics around the most compact objects known; and extreme fields that influence matter in a way that is unknown on Earth. The variability of these extreme objects requires continuous all-sky coverage, while detailed study demands an improvement in sensitivity over previous technologies by at least an order of magnitude. The DUAL payload is composed of an All-Sky Compton Imager (ASCI), and two optical modules, the Laue-Lens Optic (LLO) and the Coded-Mask Optic (CMO). The ASCI serves dual roles simultaneously, both as an optimal focal-plane sensor for deep observations with the optical modules and as a sensitive true all-sky telescope in its own right for all-sky surveys and monitoring. While the optical modules are located on the main satellite, the All-Sky Compton Imager is situated on a deployable structure at a distance of 30?m from the satellite. This configuration not only permits to maintain the less massive payload at the focal distance, it also greatly reduces the spacecraft-induced detector background, and, above all it provides ASCI with a continuous all-sky exposure. 相似文献

Sediment cores were collected from April to August 2004 on tidal mudflats of the macrotidal Marennes-Oléron Bay (SW France), famous for the cultivation of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas). The response of living (stained) benthic foraminifera to short-term biogeochemical disturbances in the sediment and overlying water, which may be involved in oyster summer mortality, was monitored. Short-term hypoxia occurred in early June, in conjunction with a sudden rise in temperature. In mid-June, the ammonia content of sediment porewater increased, leading to potentially maximal flux towards overlying waters. Foraminiferal assemblages, particularly in the topmost layer, were altered. Ammonia tepida was the most tolerant to temperature increase and hypoxic conditions whereas Brizalina variabilis and Haynesina germanica were sensitive to organic degradation and hypoxia. Cribroelphidium gunteri was the most opportunistic during recolonisation. Benthic foraminifera showed that short-term biochemical changes in the sediment are toxic and may be involved in the summer mortality of Pacific oysters. 相似文献

FeO*‐Al2O3‐TiO2‐rich rocks are found associated with transitional tholeiitic lava flows in the Tertiary Bana plutono‐volcanic complex in the continental sector of the Cameroon Line. These peculiar rocks consist principally of iron‐titanium oxides, aluminosilicates and phosphates, and occur as layers 1–3 m thick occupying the upper part of lava flows on the southwest (site 1) and northwest (site 2) sites of the complex. Mineral constituents of the rocks include magnetite, ilmenite, hematite, rutile, corundum, andalusite, sillimanite, cordierite, quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, apatite, Fe‐Mn phosphate, Al phosphate, micas and fine mixtures of sericite and silica. Texturally and compositionally, the rocks can be subdivided into globular type, banded type, and Al‐rich fine‐gained massive type. The first two types consist of dark globule or band enriched in Fe‐Ti oxides and apatite and lighter colored groundmass or bands enriched in aluminosilicates and quartz, respectively. The occurrence of andalusite and sillimanite and the compositional relations of magnetite and ilmenite in the FeO*‐Al2O3‐TiO2‐rich rocks suggest temperatures of crystallization in a range of 690–830°C at low pressures. The Bana FeO*‐Al2O3‐TiO2‐rich rocks are characterized by low concentrations of SiO2 (25–54.2 wt%), Na2O + K2O (0–1%), CaO (0–2%) and MgO (0–0.5%), and high concentrations of FeO* (total iron as FeO, 20–42%), Al2O3 (20–42%), TiO2 (3–9.2%), and P2O5 (0.26–1.30%). TiO2 is positively correlated with Al2O3 and inversely correlated with FeO*. The bulk rock compositions cannot be derived from the associated basaltic magma by crystal fractionation or by partial melting of the mantle or lower crustal materials. In ternary diagrams of (Al2O3)?(CaO + Na2O + K2O)?(FeO*+ MnO + MgO) and (SiO2)?(FeO*)?(Al2O3), the compositional field of the rocks is close to that of laterite and is distinct from the common volcanic rocks, suggesting that the rocks are derived from lateritic materials by recrystallization when the materials are heated by the basaltic magmas. A hydrothermal origin is discounted because the rocks contain high‐temperature mineral assemblages and lack sulfide minerals. It is proposed that the FeO*‐Al2O3‐TiO2‐rich rocks of the Bana complex were formed by pyrometamorphism of laterite by the heat of basaltic magmas. 相似文献

We study the origin of the ionic exchange enthalpy in montmorillonite clays using microcalorimetry measurements and molecular simulation. We first determine the standard reaction enthalpy for well-defined interlayer water contents. We then show by a detailed analysis based on thermodynamic cycles that replacing Na+ ions by Cs+ in the interlayer of montmorillonite clays is an endothermic process, and that the overall exchange is exothermic only because it is dominated by the exothermic replacement of Cs+ by Na+ in the aqueous phase. This conclusion from ionic exchange enthalpies supports the one of a recent study of the ionic exchange free energy by Teppen and Miller [Teppen B. J. and Miller D. M. (2006) Hydration energy determines isovalent cation exchange selectivity by clay minerals. Soil Sci. Soc. Am. J.70(1), 31-40] and contradicts long-held views on the role of ion-clay interactions in determining the ionic exchange thermodynamics. This calls for a paradigm shift for the origin of this exchange: The driving force is the “hydrophobicity” of Cs+ compared to Na+ and not its affinity for clay surfaces. 相似文献
