Fog is an atmospheric phenomenon that has important environmental consequences related to visibility, air quality and climate change on local and regional scales. The formation of radiation fog results from a complex balance between surface radiative cooling, turbulent mixing in the surface layer, aerosol growth by deliquescence and activation of fog droplets. During the ParisFog field experiment, out of 16 events forecasted for radiation fog, activated fog materialized in seven events, while in five other events the visibility dropped to 1–2 km but haze particle size remained below the critical size of activation. To better understand the conditions that lead to or do not lead to sustained fog droplet activation, we performed a comparative study of dynamic, thermal, radiative and microphysical processes occurring between sunset and fog (or quasi-fog) onset. We selected two radiation fog events and two quasi-radiation fog events that occurred under similar large-scale conditions for this comparative study. We identified that aerosol growth by deliquescence and droplet activation actually occurred in both quasi-fog events, but only during <1 h. Based on ParisFog measurements, we found that the main factors limiting sustained activation of droplets at fog onset in the Paris metropolitan area are (1) lack of mixing in the surface layer (typically wind speed <0.5 ms?1), (2) relative humidity exceeding 90 % throughout the residual layer, (3) low cooling rate in the surface layer (typically less than ?1 °C per hour on average) due to weak radiative cooling (0 to ?30 Wm?2) and near zero sensible heat fluxes, and (4) a combination of the three factors listed above during the critical phase of droplet activation preventing the transfer of cooling from the surface to the liquid layer. In addition, we found some evidence of contrasted aerosol growth by deliquescence under high relative humidity conditions in the four events, possibly associated with the chemical nature of the aerosols, which could be another factor impacting droplet activation.  相似文献

SPICES (Spectro-Polarimetric Imaging and Characterization of Exoplanetary Systems) is a five-year M-class mission proposed to ESA Cosmic Vision. Its purpose is to image and characterize long-period extrasolar planets and circumstellar disks in the visible (450?C900 nm) at a spectral resolution of about 40 using both spectroscopy and polarimetry. By 2020/2022, present and near-term instruments will have found several tens of planets that SPICES will be able to observe and study in detail. Equipped with a 1.5 m telescope, SPICES can preferentially access exoplanets located at several AUs (0.5?C10?AU) from nearby stars (<25 pc) with masses ranging from a few Jupiter masses to Super Earths (??2 Earth radii, ??10 M??) as well as circumstellar disks as faint as a few times the zodiacal light in the Solar System.  相似文献

Physical and chemical characteristics of intertidal sediments and their relationships with bacteria and cyanobacteria were analyzed at four stations at Pereque Beach. Granulometric analysis showed that Pereque beach has sediment that is classified as sand. The lowest value of the sediment C/N rates (6.08), mainly due to a higher concentration of organic nitrogen, was found at the northern part of Pereque Beach, where organic matter of marine source was more prominent. In this area, density (9.6x10(6)cells cm(-3)), biomass (1992.04ngC cm(-3)) and activity of bacteria were higher than at the southern end. In contrast, cyanobacteria density varied from 2.0 to 4.0x10(5)cells cm(-3), with biomass and total chlorophyll a of the sediment being higher at the southern part, where there are water input from Pereque River and higher organic matter of continental origin. The variability in the microbial population is discussed in the light of the sediment granulometry, organic matter quality, fresh water inflow and pollution.  相似文献

Dating the magmatism in the Montagne Noire gneiss dome in the southern French Massif Central is a key point for understanding the Late Palaeozoic evolution of this part of the Variscan belt, which is characterised by compressive tectonics during the Carboniferous and extensional tectonics during Stephanian-Permian times. The Montalet granite crops out in the north-western part of the dome and was first considered as an early syntectonic intrusion related to compressive deformation. More recently, it has been dated at 327 Ma and considered as contemporaneous with the diapiric ascent of the Montagne Noire gneiss dome before the Stephanian-Permian extension. We show that in fact, this pluton was emplaced 294 ± 1 Ma ago and is therefore contemporaneous with the Stephanian-Permian extension. This age is consistent with the interpretation of the Montagne Noire Massif as an extensional gneiss dome.  相似文献

