This research investigates the seismic design method and the cyclic inelastic behavior of the bottom column, also called the vertical boundary element (VBE), in steel plate shear walls (SPSWs). This study consists of two parts. This Part 1 paper discusses the anticipated pushover responses for properly designed SPSWs and the possible inelastic responses of the bottom VBE at various levels of inter‐story drift. Considering both the tension field action of the infill panel and the sway action of the boundary frame, this study develops a simplified method to compute the flexural and shear demands in the bottom VBE. Based on the superposition method, this approach considers various plastic hinge forming locations at different levels of inter‐story drift. One of the key performance‐based design objectives is to ensure that the top ends of the bottom VBEs remain elastic when the SPSWs are subjected to the maximum considered earthquake. This paper presents the comprehensive design procedures for the bottom VBE. Furthermore, this study conducted cyclic performance evaluation tests of three full‐scale two‐story SPSWs at the Taiwan National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in 2011 to validate the effectiveness of the proposed design methods. This paper presents in-situ seismic performance tests of a bridge before its demolition due to accumulated scouring problem. The tests were conducted on three single columns and one caisson-type foundation. The three single columns were 1.8 m in diameter,reinforced by 30-D32 longitudinal reinforcements and laterally hooped by D16 reinforcements with spacing of 20 cm. The column height is 9.54 m,10.59 m and 10.37 m for Column P2,P3,and P4,respectively. Column P2 had no exposed foundation and was subjected to pseudo-dynamic tests with peak ground acceleration of 0.32 g first,followed by one cyclic loading test. Column P3 was the benchmark specimen with exposed length of 1.2 m on its foundation. The exposed length for Column P4 was excavated to 4 m,approximately 1/3 of the foundation length,to study the effect of the scouring problem to the column performance. Both Column P3 and Column P4 were subjected to cyclic loading tests. Based on the test results,due to the large dimension of the caisson foundation and the well graded gravel soil type that provided large lateral resistance,the seismic performance among the three columns had only minor differences. Lateral push tests were also conducted on the caisson foundation at Column P5. The caisson was 12 m long and had circular cross-sections whose diameters were 5 m in the upper portion and 4 m in the lower portion. An analytical model to simulate the test results was developed in the OpenSees platform. The analytical model comprised nonlinear flexural elements as well as nonlinear soil springs. The analytical results closely followed the experimental test results. A parametric study to predict the behavior of the bridge column with different ground motions and different levels of scouring on the foundation are also discussed. 相似文献

Patterns of septal insertion were analyzed in three species of Agetolites from the Upper Ordovician in Yushan County,Jiangxi Province of China.Agetolites is a peculiar coral possessing features of both tabulate(e.g.,mural pores)and rugose corals(e.g.,well-developed septa).Septal patterns have long been considered to be indicative of the origin of corals,and the pattern of septal insertion in Agetolites has been known to be typical of rugosans.This study,however,reveals that the patterns in Agetolites are rather random and cannot be an indication of its rugosan affinity.It is suggested that Agetolites probably has a closer phylogenetic relation with tabulates than with either rugosans or scleractinians.Two insertion patterns of the first six septa were detected(Types Ⅰ and Ⅱ).Type I is interpreted as scleractinian pattern whereas Type II as typical pattern of rugosans.Types 1 and 2 are septal patterns of the second stage recognized in this study.Type 1 insertion occurs in six sectors located in the center of each interseptal space,suggesting scleractinian pattern of insertion.Type 2 insertion occurs in four sectors that are comparable with alar and counter sectors in rugose corals.Four patterns of the third(Types A–D)and fourth stages(Types a–d)of septal insertion have also been recognized in Agetolites.Type A only occurs in two adjacent sectors possibly due to the incompleteness of septal development.Type B presents rugosan pattern.Types C and D resemble scleractinian pattern in most aspects.Types a,b,and c present no clear attribution to rugosan or scleractinian pattern probably due to the incompleteness of septal development whereas Type d is observable in rugose corals. 相似文献

