Essential nutrients for seagrass growth may be derived from benthic decomposition of organic matter. To test this idea, cores of Halophila ovalis (seagrass-vegetated) and unvegetated sediment (control) were amended with either particulate organic matter (POM) or dissolved organic matter (DOM) to test whether a positive feed-back loop exists, where increased organic matter results in increased seagrass nutrients. POM was added in the form of seagrass wrack (0, 1, 5, 12 g core−1) and DOM was added with sucrose diffusion tubes at the root zone (0, 0.8, 2.4, 5.2 g core−1). Cores were incubated under saturating light conditions (12 h light/12 h dark) at 18 °C, for 4 weeks. Results suggest a complex balance between positive and negative effects of organic matter enrichment. Whilst leaf molar concentrations of N and P of H. ovalis increased (by 15 and 30% respectively), plant growth declined (up to 50% relative to control) for both DOM and POM enrichments. Phosphate was removed from sediment porewater following POM addition and most likely translocated to the leaves. Stressors other than nutrient limitation (e.g. biogeochemical constraints) reduce growth and affect the nutrient dynamics of the seagrass and should be the focus of future work. 相似文献

The risk of bioaccumulation of persistent liposoluble pollutants in marine food chains was highlighted by work done on organochlorine residues in marine organisms in the early 1960s. In one study, concentrations of DDE and dieldrin were determined in species from different trophic levels of the Farne Island ecosystem.1 Concentrations of pollutants were related to trophic levels, with the highest levels occurring in predators such as the cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) and the shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis). This paper will consider model systems which may be used to predict bioaccumulation risks from simple in vitro data. Emphasis will be upon persistent liposoluble pollutants with relatively simple patterns of metabolism, and upon the problem of bioaccumulation by marine predators. 相似文献

Satellite and ground-based measurements of the hydrogen fluoride (HF) total content (TC) are analyzed and compared. The HF profiles measured with an FTS device on the ACE satellite are used to calculate the TC and compare it with the ground-based measurements near St. Petersburg in 2009–2011. A comparison indicated that the seasonal variations in HF TC based on two independent measurements are in good qualitative agreement. Rare (nine) cases of direct comparison between two measurement types coordinated with respect to time (during the day) and site (no farther than 500 km) gave the following characteristics: the average difference is 8% and satellite data predominate over ground data; the standard deviation of a difference is 7%. In two cases of close measurement pairs (closer than 200 km), a comparison gave differences of 1 and 7%. The statistical characteristics of differences between two measurement types are in good agreement with the independent comparison of the ACE-FTS HF TC measurements with the NDACC network data. 相似文献

The Australia Telescope 20-GHz (AT20G) Survey is a blind survey of the whole southern sky at 20 GHz (with follow-up observations at 4.8 and 8.6 GHz) carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array from 2004 to 2007.
The Bright Source Sample (BSS) is a complete flux-limited subsample of the AT20G Survey catalogue comprising 320 extragalactic ) radio sources south of δ=−15° with Jy. Of these, 218 have near simultaneous observations at 8 and 5 GHz.
In this paper we present an analysis of radio spectral properties in total intensity and polarization, size, optical identifications and redshift distribution of the BSS sources. The analysis of the spectral behaviour shows spectral curvature in most sources with spectral steepening that increases at higher frequencies (the median spectral index α, assuming S ∝να , decreases from α8.6 4.8 = 0.11 between 4.8 and 8.6 GHz to α20 8.6 =−0.16 between 8.6 and 20 GHz), even if the sample is dominated by flat spectra sources (85 per cent of the sample has α20 8.6 > −0.5) . The almost simultaneous spectra in total intensity and polarization allowed us a comparison of the polarized and total intensity spectra: polarized fraction slightly increases with frequency, but the shapes of the spectra have little correlation. Optical identifications provided an estimation of redshift for 186 sources with a median value of 1.20 and 0.13, respectively, for QSO and galaxies. 相似文献

The Mersey estuary is the most contaminated estuary in British waters. Detailed studies are underway on the pathology of flounder (Platichthys flesus) from the Mersey and on flounder from the nearby, but less contaminated, Dee estuary. Flounder breed offshore but spend a lot of time in the estuaries, penetrating into freshwater. These flatfish are in close contact with sediments and will be exposed to exenobiotic stored in the sediments. Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) are flatfish which enter the Mersey with the tidal flow but spend less time in the estuary than flounder and are less likely to show evidence of pollutant exposure. Over 20 plaice were collected from the Mersey. Samples of the liver, kidney and gonad were fixed in 10% formal saline, processed into paraffin wax and 5 microm sections cut and stained with haematoxylin and eosin. Liver changes consisted of variable amounts of glycogen/lipid storage product, minor perivenular and perivascular fibrosis, and helminth parasitisation. No tumours or foci of cellular alteration, necrosis and inflammation were seen. In the gonad only changes consistent with normal gonadal cycling was seen. These studies provide evidence that plaice show little or no evidence of toxic pathological damage resulting from their stay in the estuary. 相似文献

Cell proliferation is an important component of toxic and carcinogenic mechanisms. A recently developed immunohistochemical assay for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) identifies an endogenous marker for cell proliferation in routinely-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens. This assay was adapted to identify proliferating cells in tissues of several fish species used in toxicity bioassays: medaka (Oryzias latipes), guppy (Poeata), and western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). The present studies show that this PCNA technique can identify proliferating cells in aquatic animals if attention is given to primary fixative, primary antibody, protein blocking reagent and antigen retrieval processing. PCNA immunoreactivity was demonstrated in tissues with normally high cell turnover such as gill, gastrointestinal tract and testis. Proliferation was also demonstrated in carcinogen-induced hepatic neoplasms. 相似文献

Circular shaped density plumes of low turbidity, low fecal indicator (Escherichia coli and enterococci) concentrations, and high salinity have been observed near the Industrial Canal in Lake Pontchartrain, north of the City of New Orleans. A conceptual model in polar coordinates and a numerical model are developed, together with data analysis, to illustrate the dense plume. It is demonstrated that the northward expansion of the plume occurs under northerly winds. The northward expansion of the plume occurs under northerly winds that drive downwind flow at the surface and upwind radial flow at the bottom. Northerly wind-induced straining, similar to tidal straining, promotes vertical stratification. As a result, the water becomes stratified near a thin bottom layer (<1 m), within which density currents are facilitated. The stability of the stratified plume suppresses wind-induced turbulent mixing inside the plume. The bottom water outside of the plume is more effectively stirred by the wind, the result being that the suspended sediment concentration outside of the plume area is much higher than inside. This contrast in mixing makes the plume visible from the surface by satellites even though the stratification is at the bottom. Laterally, wind stress produces a torque (vorticity) in areas of non-uniform depth such that upwind flow is developed in deep water and downwind flow in shallow water. The continuity requirement produces an upwind flow along the axis of the Industrial Canal (IC). The upwind flow is balanced by the downwind flow over the shallower peripheral areas along the coast. 相似文献
