Laboratory flume experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of particle density on bedload transport of sand‐sized particles and the effect of a suspended load of clay particles (kaolinite) on bedload transport of sand‐sized particles in rill flow conditions. Three materials in the range 400–600 µm were selected to simulate bedload transport of primary particles and aggregates: sand (2650 kg/m3), crushed brick (2450 kg/m3) and anthracite (1300–1700 kg/m3). In the two first experiments, two different methods were applied to determine bedload transport capacity of coarse particles for various conditions of flow discharge (from 2 to 15 L/min) and slope (2.2, 3 and 4%). In the third experiment, clear water was replaced with kaolinite–water mixture and bedload transport capacity of crushed brick particles was determined for a 4% slope and different concentrations of kaolinite (0, 7, 41 and 84 g/L). The results showed that bedload transport increased significantly with the decrease in particle density but the effect of particle density on transport rates was much less important than flow discharge. Velocity measurements of clear flow, flow mixed with coarse particles and coarse particles confirmed the existence of a differentiation between suspended load and bedload. In these experimental conditions, suspended load of kaolinite did not affect bedload rates of crushed brick particles. Three transport capacity formulae were tested against observed bedload rates. A calibration of the Foster formula revealed that the shear stress exponent should be greater than 1.5. The Low and the Govers unit stream power (USP) equations were then evaluated. The Low equation was preferred for the prediction of bedload rates of primary particles but it was not recommended in the case of aggregates of low density because of the limited experimental conditions applied to derive this equation. Former hydrological studies in the Amazon Basin generally describe annual discharge variability on the main stem. However, the downstream Amazon River only represents the mean state of the Amazonian hydrological system. This study therefore uses a new data set including daily discharge in 18 sub-basins to analyze the variability of regional extremes in the Amazon basin, after recalling the diversity of the hydrological annual cycles within the Amazon basin. Several statistical tests are applied in order to detect trends and breaks in the time series. We show that during the 1974–2004 period, the stability of the mean discharge on the main stem in Óbidos is explained by opposite regional features that principally involve Andean rivers: a decrease in the low stage runoff, particularly important in the southern regions, and an increase in the high stage runoff in the northwestern region. Both features are observed from the beginning of the nineties. These features are also observed in smaller meridian sub-basins in Peru and Bolivia. Moreover we show that the changes in discharge extremes are related to the regional pluriannual rainfall variability and the associated atmospheric circulation as well as to tropical large-scale climatic indicators. 相似文献

A deterministic method for sensitivity analysis is developed and applied to a mathematical model for the simulation of flow in porous media. The method is based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the Jacobian matrix of the model. It is a local approach to sensitivity analysis providing a hierarchical classification of the directions in both the input space and of those in the output space reflecting the degree of sensitiveness of the latter to the former. Its low computational cost, in comparison with that of statistical approaches, allows the study of the variability of the results of the sensitivity analysis due to the variations of the input parameters of the model, and thus it can provide a quality criterion for the validity of more classical probabilistic global approaches. For the example treated here, however, this variability is weak, and deterministic and statistical methods yield similar sensitivity results. 相似文献

