Respiration and calcification rates of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas were measured in a laboratory experiment in the air and underwater, accounting for seasonal variations and individual size,
to estimate the effects of this exotic species on annual carbon budgets in the Bay of Brest, France. Respiration and calcification
rates changed significantly with season and size. Mean underwater respiration rates, deducted from changes in dissolved inorganic
carbon (DIC), were 11.4 μmol DIC g−1 ash-free dry weight (AFDW) h−1 (standard deviation (SD), 4.6) and 32.3 μmol DIC g−1 AFDW h−1 (SD 4.1) for adults (80–110 mm shell length) and juveniles (30–60 mm), respectively. The mean daily contribution of C. gigas underwater respiration (with 14 h per day of immersion on average) to DIC averaged over the Bay of Brest population was 7.0 mmol DIC m−2 day−1 (SD 8.1). Mean aerial CO2 respiration rate, estimated using an infrared gas analyzer, was 0.7 μmol CO2 g−1 AFDW h−1 (SD 0.1) for adults and 1.1 μmol CO2 g−1 AFDW h−1 (SD 0.2) for juveniles, corresponding to a mean daily contribution of 0.4 mmol CO2 m−2 day−1 (SD 0.50) averaged over the Bay of Brest population (with 10 h per day of emersion on average). Mean CaCO3 uptake rates for adults and juveniles were 4.5 μmol CaCO3 g−1 AFDW h−1 (SD 1.7) and 46.9 μmol CaCO3 g−1 AFDW h−1 (SD 29.2), respectively. The mean daily contribution of net calcification in the Bay of Brest C. gigas population to CO2 fluxes during immersion was estimated to be 2.5 mmol CO2 m−2 day−1 (SD 2.9). Total carbon release by this C. gigas population was 39 g C m−2 year−1 and reached 334 g C m−2 year−1 for densely colonized areas with relative contributions by underwater respiration, net calcification, and aerial respiration
of 71%, 25%, and 4%, respectively. These observations emphasize the substantial influence of this invasive species on the

Sedimentary diatom frustules and chironomid remains, in addition to the chemical stratigraphy of 32 elements and organic pollutants such as resin acids, PCB, DDT and its metabolites, were studied from core samples taken from Lake Jyväsjärvi in Central Finland (64° 14 N, 25° 47 E). The sediment profile covered over 200 years, with the oldest samples representing a period of very low human interference. The town of Jyväskylä was established on the lake shore in 1837, and the lake received untreated municipal wastewater from the town up until, 1977. A paper mill started operations in 1872 and began discharging effluent into Lake Jyväsjärvi. In recent years this effluent loading has been reduced. Based on the biological and chemical properties of the sediment strata, five developmental phases were distinguished and named as follows: (1) a pre-industrial phase (approximately up until the 1860s); (2) a phase of early changes in the lake ecosystem (from the 1870s to ca. 1940s); (3) a phase of increasing eutrophication (from ca. 1950 to ca. 1965); (4) a phase of severe pollution (from ca. 1966 to the early-1990s); and (5) a phase of recovery, which proceeded more quickly during the late-1990s following long-term hypolimnetic aeration. It was estimated that the ecological status of the lake changed from good to moderate during the second phase. Due to the poor chemical status of the lake (including increased concentrations of harmful substances) and the pronounced changes in diatom and chironomid communities, the ecological status from 1950 to the early-1990s was classified as bad. The present ecological status, after a slow recovery of about 20 years, can be classified as moderate/poor. Chemical analysis of the sediment revealed that some elements (C, N, P, S, Ba, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, Ni and Zn) followed the known history of municipal waste water discharge into the lake, but Hg, Cr and persistent organic pollutants had different stratigraphies, and therefore mainly originated from other sources. Pronounced changes in profundal benthic communities (chironomids) started about 80 years later than those in diatoms, but later changes in chironomid assemblages were greater than those in diatoms. 相似文献

Although the circulation of intermediate water masses in the eastern North Atlantic remains poorly defined, the presence of
fresher intermediate waters, the Sub-Artic (SAIW) and the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW), as well the saline intermediate
Mediterranean Water (MW), has been tracked using biogeochemical properties. Here we assess the hydrographic and chemical structures
of intermediate waters along the western Portuguese margin by examining the vertical distributions and property-property plots
of chemical tracers (oxygen and nutrients). AAIW was traced by low oxygen and high nutrients, while SAIW was recognized by
low nutrients. The Mediterranean Water (MW) undercurrent is shown to spread towards the eastern flank of Gorringe bank. Concurrently,
the fresher waters gained salt by direct incorporation of MW, while this water was enriched in nutrients on its way northward
and westward owing, to a great extent, to the entrainment of an AAIW branch. The distributions of nutrients and apparent oxygen
utilization are discussed in terms of regional ocean circulation. Our analysis suggests a circulation pattern of the various
intermediate waters along the western Portuguese margin: MW extends all over the area, but its presence is more pronounced
around cape St. Vincent; SAIW apparently moves southward, reaching the Gorringe bank region, and AAIW flows northward along

