Effects of presence of a circumpolar region on buoyancy-driven circulation

Effects of the presence of a circumpolar region on buoyancy-driven circulation are investigated by using an idealized numerical ocean model. Comparison of circulation and meridional density (heat) transport is made between a closed ocean and an ocean with a cyclic gap near its southern boundary. The presence of the circumpolar region leads to disconnection of the meridional overturning across the circumpolar region. And the circumpolar eastward flow reaches the bottom of the ocean. It is essential for this that the pycnocline is deeper than the bottom of the gap. Since the amount of the mass transported northward must return southward at the levels deeper than the bottom of the cyclic gap, the weak stratification, hence weak vertical geostrophic shear, at the deeper levels leads to inactive communication across the circumpolar region. Meridional heat transport across the circumpolar region is made mainly by horizontal diffusion for the ocean with the cyclic gap, while the contribution of the advection is dominant for the closed ocean. Sensitivity of meridional heat transport to change in horizontal diffusivity is studied. The meridional heat transport for the ocean with the cyclic gap is more sensitive than for the closed ocean. The change in heat transport occurs not only in the circumpolar region but also in the rest of the ocean. It is suggested that subgrid scale phenomena, especially mesoscale eddies, in the circumpolar region controls the whole ocean to a great extent.     

Mussel Periostracum from Deep-Sea Redox Communities as a Microbial Habitat: 3. Secondary Inhabitants

Abstract. Vacated microborings in periostracum of live mussels of the Florida Escarpment redox community (depth of 3266 m) become a habitat for a prolific secondary microbiota consisting of a variety of prokaryotic and a few eukaryotic organisms. Periostracum surface is also colonized by diverse microorganisms, dominated by presumed chemolithotrophic bacteria with stacks of intracellular lamellae. Unlike sheltered microflora within borings, the surface community is heavily grazed upon by numerous archaeogastropods and ciliates.     

A comparison of fisheries policy and management in the European Community and Eastern Canada

The fisheries systems which have developed in the European Economic Community (EEC) and Eastern Canada show striking similarities and contrasts. Both show efforts directed at conserving the resource base while setting limits for annual catches and allocating shares in these catches among fishermen. Canada has had less pressure on its resources and has been more successful in restraining over-fishing tendencies; it also has a more fully co-ordinated and effective management system. On the other hand the EEC has greater efficiency in catching, marketing and processing, and in recent times has had less government aid. Better systems would combine Canadian management efficiency with EEC economic efficiency.     

Detection of buried targets using a synthetic aperture sonar

This paper presents observations of buried target detections made using a 20-kHz synthetic aperture sonar. At grazing angles below the critical angle, surprisingly high signal-to-noise detections were made of cylindrical targets buried at depths of 15 and 50 cm. During a separate set of measurements, buried spheres were clearly seen at steep grazing angles, but were generally not seen below the critical angle. Since scattering from wave-generated sand ripples may contribute to detections at grazing angles below critical angle, the information available on the ripple fields is discussed and used in acoustic backscatter simulations for the buried spheres. Lack of information on the ripple height precludes a definitive explanation for the absence of buried sphere detections at subcritical grazing angles.     

The uptake and accumulation of Ni by Cerastoderma edule and its effect on mortality,body condition and respiration rate

The concentration of Ni in C. edule ranges from 17·8 μg/g to 53·82 μg/g with the highest concentration in the gills and mantle and the lowest in the foot and adductor muscles. The concentration does not change with either size or season.There is no significant increase in mortality even in the highest Ni concentration (100 μg/litre), nor is body condition correlated with experimental Ni concentrations. The rate of uptake of Ni (y) is described by the equation:

where x₁ = Ni concentration (μg/litre) and x₂ = time (h).The respiration rates did not significantly change up to the highest Ni concentration used (1000 μg/litre).It is postulated that the main pathway for Ni uptake is through the gills, possibly through mucus sheet or transmembrane absorption, with a secondary uptake route via the viscera.C. edule may therefore be a suitable indicator species for Ni.     

Simplified method of deep-tow seismic profiling

To improve resolution of seismic-reflection profiles in continental slope water depths of 900 to 1500 m, a single hydrophone was towed about 150 m off the bottom to receive reflected signals from a surface-towed sparker sound source. That deep-towed hydrophone data show that valleys which appear V-shaped in records from a surface-towed hydrophone are flat-bottomed, and that subbottom reflections from an erosional unconformity can be much better resolved. The data produced by this technique are very hepful when used in conjunction with records from conventional surface-towed seismic-profiling equipment.
