We reanalyzed a model introduced by T. R. Madden for the evaluation of the state of connectivity among the microcrack population existing inside crystalline rocks. The model assumes that cracks are distributed randomly in a cubic lattice with a basic occupation probability, p.Depending on the value of p, the stale of connectivity can give rise to macroscopic paths, which allow electrical conduction of the sample, or to extended crack surfaces, which would be responsible for rock failure. The position of the phase boundaries, that is, the threshold values of pfor the onset of conductivity or macroscopic fracture, are estimated by a real-space renormalizalion-group (RG) technique. By identifying all the relevant configurations of the lattice model, we have been able to provide explicit analytic formulae for the critical lines. The criterion used by Madden to accept the existence of microscopic linear connectivity is modified and the new consequences discussed. We analyze the limitations of simple versions of the RG technique, in particular when concerned with anisotropic spatial distributions of cracks. Finally, we emphasize the interest of acquiring experimental data, especially to test the position of the conduction thresholds. 相似文献

In the last years, the interest in explaining the existence of a singularity at low frequencies ( = 0) in the differential cross section of photon scattering by electrons, in a homogeneous magnetic field, for the transitions between the Landau levelsN = 1 andN = 0, has greatly increased. This study presents a detailed discrimination between the natural and anthropogenic sources of dissolved major elements in the Têt River, a typical small coastal river in the south of France. The main objectives were to quantify the materials that were released by human activities in the basin, and to determine the specific element inputs for the major land use forms. The dissolved material fluxes were estimated by weekly monitoring over a hydrological year (2000–2001) along the major water gauging stations, and the flux relationships were examined in the context of anthropogenic and natural basin characteristics as determined by a Geographical Information System (GIS). Intensive agricultural land use in the form of fruit tree cultures and vineyards has a strong control on the dissolved element fluxes in the river. Area specific element releases for these cultures are greatest for SO4, with an estimated average of about 430 ± 18 keq km−2 a−1. This is ?11 times the natural SO4 release by rock weathering. Also for K, NO3, PO4 and Mg, the specific releases were ?6 times the natural weathering rates (respectively about 44, 60, 4 and 265 keq km−2 a−1). Waste-waters are the other major source of anthropogenic elements in the river. They have an important role for the fluxes of inorganic P and N, but they are also a considerable source of Cl and Na to the river. For example, the average annual release of Cl is around 150 moles/inhabitant in the rural basin parts. Further downstream, however, where population density strongly increases, industrial effluents can enhance this value (>300 moles/inhabitant). The waste-waters contribute more than 70% of the dissolved inorganic N export to the sea, although their contribution to the average DOC export is almost negligible (3%). 相似文献

The present study reports on perturbations of the water column by large rainfall at Lake Alchichica, a saline lake in Central
Mexico. Alchichica is located in the “Llanos de San Juan,” a high-altitude plateau with a minimum elevation of 2,300 m above
sea level. The climate is arid with annual precipitation less than 400 mm and annual evaporation of 500–600 mm. A single day
large rainfall event delivered 1,810,000 m3 of water to the basin, raising the lake’s water level by about 1 m. Temperature and salinity profiles showed an atypical
temperature inversion up to 1°C in the upper layer accompanied by salinity decrease up to 0.5 g l−1. Transparency and pH were slightly altered, but dissolved oxygen, nutrients and chlorophyll a concentrations were not changed. In spite of the heavy rainfall and associated wind, the effects of the event were limited
to the upper half of the epilimnion. After 2 days, the lake water level returned to its original level. The rapid leakage

= 6.0 mainshock at Parkfield, California, has significantly increased the mean and aperiodicity of the series of time intervals between mainshocks in this segment of the San Andreas fault. We use five different statistical distributions as renewal models to fit this new series and to estimate the time-dependent probability of the next Parkfield mainshock. Three of these distributions (lognormal, gamma and Weibull) are frequently used in reliability and time-to-failure problems. The other two come from physically-based models of earthquake recurrence (the Brownian Passage Time Model and the Minimalist Model). Carbon stable isotope ratios were determined in dominant biotic components of pelagic and littoral systems in Alchichica crater-lake.
Results showed that carbon signatures were significantly different between both systems. The pelagic environment was more
depleted (−26.15 to −15.14 per mille) than the littoral zone (−21.03 to −17.91 per mille). The potential source end-point
in the simplified pelagic community was established to be diatomaceous phytoplankton; its predicted value was −21.7 per mille.
There is a clear evidence thatNodularia does not sustain the pelagic food chain. In contrast, the highly diverse littoral community was sustained by epiphytes. No
allochthonous sources seemed to influence this food web.13C enrichment was observed along the components of both systems with fractionations of 0.8 to 1.4 per mille. The contribution
of the seagrassRuppia maritima is probably associated with the detritus pathway. Carbon source partitioning between both systems was not recorded. The δ13C in Alchichica crater-lake was more enriched than in other saline lakes and could be attributed to different salinity and

An engineering approach is proposed for representing both site effects and soil-structure interaction in extended alluvial valleys, by using the one-dimensional model of shear were propagation corrected empirically to account for lateral heterogeneities and generated surface waves. The peak structural response is expressed by means of spectral contours that are a function of the predominant period of the site and the fundamental period of the structure. Variations of the peak spectral ordinates with the prevailing site period can be deduced from these contours. A number of events of firm ground, representative of the most dangerous earthquakes expected in Mexico City, are assumed as design earthquakes. Making use of the resulting spectral contours, the provisions for site effects recommended in the Mexican seismic code are evaluated. Also, considering as control motion the 1985 Michoacan earthquake recorded at a representative firm site, spectral contours with soil-structure interaction are obtained which allow one to identify the significant interaction effects originating in the Valley of Mexico for medium- and long-period structures. The mordenite ore deposit of Los Escullos has a surface area of 106 m2 with an average thickness of 5 m and estimated reserves of 7,500,000 tons of mordenite–bentonite. It is made up of horizontal layers of interbedded epiclastic tuffs with volcanic bentonitised materials which have been subjected to hydromagmatic activity. The layers are essentially composed of bentonite and mordenite with lesser amounts of quartz, cristobalite, biotite, plagioclase, chlorite, amphiboles, titanomagnetite, ilmenite and calcite. The harder layers display a higher proportion of plagioclase crystals and are enriched in Al2O3, CaO, Fe2O3, TiO2, P2O5, Cu, Zn, Co, Cr, Ni and V, while the more altered layers contain larger contents of SiO2, K2O and Y. The amount of sodium increases (from 2% to 4%) relative to depth. Alteration processes resulted in a reduction in the contents of CaO, K2O and MnO and increase in Na2O and MgO. The beds of volcanic ash-tuffs have been devitrified by hydrothermal solutions giving rise to bentonites and sodium- and silica-rich residual fluids which have partly crystallized as mordenite and cristobalite. The raw material (mordenite–bentonite) can be improved removing biotite (magnetic separation) and plagioclase and quartz (by floating methods); however, the mordenite–bentonite mineral assemblage is practically impossible to separate due to the size of the crystals (average 0.5 μm under SEM–EDAX). In turn, this upgraded raw material has very useful properties (total area=520 m2/g and cation exchange capacity=70 meq/100 g) which may make it suitable for use in absorption processes (e.g. deodorization, cationic exchange), catalysis and molecular sieving. 相似文献
