We present calculations for the evolution and surviving mass of highly-irradiated extrasolar giant planets (EGPs) at orbital semimajor axes ranging from 0.023 to 0.057 AU using a generalized scaled theory for mass loss, together with new surface-condition grids for hot EGPs and a consistent treatment of tidal truncation. Theoretical estimates for the rate of energy-limited hydrogen escape from giant-planet atmospheres differ by two orders of magnitude, when one holds planetary mass, composition, and irradiation constant. Baraffe et al. [Baraffe, I., Selsis, F., Chabrier, G., Barman, T.S., Allard, F., Hauschildt, P.H., Lammer, H., 2004. Astron. Astrophys. 419, L13-L16] predict the highest rate, based on the theory of Lammer et al. [Lammer, H., Selsis, F., Ribas, I., Guinan, E.F., Bauer, S.J., Weiss, W.W., 2003. Astrophys. J. 598, L121-L124]. Scaling the theory of Watson et al. [Watson, A.J., Donahue, T.M., Walker, J.C.G., 1981. Icarus 48, 150-166] to parameters for a highly-irradiated exoplanet, we find an escape rate ∼102 lower than Baraffe's. With the scaled Watson theory we find modest mass loss, occurring early in the history of a hot EGP. In this theory, mass loss including the effect of Roche-lobe overflow becomes significant primarily for masses below a Saturn mass, for semimajor axes ?0.023 AU. This contrasts with the Baraffe model, where hot EGPs are claimed to be remnants of much more massive bodies, originally several times Jupiter and still losing substantial mass fractions at present. 相似文献

Obliquely propagating nonlinear structures in dense dissipative electron positron ion magnetoplasmas
Nonlinear electrostatic waves in dense dissipative magnetized electron-positron-ion (e-p-i) plasmas are investigated employing
the quantum hydrodynamic model. In this regard, Zakharov Kuznetsov Burgers (ZKB) equation is derived in dense plasmas using
the small amplitude perturbation expansion method. It is observed that obliqueness, positron concentration, kinematic viscosity,
and the ambient magnetic field significantly alter the structure of nonlinear quantum ion acoustic waves in dense dissipative
e-p-i magnetoplasmas. The present study may be useful to understand the nonlinear propagation characteristics of electrostatic

New images of the supernova remnant (SNR) G351.7+0.8 are presented based on 21-cm H i -line emission and continuum emission data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey. SNR G351.7+0.8 has a flux density of 8.4 ± 0.7 Jy at 1420 MHz. Its spectral index is 0.52 ± 0.25 ( S = v −α ) between 1420 and 843 MHz, typical of adiabatically expanding shell-like remnants. H i observations show structures possibly associated with the SNR in the radial velocity range of −10 to −18 km s−1 , and suggest a distance of 13.2 kpc and a radius of 30.7 pc. The estimated Sedov age for G351.7+0.8 is less than 6.8×104 yr . A young radio pulsar PSR J1721−3532 lies close to SNR G351.7+0.8 on the sky. The new distance and age of G351.7+0.8 and recent proper motion measurements of the pulsar strongly argue against an association between SNR G351.7+0.8 and PSR J1721−3532. There is an unidentified, faint X-ray point source 1RXS J172055.3−353937 which is close to G351.7+0.8. This may be a neutron star potentially associated with G351.7+0.8. 相似文献

The differing M bh – L relations presented in McLure & Dunlop, Marconi & Hunt and Erwin et al. have been investigated. A number of issues have been identified and addressed in each of these studies, including but not limited to the removal of a dependency on the Hubble constant, a correction for dust attenuation in the bulges of disc galaxies, the identification of lenticular galaxies previously treated as elliptical galaxies and the application of the same ( Y ∣ X ) regression analysis. These adjustments result in relations which now predict similar black hole masses. The optimal K -band relation is log( M bh /M⊙ ) =−0.37(±0.04)( M K + 24) + 8.29(±0.08) , with a total (not intrinsic) scatter in log M bh equal to 0.33 dex. This level of scatter is similar to the value of 0.34 dex from the relation of Tremaine et al. and compares favourably with the value of 0.31 dex from the M bh – n relation of Graham & Driver. Using different photometric data, consistent relations in the B and R band are also provided, although we do note that the small ( N = 13) R -band sample used by Erwin et al. is found here to have a slope of −0.30 ± 0.06. Performing a symmetrical regression on the larger K -band sample gives a slope of ∼−0.40, implying M bh ∝ L 1.00 . Implications for galaxy–black hole co-evolution, in terms of dry mergers, are briefly discussed, as are the predictions for intermediate mass black holes. Finally, as noted by others, a potential bias in the galaxy sample used to define the M bh – L relations is shown and a corrective formula provided. 相似文献

