Arma models for earthquake ground motions

This paper outlines the use of discrete, autoregressive/moving-average (ARMA) models for identification and estimation of parameters in models derived from analysis of uniformly digitized earthquake ground motion acceleration data. Such models are of equal generality as compared to continuous-time models and have a number of significant advantages for purposes of digital analysis and simulation. The structure of ARMA models is briefly described, their relation to continuous models noted, and results of their application to a number of recorded accelerograms summarized.     

Theoretical organic geochemistry. I. The thermodynamic stability of several cholestane isomers calculated by molecular mechanics

The thermodynamic stabilities of thirteen cholestane isomers have been computed using molecular mechanics. The calculated composition of a mixture of these isomers at thermodynamic equilibrium is in agreement with the composition of a cholestane isomerate. From the calculated stabilities the extent to which isomerisation reactions can proceed during maturation can be predicted. The GLC retention order on non-polar phases of 20R/S isomeric pairs has been estimated from the preferred geometries of the molecules which are also obtained by molecular mechanics.     

MELIMEX,an experimental heavy metal pollution study: Effects of increased heavy metal loads on phytoplankton communities

Long-term impacts of increased metal loading (Hg, Cu, Cd, Zn and Pb) on phytoplankton communities of large limno-corrals (diameter 12 m, depth 10 m) were studied. Increased metal concentrations initially lowered phytoplankton biomass, as well as species number and photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton. They caused changes in metal speciation and shifts in phytoplankton community structure, favoring less susceptible species. Although adaptation was not sufficient to completely prevent the metal-induced depression of photosynthesis, due to depressed zooplankton grazing, at the end of the experiment even higher phytoplankton densities were observed in the metal-loaded corrals than in the control.     

Conditions of generation of a stationary dipole magnetic field

Summary With the aid of the selected spherical model the conditions of generation of a stationary magnetic dipole field in a fluid electrically conducting spherical region, bounded by an outer unconducting region, are derived. It is assumed that there exist turbulent motions in the conducting medium, as well as differential rotation. The induction MHD equation is solved under appropriate boundary conditions. It was found that a stationary dipole field may only be generated at a certain positive value of the coefficient G which characterizes the geometric and physical parameters of the conducting region. If this coefficient is zero, the amplitudes of the magnetic fields decrease exponentially with time.