Climate change detection, attribution, and prediction were studied for the surface temperature in the Northeast Asian region using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and three coupled-model simulations from ECHAM4/OPYC3, HadCM3, and CCCma GCMs (Canadian Centre for Climate Modeling and Analysis general circulation model). The Bayesian fingerprint approach was used to perform the detection and attribution test for the anthropogenic climate change signal associated with changes in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfate aerosol (SO42-) concentrations for the Northeast Asian temperature. It was shown that there was a weak anthropogenic climate change signal in the Northeast Asian temperature change. The relative contribution of CO2 and SO42- effects to total temperature change in Northeast Asia was quantified from ECHAM4/OPYC3 and CCCma GCM simulations using analysis of variance. Land use changes such as urbanization, agriculture, pasturing, deforestation, desertification and irrigation can change the land surface heat flux directly, and also change the atmospheric circulation indirectly, and therefore affect the local temperature. But it is difficult to separate their effects from climate trends such as greenhouse-gas effects. Comparing the decadal trends of the observation station data with those of the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis (NNR) data provides a good method to separate the effects because the NNR is insensitive to land surface changes. The effects of urbanization and other land use changes over China are estimated by using the difference between the station and the NNR surface temperature trends. Our results show that urbanization and other land use changes may contribute to the observed 0.12℃ (10 yr)- 1 increase for daily mean surface temperature, and the 0.20℃ (10 yr)- 1 and 0.03℃ (10 yr)-1 increases for the daily minimum and maximum surface temperatures, respectively. The urban heat island effect and the effects of other land-use changes mayalso play an important role in the diurnal temperature range change. The spatial pattern of the differences in trends shows a marked heterogeneity.The land surface degradation such as deforestation and desertification due to human activities over northern China, and rapidly-developed urbanization over southern China, may have mostly contributed to the increases at stations north of about 38°N and in Southeast China, respectively. Furthermore, the vegetation cover increase due to irrigation and fertilization may have contributed to the decreasing trend of surface temperature over the lower Yellow River Basin. The Mawsmai cave and Krem Phyllut caves, East Khasi hills, Meghalaya, India has so far not yet attracted the attention of
geomicrobiologists. Observations and hypotheses on the possible influence of identified microorganisms for speleothem formations
in Meghalaya are reported for the first time. XRD studies identified calcite in speleothems and gypsum in cave wall deposits
as the dominant minerals. SEM-EDAX showed interesting microfabric features showing strong resemblance with fossilised bacteria,
calcified filaments, needle calcite and numerous nano scale calcite crystals, highly weathered and disintegrated crystals
of calcite, that point towards a significant microbial influence in its genesis. Thin section petrography showed laminated
stromatolitic features. The microorganisms identified by conventional isolation and further evaluation of isolates by molecular
techniques include Bacillus cereus, Bacillus mycoides, Bacillus licheniformis, Micrococcus luteus, and Actinomycetes. Microscopic observations also showed unidentifiable cocci and four unidentifiable strains of CaSO4 (gypsum) precipitating bacteria. Experimental studies confirmed that these bacteria are able to precipitate calcium minerals
(calcite, gypsum, minor amounts of dolomite) in the laboratory. These results allow us to postulate that species like these

This paper studies the dynamic responses of SDOF system under pulse-dominant excitations. The purpose of the study is to prepare for scrutiny of some near-field pulse-dominant ground motions and their potential to cause structural damage. Extending the single pulse dynamics, we consider the effect of pulse sequences. This kind of excitation was particularly obvious in some of previous earthquakes such as Northridge (1994) and Chi-Chi (1995). Based on the duration,peak and rise and decay era of the main pulse as well as its relationship with the predecessor and successor pulses, we propose a classification for the pulse sequences. Consequent studies have been carried out for acceleration, velocity and displacement response spectra of the main pulse with either a predecessor or a successor pulse. The analysis also includes general response behaviors in different fundamental period segments and special aspects of response at certain points (e.g., the corresponding peak points). 相似文献

The atmospheric mass density of the upper atmosphere from the spherical Starlette satellite’s Precise Orbit Determination
is first derived with Satellite Laser Ranging measurements at 815 to 1115 km during strong solar and geomagnetic activities.
Starlette’s orbit is determined using the improved orbit determination techniques combining optimum parameters with a precise
empirical drag application to a gravity field. MSIS-86 and NRLMSISE-00 atmospheric density models are compared with the Starlette
drag-derived atmospheric density of the upper atmosphere. It is found that the variation in the Starlette’s drag coefficient
above 800 km corresponds well with the level of geomagnetic activity. This represents that the satellite orbit is mainly perturbed
by the Joule heating from geomagnetic activity at the upper atmosphere. This result concludes that MSIS empirical models strongly
underestimate the mass density of the upper atmosphere as compared to the Starlette drag-derived atmospheric density during
the geomagnetic storms. We suggest that the atmospheric density models should be analyzed with higher altitude acceleration
data for a better understanding of long-term solar and geomagnetic effects. 相似文献

SWAN, the all-sky hydrogen Lyman-alpha camera on the SOHO spacecraft, designed primarily to image the interplanetary neutral hydrogen around the Sun, also observes comets continuously over large portions of their apparitions to the north and south of the ecliptic and at small solar elongation angles. Because of SOHO’s location at the L1 Lagrange point, analysis of SWAN images provides excellent temporal coverage of water production. We report here our results of observations of some interesting target comets selected from the extensive SWAN archive. These include three Oort Cloud Comets C/2002 V1 (NEAT), C/2002 X5 (Kudo–Fujikawa), C/2006 P1 (McNaught) and three apparitions of atypical short-period Comet 96P/Machholz 1. The common aspect of these four comets is their small perihelion distances, which are 0.19, 0.09, 0.17, and 0.12 AU, respectively. Their water production rates over their whole apparitions can be approximated by power laws in heliocentric distance (r in AU) as follows: 1.3 × 1029 r−2.1 s−1 for C/2002 V1 (NEAT), 7.5 × 1028 r−2.0 s−1 for C/2002 X5 (Kudo–Fujikawa), 5.4 × 1029 r−2.4 s−1 for C/2006 (P1 McNaught) and 4.6 × 1027 r−2.1 s−1 for 96P/Machholz 1. We also present daily-average water production rates for the long-period comets over long continuous time periods. We examine these results in light of our growing survey of comets that is yielding some interesting comparisons of water production rate variations with heliocentric distance and taxonomic classes. 相似文献