Estimating suspended sediment concentrations from turbidity measurements and the calibration problem 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In situ turbidity meters are being increasingly used to generate continuous records of suspended sediment concentration in rivers. However, the usefulness of the information obtained depends heavily on the existence of a close relationship between fluctuations in suspended sediment concentration and turbidity and the calibration procedure that relates suspended sediment concentration to the turbidity meter's signal. This study assesses the relationship between suspended sediment concentration and turbidity for a small (1·19 km2) rural catchment in southern Brazil and evaluates two calibration methods by comparing the estimates of suspended sediment concentration obtained from the calibrated turbidity readings with direct measurements obtained using a USDH 48 suspended sediment sampler. With the first calibration method, the calibration relationship is derived by relating the turbidity readings to simultaneous measurements of concentration obtained from suspended sediment samples collected from the vicinity of the turbidity probe during flood events. With the second method, the calibration is based on the readings obtained from the turbidity meter when the probe immersed in samples of known concentration prepared using soils collected from the catchment. Overall, there was a close link between fluctuations in suspended sediment concentration and turbidity in the stream at the outlet of the catchment, and the estimates of sediment concentration obtained using the first calibration method corresponded closely with the conventionally measured sediment concentrations. However, use of the second calibration method introduced appreciable errors. When the estimated sediment concentrations were compared with the measured values, the mean errors were ± 122 mg l?1 and + 601 mg l?1 for the first and second calibration procedures respectively. Seven vibro-cores were collected from three shallow lakes of the Gabon (Kamalété, Nguène, Maridor) along a 300-km west–east
transect close to the Equator. These lakes are located in very distinct landscapes: coastal forest-savanna mosaic, rain forest
and savanna with colonising forest, respectively. Core chronologies were established by radiocarbon dating. Study of these
lacustrine archives (textural variables, clay minerals, organic matter components, δ13C, pollen) allowed comparison of late Holocene environmental changes recorded at each site and with results from other studies.
Lake Kamalété indicates minor climatic deterioration (increased drying and greater seasonality) between 1,410 and 500 cal.
years BP, which is also recognised in southern Cameroon and east-central Africa. Lake Nguène was surrounded by dense moist
forest throughout the last 4,110 years, but shows significant deterioration from ~2,800 cal. years BP, a phenomenon seen at
nearby sites. Lake Maridor shows a decline of forest initiated a little after 3,800 cal. years BP, which indicates timing
that is distinct from the two other sites. This was probably a response to local conditions (i.e. outlet damming). Although
the three lakes display generally parallel climatic trends perhaps linked to SST oscillations, there is not perfect coherence
between these three sites. Differences among the three basins may be attributable to local factors like groundwater hydrology

The Pakistan 2005 earthquake, of magnitude 7.6, caused severe damage on landscape and infrastructure, in addition to numerous
casualties. The event reactivated Hattian Slide, creating a rock avalanche in a location where earlier mass movements had
happened already, as indicated by satellite imagery and ground investigation. The slide originated on Dana Hill, in the upper
catchment area of Hattian on Karli Stream, a tributary of Jhelum River, Pakistan, and buried the hamlet Dandbeh and several
farms nearby. A natural dam accumulated, impounding two lakes, the larger one threatening parts of downstream Hattian Village
with flooding. An access road and artificial spillways needed to be constructed in very short time to minimize the flooding
risk. As shown by this example, when pointing out the risk of large-scale damage to population and infrastructure by way of
hazard indication maps of seismically active regions, and preparing for alleviation of that risk, it is advisable to consider

Shear effects are often a very important issue on the seismic behaviour of piers, particularly for hollow section bridge piers.
In fact, for this type of piers the cyclic response is similar to that of a structural wall in which both the transverse reinforcement
ratio and the detailing can play an important role on its performance, even likely to be determinant in terms of the failure
mechanism. On the other hand, codes and design guidelines are usually very conservative concerning shear capacity in order
to avoid any shear failure mechanism likely to trigger well known catastrophic consequences. Therefore, research studies on
this topic are still needed for a better understanding of pier cyclic shear response and also for improvement of the performance
under seismic actions. Pursuing this general objective, this paper partially reports on an experimental/numerical campaign
carried out on 1:4 reduced scale bridge piers in order to highlight and investigate shear-type problems. Within the scope
of this paper, two specimens types were selected having equal rectangular hollow section (900 × 450 mm2, 75 mm thick) but different transverse reinforcement detailing, namely one with a single stirrup per wall (representative
of typical bridge construction without seismic design requirements) and another with multiple stirrups, according to Eurocode
8 provisions. Numerical simulations of the experimental results were also conducted aiming at contributing for complete and
consistent interpretations of experimental results. Detailed modelling was performed allowing for realistic simulations of
the non linear behaviour, particularly suitable when a significant shear component is involved. Therefore, the numerical strategy
was based on a detailed 3D FEM discretization using a two-scalar variable damage model for the concrete constitutive law and
a suitable cyclic behaviour law for steel bars represented by truss elements. Results have shown that shear deformation and
failure modes are well simulated, while providing detailed insight concerning concrete damage pattern and distribution of
yielding on the transverse and longitudinal reinforcement. 相似文献
