Catchment evaporation and potential evaporation further development of a climatologic relationship

When evaporation from the surfaces of a region is limited by the availability of moisture the resultant changes in the temperature and humidity of the overpassing air are reflected in the potential evaporation. Such interactions have provided the basis for the progressive development of a model in which the regional evaporation, a product of climatic, soil moisture and vegetative processes, is estimated from its effects on potential evaporation or on representative climatological observations. Further improvements are presented and the results are tested with previously published hydrologic and climatologic data from twenty river catchments in Canada and Ireland. These catchments have a range in annual runoff of approximately zero to one meter and a range of snow cover duration from almost zero to six months. Comparison of model predictions with precipitation less runoff estimates for five year periods provides reasonable evidence for the validity of the model with a maximum deviation of 44 mm yr⁻¹, or 9%, and a standard error of estimate of 26 mm yr⁻¹. Seasonal comparisons permit insights into the variability of catchment storage and the effects of climate and topograpy on regional evaporation.     

Electromagnetic studies in the central Arctic water basin

The results of the electromagnetic studies, obtained on the North Pole drifting stations, are reviewed. These results are still of current interest. The aspects of similar future works are discussed.     

High-resolution ion-microprobe measurement of lead isotopes: Variations within single zircons from Lac Seul,northwestern Ontario

Selected-area measurements of lead-isotope ratios in zircons have been made at high mass resolution using a modified A.E.I. IM20 ion-microprobe. At a working resolution of 3200 it is shown that the important interfering molecular peaks generated from the zircon matrix may be separated from atomic lead peaks. Corrections for overlapping peaks, which are necessary in measurements of lead isotopes at low mass resolution, are then only required for ²⁰⁸Pb.Measurements on N.B.S. standards show no isotope discrimination within counting statistics. Determination of ²⁰⁷Pb/²⁰⁶Pb on 29 single zircon grains from a tonalite gneiss and a granite from Lac Seul, northwestern Ontario, give very variable ratios with mean values close to those of bulk separates. Peaks in the distribution of 207/206 ratios obtained from the tonalite gneiss may be interpreted as evidence for two stages of lead loss. High 207/206 ratios are shown to be significant for at least two zircons and probably record a minimum age of formation of 3.3 ± 0.1 b.y. for the gneiss.

The effect of highly saline oil-field water on soils and potable groundwater is considered. Three phases of the hydrochemical evolution of groundwater quality affected by transborder pollution and field development that has deteriorated potable groundwater in the two topmost aquifers are identified.     

On the temperature distribution in the solar corona

An improved value of coronal temperature is obtained by the degree of ionization method taking various processes into consideration. Comparison with some of the existing results has also been made.
