At the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR)(Planet. Space Sci. (2004) these proceedings) frequencies (HF/VHF), extraterrestrial radiation experiences substantial propagation delay as it passes through the ionosphere. The adaptive calibration technique to be employed by LOFAR will use signals from many known bright radio sources in the sky to estimate and remove the effects of this delay. This technique will operate along many simultaneous lines of sight for each of the stations. Measurements will be made on time scales of seconds or shorter, and with accuracies corresponding to path length variations of 1 cm or less. Tomographic techniques can be used to invert the thousands of changing and independent total electron content (TEC) measurements produced by LOFAR into three-dimensional electron density specifications above the array. These specifications will measure spatial and time scales significantly smaller and faster than anything currently available. These specifications will be used to investigate small-scale ionospheric irregularities, equatorial plasma structures, and ionospheric waves. In addition, LOFAR will improve the understanding of the solar drivers of the ionosphere by simultaneously measuring the solar radio bursts and the TEC. Finally, LOFAR, which will be situated to observed the galactic plane, will make continuous, high-resolution observations of the low-latitude ionosphere, an important but under-observed region. This paper will look at LOFAR as an ionospheric probe including comparisons to other ionospheric probes as well as possible methods of operation to optimize ionospheric measurements.  相似文献

An estimate of the computation accuracy of wind waves is obtained on the basis of three mathematical models used for the diagnosis and forecast of wind waves at the Hydrometcenter of Russia, US National Weather Service, and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The accuracy estimation was carried out for the whole year 2006 by means of the comparison of model computations based on different wind fields with hourly instrumental observations of waves at 16 buoys in the North Atlantic. The computation accuracy was estimated on the basis of six statistical characteristics. Besides, the estimates for various wave height ranges for months and seasons of the year are made for all buoys and grouped into three geographical areas: the coasts of the United States, Canada, and Great Britain. The essential differences are revealed in the accuracy of model-based computation of waves in the areas of the ocean with different wind wave regimes, in different seasons of the year, and within various wave height ranges. The obtained results indicate the necessity to improve the present-day methods of diagnosis and forecast of wind waves.  相似文献

Studied are the formation processes of dangerous wind waves in the water area of the North Atlantic during three cold periods (October–March) from 2007 to 2010. Obtained are the estimates of variability of cyclone trajectories, wind fields, and wave height in the North Atlantic at the intensification of zonal or meridional atmospheric circulation.  相似文献

It is shown that leading and following magnetic field lines are inclined toward each other by a few degrees at nearly all latitudes in both the north and south hemispheres. The amplitudes of these inclinations are lower by about a factor 3 for weak fields than for strong fields. There are significant differences between the hemispheres and from one activity cycle to the next in the leading and following polarity field-line inclinations at latitudes poleward of the activity latitudes. In a narrow latitude zone just south of the solar equator the inclinations of both the leading and following fields reduce to zero (or perhaps slightly negative values). Although one would expect such a zone at the equator, where diffusion will mix field lines with opposite inclinations from the two hemispheres, it is not clear why this zone should be on one side of the equator only. The results discussed here were obtained with Mount Wilson magnetograph data (1967–1992), and are confirmed in many respects with National Solar Observatory/Kitt Peak (NSO/KP) data (1976–1986).Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under Cooperative Agreement with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Pitch-angle diffusion coefficients of electrons have been calculated for resonant interaction with electrostatic electron-cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves using quasi linear diffusion theory. Calculations have been performed for the planets Earth and Jupiter at three radial distances for each planet. Electron precipitation fluxes have also been calculated and compared with observed fluxes. At Earth, electrons of energy ≤200 eV may be put on strong diffusion at L = 10. At lower L values, observed ECH wave amplitudes are insufficient to put electrons on strong diffusion. At Jupiter, electrons can be put on strong diffusion at all L values. However, the energy of electrons which may be put on strong diffusion decreases from about 1 keV at L = 7 to ~100 eV at L = 17. It is concluded that ECH waves may be partly responsible for diffuse auroral precipitation of low energy electrons at Jupiter for lower L values. At Earth contribution of ECH waves to diffuse aurora is quite small.  相似文献

Chromato-mass-spectrometric studies made it possible to identify a wide spectrum of hydrocarbon biomarkers in crude oils from Cenomanian pools of northern West Siberia (Russkoe, Pangodinskoe, Van-Eganskoe, Severo-Komsomol’skoe). The distribution pattern of the main hydrocarbon components (n-alkanes, acyclic isoprenanes, steranes, terpanes) shows that most of the oils underwent intense microbial oxidation. We have established high concentrations of 25-norhopanes typical of high-degree degradation; demethylated hopanes are also revealed in “alkane” crude oils. Among low-molecular chemofossils, bi- and tricyclic mono and sesquiterpanes have been recognized, whose precursors are usually biomolecules synthesized by plants. Unsaturated precursors of mono and sesquiterpanes might have been the starting material for thermocatalytical synthesis of framework adamantanoid structures, whose high concentrations have been found in alkane-free crude oils.  相似文献

Abstract

This technical note presents an instrumental method for the precise and timely installation of mechanical displacement sensors to investigate stem compression and relaxation associated with whole-tree rainwater loading and evaporation, respectively. We developed this procedure in response to the conclusions of Friesen et al. (2008 Friesen, J. 2008. Tree rainfall interception measured by stem compression. Water Resources Research, 44 doi:doi:10.1029/2008 WR007074. [Google Scholar]), which called for the development of a precision mounting method for strain sensors on inherently-irregular trunk cross-sections so that rainfall interception, storage and evaporation may be distinguished from other strain-related phenomena. To supply precise sensor installation locations, high-resolution trunk profiles are generated using the LaserBarkTM automated tree measurement system. These scans are utilized to approximate the location of neutral bending axes. A routine then instructs a mobile rangefinder along the cross-section to optically indicate exact positioning for strain sensors over the bending axes. As imprecise sensor placement linearly increases error and diminishes signal-to-noise ratio, this automated installation routine is designed to remove significant distortions created by wind throw, off-centre loading within unevenly-distributed canopies, and human error that can lead to erroneous measurements of rainfall interception.