Understanding the causes of variation in recruitment of marine fishes has been a central goal for marine ecologists, fishery scientists and resource managers over the last century. Although the idea that recruitment variability is linked to the pelagic environmental conditions that enhance larval growth, survival, and/or delivery is consensual, such relationship is poorly known for most species. In this study we analyzed patterns of recruitment and early life history of a temperate reef fish, Coris julis from the Azores archipelago to test the relationships between early life history and recruitment success over two consecutive years. Growth from hatch to larval age 30 d was the best predictor of recruitment, implying that fast growing larger-at-age larvae have a survival advantage and contribute more to high recruitment, supporting the “bigger-is-better” hypothesis. The “stage-duration” hypothesis and the predictions regarding the relationships between size at age (SAA), size at settlement (SAS) and recruit abundance were also partially supported. The results presented in this study highlight the importance of understanding the early life traits that determine recruitment and larval-survivorship patterns, especially early larval growth, as this may provide a basis for prediction of recruitment and thus management of resources.  相似文献

New, more detailed calculations of the emission spectra of the He-like Kα complex of calcium, iron and nickel have been carried out using data from both distorted-wave and R-matrix calculations. The value of the GD ratio (an extended definition of the G ratio that accounts for the effect of resolved and unresolved satellite lines) is significantly enhanced at temperatures below the temperature of He-like maximum abundance. Furthermore, it is shown that satellite lines are important contributors to the GD ratio such that   GD / G > 1  at temperatures well above the temperature of maximum abundance. These new calculations demonstrate, with an improved treatment of the KLn     satellite lines, that Kα satellite lines need to be included in models of He-like spectra even at relatively high temperatures. The excellent agreement between spectra and line ratios calculated from R-matrix and distorted-wave data also confirms the validity of models based on distorted-wave data for highly charged systems, provided the effect of resonances is taken into account as independent processes.  相似文献

Free-air gravity and bathymetric maps are routinely used for large-scale geological studies but rugged topography and varying shallow-depth conditions can complicate their usefulness in geological interpretations. It is crucial to reduce the gravity anomaly map to a common datum for regional correlation studies so that Bouguer anomalies can be more confidently interpreted to reveal subsurface bodies of exploration interest. However, Bouguer anomaly computation requires a precise knowledge of the shallow-depth density variation, while direct measurement of the near-surface density at every observation station is not feasible. A simple, objective indirect method for estimating the optimum density for Bouguer reduction is desirable. Using data from the Hotspur seamount and the Santos Basin offshore south-eastern Brazil, it is shown that correlating bathymetry and computed Bouguer anomaly for a range of densities provides a simple means for selecting the optimal density for Bouguer reduction. Unlike previous approaches, the use of angular differences between the gradients of bathymetric and Bouguer gravity maps is proposed to select the optimum density for reduction. Their standard deviations clearly define a minimum when the maps are least correlated, providing an objective metric for determining the optimum density for large-scale regional Bouguer reduction. The results improve the delineation of major features such as the Santos hinge line and the landward limit of the salt province in the Santos Basin.  相似文献

In a soil developed on the Cretaceous chalk of the Eastern Paris basin, calcite dissolution begins at the surface. The soil water is rapidly saturated in calcite. Calcite dissolution follows two different pathways according to seasonal pedoclimatic conditions.During winter: the soil is only partly saturated in water and the CO2 partial pressure is low (Ca 10?3 atm.). As a consequence total inorganic dissolved carbon (TIDC) is a hundred times the carbon content of the gaseous phase. Equilibrium is usually observed between the two phases. It is a closed system. The measured carbon 14 activity (87,5%) and 13C content (δtidc13C = ?12,2%0) of the drainage water are very close to theoretical values calculated for an ideal mixing system between gaseous and mineral phases (respectively characterized by the following isotopic values: δG13C = ?21,5%0; AG14C = 118%; δM13C = +2,9%0; AM14C = 28%).During spring and summer: the soil moisture decreases, the input of biogenic CO2 induces an increase of the soil CO2 partial pressure (Ca from 3.10?3 atm to 7.10?3 atm). The carbon content of the gaseous phase is higher by an order of magnitude compared to winter conditions. Therefore the aqueous phase is undersaturated in CO2 with respect to the latter. This disequilibrium occurs as a result of unbalanced rates of CO2 dissolution and CO2 effusion toward atmosphère. It is an open system. The carbon isotopic ratio of the aqueous phase is regulated by that of the gaseous phase, as demonstrated by the agreement between measured and calculated isotopic compositions (respectively δL mes = from ?9,4%0 to ?11,5%0, δl calc = from ?9,8%0 to ?13,9%0 AL mes = 119%, AL calc = from 119% to 125%).The solutions originating from both systems (open and closed) move downwards without significant mixing together. It has also been observed that no significant variation of the TIDC isotopic composition occurs during precipitation of secondary calcite.  相似文献