Subsidence of organic soils in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta threatens sustainability of the California (USA) water supply system and agriculture. Land-surface elevation data were collected to assess present-day subsidence rates and evaluate rice as a land use for subsidence mitigation. To depict Delta-wide present-day rates of subsidence, the previously developed SUBCALC model was refined and calibrated using recent data for CO2 emissions and land-surface elevation changes measured at extensometers. Land-surface elevation change data were evaluated relative to indirect estimates of subsidence and accretion using carbon and nitrogen flux data for rice cultivation. Extensometer and leveling data demonstrate seasonal variations in land-surface elevations associated with groundwater-level fluctuations and inelastic subsidence rates of 0.5–0.8 cm yr–1. Calibration of the SUBCALC model indicated accuracy of ±0.10 cm yr–1 where depth to groundwater, soil organic matter content and temperature are known. Regional estimates of subsidence range from <0.3 to >1.8 cm yr–1. The primary uncertainty is the distribution of soil organic matter content which results in spatial averaging in the mapping of subsidence rates. Analysis of leveling and extensometer data in rice fields resulted in an estimated accretion rate of 0.02–0.8 cm yr–1. These values generally agreed with indirect estimates based on carbon fluxes and nitrogen mineralization, thus preliminarily demonstrating that rice will stop or greatly reduce subsidence. Areas below elevations of –2 m are candidate areas for implementation of mitigation measures such as rice because there is active subsidence occurring at rates greater than 0.4 cm yr–1. 相似文献

We present spatially resolved intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of a sample of 12 E+A galaxies in the z = 0.32 rich galaxy cluster AC 114, obtained with the FLAMES multi-integral field unit system on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory. Previous integrated spectroscopy of all these galaxies by Couch & Sharples had shown them to have strong Balmer line absorption and an absence of [O ii ]λ3727 emission – the defining characteristics of the 'E+A' spectral signature, indicative of an abrupt halt to a recent episode of quite vigorous star formation. We have used our spectral data to determine the radial variation in the strength of Hδ absorption in these galaxies and hence map out the distribution of this recently formed stellar population. Such information provides important clues as to what physical event might have been responsible for this quite dramatic change in star formation activity in the recent past of these galaxies. We find a diversity of behaviour amongst these galaxies in terms of the radial variation in Hδ absorption: four galaxies show little Hδ absorption across their entire extent; it would appear they were misidentified as E+A galaxies in the earlier integrated spectroscopic studies. The remainder show strong Hδ absorption, with a gradient that is either negative (Hδ equivalent width decreasing with radius), flat or positive . By comparison with numerical simulations we suggest that the first of these different types of radial behaviour provides evidence for a merger/interaction origin, whereas the latter two types of behaviour are more consistent with the truncation of star formation in normal disc galaxies with the Hδ gradient becoming increasingly positive with time after truncation. It would seem therefore that more than one physical mechanism is responsible for E+A formation in the same environment. 相似文献

The quantity of phytoplankton in Newark Bay, New Jersey as indicated by chlorophyll-a content of the water, is low in the winter and early spring, and fluctuates greatly during the spring and summer. Chlorophyll-a concentrations are generally less than 20 μg/l until April. Between April and August, three phytoplankton blooms were indicated by chlorophyll-a concentrations as high as 81.4 μg/l. Net phytoplankton diversity values indicated generally eutrophic conditions; however, there was no significant correlation between diversity and chlorophyll-a concentrations. In the literatures of regional science, urban economics, and urban development planning, a working assumption is that individuals
respond to incentives and regulations, given their preferences. Models for planning and policy analyses are used to consider
what might occur if the incentives or regulations were different. In these models, however, preferences are usually assumed
to be given and stable, and agents are usually assumed to be homogeneous. This paper focuses on the implications of making
preferences in models of policy implementation endogenously determined and time varying heterogeneous agents. We consider
first the recent literature on intertemporal choice and preference change, which cuts across many disciplines, and more briefly
the literature on norm-regarding behavior. We then elaborate a simple model of transportation demand—from a static to a dynamic
orientation, from fixed and exogenously given preferences of strictly self-regarding agents to endogenously determined and

Sensitive spectral observations made in two frequency bands near 6.0 and 17.6 GHz are described for Orion and W51. Using frequency
switching we were able to achieve a dynamic range in excess of 10,000 without fitting sinusoidal or polynomial baselines.

∼1 mK in these strong continuum sources. Hydrogen recombination lines with Δn as high as 25 have been detected in Orion. In the Orion data, where the lines are stronger, we have also detected a systematic

GPS satellite orbits available from the International GNSS Service (IGS) show a consistent radial bias of up to several cm
and a particular pattern in the Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) residuals, which are suggested to be related to radiation pressure
mismodeling. In addition, orbit-related frequencies were identified in geodetic time series such as apparent geocenter motion
and station displacements derived from GPS tracking data. A potential solution to these discrepancies is the inclusion of
Earth radiation pressure (visible and infrared) modeling in the orbit determination process. This is currently not yet considered
by all analysis centers contributing to the IGS final orbits. The acceleration, accounting for Earth radiation and satellite
models, is introduced in this paper in the computation of a global GPS network (around 200 IGS sites) adopting the analysis
strategies from the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE). Two solutions covering 9 years (2000–2008) with and without
Earth radiation pressure were computed and form the basis for this study. In previous studies, it has been shown that Earth
radiation pressure has a non-negligible effect on the GPS orbits, mainly in the radial component. In this paper, the effect
on the along-track and cross-track components is studied in more detail. Also in this paper, it is shown that Earth radiation
pressure leads to a change in the estimates of GPS ground station positions, which is systematic over large regions of the
Earth. This observed “deformation” of the Earth is towards North–South and with large scale patterns that repeat six times
per GPS draconitic year (350 days), reaching a magnitude of up to 1 mm. The impact of Earth radiation pressure on the geocenter
and length of day estimates was also investigated, but the effect is found to be less significant as compared to the orbits