Ions heavier than 4He are treated as “minors” in the solar wind. This is justified for many applications since minor ions have no significant
influence on the dynamics of the interplanetary plasma. However, minor ions carry information on many aspects of the formation,
on the acceleration and on the transfer of solar plasma from the corona into the interplanetary space. This review concentrates
on various aspects of minor ions as diagnostic tracers. The elemental abundance patterns of the solar wind are shaped in the
chromosphere and in the lower transition region by processes, which are not fully understood at this moment. Despite this
lack of detailed understanding, observed abundance patterns have been classified and are now commonly used to characterize
the sources, and to trace back solar-wind flows to their origins in the solar atmosphere. Furthermore, the solar wind is the
most important source of information for solar isotopic abundances and for solar abundances of volatile elements. In order
to fully exploit this information, a comprehensive understanding of elemental and isotopic fractionation processes is required.

We present the characteristics and demonstrate the performance of the Triple Etalon SOlar Spectrometer (TESOS) operated at the German Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) on Tenerife. The Fabry–Pérot interferometer TESOS is ideally suited for precise measurements of photospheric and chromospheric motion. Installed in 1997 and equipped with two etalons, TESOS has recently been completed with a third etalon and upgraded with two high-speed, backside-illuminated CCD cameras. The image scale of 0.089 arc sec pixel–1 is adapted to the resolution of the telescope. The improved system enables frame rates up to 5 frames per second. The spectral resolution of 300000 allows for spectral diagnostics of weak photospheric lines, including individual CH-lines within the G-band at 430.6 nm. 相似文献

Speculative connections have been made between Sakurai's Object andother hydrogen-deficient stars, principally the RCB stars and [WC]central stars of planetary nebulae. RCBs have also been postulated as the precursors of extreme helium stars (EHes). The question arises to whether Sakurai's Object will evolve down the [WC]-PG1159 evolution track, or the RCB-EHe-HesdO track. From a number of IUE observations, we have measured thesecular contraction rates and pulsation masses of several EHes. These are inconsistent with the predicted contraction rates for helium-shell burning giants produced by a final helium-shell flash (the [WC]-PG1159 track). Although there may be some similarities between Sakurai's Object and some RCBs, if the RCB-EHe conection is valid then these must be superficial rather than structural. 相似文献

We present the results of high-resolution AP3 M+SPH simulations of merging clusters of galaxies. We find that the compression and shocking of the core gas during a merger can lead to large increases in bolometric X-ray luminosities and emission-weighted temperatures of clusters. Cooling flows are completely disrupted during equal-mass mergers, with the mass deposition rate dropping to zero as the cores of the clusters collide. The large increase in the cooling time of the core gas strongly suggests that cooling flows will not recover from such a merger within a Hubble time. Mergers with subclumps having one eighth of the mass of the main cluster are also found to disrupt a cooling flow if the merger is head-on. However, in this case the entropy injected into the core gas is rapidly radiated away and the cooling flow restarts within a few Gyr of the merger. Mergers in which the subcluster has an impact parameter of 500 kpc do not disrupt the cooling flow, although the mass deposition rate is reduced by ∼30 per cent. Finally, we find that equal mass, off-centre mergers can effectively mix gas in the cores of clusters, while head on mergers lead to very little mixing. Gas stripped from the outer layers of subclumps results in parts of the outer layers of the main cluster being well mixed, although they have little effect on the gas in the core of the cluster. None of the mergers examined here resulted in the intracluster medium being well mixed globally. 相似文献

We have carried out a survey for 'giant pulses' in six young, Vela-like pulsars. In no cases did we find single pulses with flux densities more than 10 times the mean flux density. However, in PSR B1706–44 we have detected giant micro-pulses very similar to those seen in the Vela pulsar. In PSR B1706–44 these giant micro-pulses appear on the trailing edge of the profile and have an intrinsic width of ∼1 ms. The cumulative probability distribution of their intensities is best described by a power law. If the power law continues to higher intensities, then 3.7×106 rotations are required to obtain a pulse with 20× the mean pulse flux. This number is similar to the giant pulse rate in PSR B1937+21 and PSR B1821–24 but significantly higher than that for the Crab. 相似文献
